Hello there,

I was wondering if any of you MR2 experienced lot can help me with a little problem.....

I have an MR-S (2000) coming in a few weeks which has had a tiny front end bump.  There is very little damage, and only paint is needed really.  The snag is that the Driver's Airbag looks as if its had a go at deploying.

My question is as follows: Do I need to change the whole Steering Wheel, or do I just need a replacement airbag module, and moreover, where can I get the relevant parts without costing the earth ?  Plus, is there any easy way of resetting the airbag light if it is lit ?

Your help would be most appreciated....

Cheers

Ben

PS.  Its for the wife, so I'm tempted not to bother with an airbag !!!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:

Contact Adam (Jap GT300) via PM, he is our Jap import expert, and has pretty much rebuilt a couple himself, he is sure to know.

There are two ways to go about this.

The first one (also being the one I would choose) By an aftermarket steering wheel.  All Import cars come with modifications (performance and appearance)  This will cost in the region of £100 for a momo which is the popular choice out in Japan.  Next you will need to disable the light.  The easiest way to do this would is simply to remove the bulb.  It is easy to get to.  The gauge surrond above the steering wheel simply pulls off and the dials are held down with three screws.  The bulb simply pulls out from the back of the cluster.

The second option (more expensive) Find a used wheel.  There are several japanese salvage specialists in the Yellow pages or I notice there is currently one on Ebay.  The prices for a second hand one are between £50-£100 without the airbag.  Then you will have to go to a dealership to get the airbag and code reset, i'm not sure of the cost of this.

I personally would go for the first option.  There is nothing wrong with having an aftermarket steering wheel and without the airbag there is no need for the airbag light.

Hope this helps

Cheers, thats great Adam.

But.....I will need to SVA this car, so would it pass with an aftermarket steering wheel ?????  I'm not sure it would......what do you think

I don't believe that SVA will be a problem, in so far as no air bag is concerned.

TVRs do not have air bags and neither do Caterhams and the like.

SVA will be fine!  These cars are one of the easier ones to pass

Check tyres have euro symbol on them (e with a circle around it)
Rear fog light (you can buy the uk loom instead of one of those drop down boxes)
MPH converter (remember to change the kmh ->mph on the odometer) (cheap way for this is to cover the k with a bit of tape as mh is also recognised for mph)
Fuel neck converter

and that is it
Adam

ps if you car has no stereo you have to put a bit of card over the hole!  this is to hide the sharpe edges.

Adam,

1. The UK loom for the foglight....how does that work then, and how much ?!  Does it provide for a fog light ?

2. MPH converter, usually around £60 aren't they.  I take it the MR-S/2 has a digital odometer then ?

So you think that if i ripped of the steering wheel and replaced with an aftermarket one (e.g. Momo), it will still get through its SVA ?  That'll save me a few bob then.

1, attached behind the drivers side rear light cluster you will see the 4 bulb holders and attached to these a spider type wiring loom that goes to a plug that attaches to the main loom.  The spider type wiring loom can be replaced for the UK spec this will then allow for one of the rear brake lights to become a fog light. (you may need to buy the bulb).

Remember as the MR-S has 4 rear brake lights (UK only has 2) to remove one in the other light cluster to make it look symetrical.

2, The MR-S/MR2 are both digital converters.  I usually pay £40 for them.  I have do have some for that price if you would like it (inc. intructions).

3, All the SVA will check is if the steering lock works!  This is the only form of anti theft device which is a legal requirement.

Adam,

Your help has been invaluable...thanks very much

Once the car is confirmed as mine...i.e. turns up in England, then I will get back to you, and hopefully if you still have one, purchase a converter from you.

I'll purchase that ther loom from the local Toyota dealer (unless you have any other suggestions).  What about switch gear.  I take it there will be a blanked switch already wired up, so that I can just pop in a switch bought from Mr T again.......?!

Thanks again fella

Any universal switch will do the job.  I'm using a 99p one from maplin, but the UK switch will go straight in.  There is not a blank plate for this but you can remove the little coin holder instead.

Here are some part numbers that might help.
Air Bag module - 45130-02130-C0
Steering Wheel - 45100-2B690-C0
Fog Switch - 84119-17050
Wiring Harness - 81555-17150

Thanks Adam
