MR2 roadster price guideline?

Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a MR2 with a budget of around £3,500 - £4,000. I will be buying private as opposed to from a dealer.

I'd very much like to get a 2003 model for the obvious benefits such as updated suspension and gear box etc. With my budget am I being realistic in hoping to find a nice example of a 2003 or am I better of looking for a slightly older one but sacrificing these benefits for lower mileage?

Also does anybody have any idea of the sort of mileage I should be looking at if I find a 2003 for under £4,000?

Cheers,

Mike

I can't see you getting a post-facelift car for that sort of money unless it's a complete dog of a car. Mileage (if you did find one) I would expect to be around 70K+ at least. Have a look through the vehicles for sale on here (PH as well), it'll give you an idea as to what to expect to pay.

£5.5K upwards should net you a post-03 car, but even that's at the bottom end of the range.

I agree with everything that Dan M just said.

When I was scouting for cars at the beginning of summer I didn't come across any 2003 onwards in your price range. I paid £5,400 (advertised at £5,700) for my 2003 with 34k miles on the clock, and that was a lucky find where the seller was just trying to match the part exchange value that a Merc garage gave her.

I reckon for your budget you'd be best going for a slightly older MR2, as most 2003 reg cars with half-decent mileage will be in the region of £5.k -£6k +. A good example will set you back quite a bit more.

i'm quite surprised at how high dealer prices are at the minute
just been looking on toyota's site and the cheapest 04 is £7500
only £1500 less than i paid for mine 2 yr ago this month
some with similar mileages to mine are actually more than i paid

webuyanycar offered £5800 for mine, with 54k, last month (not selling, just curious)
so can't see them offering £2k less for any facelift cars
and i'd imagine most people trying to sell would at least give them a try
so should be a good guide to the least you'd have to pay
although i've no idea how they value modified cars

So the advice given would point towards this car likely being a poor example or having something drastically wrong with it?

Dealers always cost more though....it still doesnt mean it's a good deal!

Anyways, 3500? That's basically the absolute lowest amount of money you will find a roadster, so in truth, she'll likely be a dog.

You'll be looking for 70k+ on an X plate I'd guess.

Save more and get one with less miles!  s:D :D s:D

That's usually the case, but when I was looking I found a blue Y reg, 60k and what seemed to be good condition. So there are always exceptions, just gotta find them. Like I said, I found my 03 w/ leather, FSH, 34k, perfect condition for only £5,400.

Another idea of the price of an '03 for you, I paid £6600 back in March - 15k miles and an absolute minter though.

I'm not intent on buying a dog of a car. If I can't find a bargain then I'll hang on until I do.

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and i are looking at getting an MR-2 as we fancy a fun, sporty, good value 2nd car.

We have a budget of between 4-5k
We have found the following 2 miles up the road:

2000 X Reg TOYOTA MR2 1.8 VVTi
2 Doors, Manual, Roadster, Petrol, 75,000 miles, Chilli Red. 2 owners, Black Leather upholstery, Air-Conditioning, ABS, Alloy wheels, Remote locking, Electric windows, CD and Radio Cassette, Immobiliser, Driver airbag, Passenger airbag, full service History, £4,490

 m http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/msn/CA ... 1343125382 m

This seems reasonable, especially given that there is a '51' plate one in black down the road (albeit with 63k on the clock) for £5.5k.

However i have found Private sale 2003 plate with the following description:

67,600 miles, FSH, two owners from new. I bought the car from the local Toyota dealer in July 2007 after it had received a major service from them and have only added 8000 miles since. Tyres all have many miles left in them (fronts changed 4,000 miles ago). MOT and Tax until May 2010. The car is standard - no add-ons apart from a replacement CD/radio with Ipod connection - 2 Door Convertible, Green, Petrol, Manual, ABS, Air conditioning, Alarm, Alloy wheels, Body coloured bumpers, Drivers airbag. £4,995

 m http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/msn/CA ... 6341064570 m

Now this is at the top of our price range, but given that it is a facelift model i would be happy to have a serious look at it. I guess the main reason that this could be considered 'cheap' is that the seller has not had the car serviced for 2 years - although as they state thay have only done 8000 miles in that time. Drawing upon your considerable knowledge and experience, do you think that the newer car is likely to be ok at the price? Or, do you think that we should go for the cheaper and older option (with a warranty from a garage)? My feeling is that the 2003 model would be ideal and that the servicing is not a major issue, i would perhaps get a vehicle inspection done by the RAC or the AA for peace of mind and if we deceiced to go for it get it serviced immediately.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Buy the newer car and service it straight away.
Lovely colour, good price imho, and the facelift has many little additional features that make it a better standard car than the earlier one.

Get it, drive it, enjoy it ... just be careful as the weather makes the road slipier  s:wink:  s:wink:

thanks for that. I've read about the chassis update from 03 onwards, are the older ones much more twitchy on the limit? We are hopefully going to test drive the one down the road tomorrow as it is so close, but i think i'd feel happier with a little stability - especially when 'pressing on'.   s:) :) s:)

Could anyone who's eyes are sharp enough to tell let me know if the newer one is a facelift model and not just a late reg older model.

Thanks again.

Definitely facelift.

1. They only did that colour in face lift
2. Rear bumper inserts are right
3. Rear lights are right
4. Front bumper has the foglamps
5. The chrome rings on the heater are right

Looks like a nice example.
To add, i bout a 2003 facelift when it was 3 years old but only had 3990 miles on the clock and had only had it's first service ever.
Changed oil & filter and it's been great ever since.

The facelift car also got new design pistons in the engine which prevents "oval bore syndrome" that can happen in the earlier cars too. So as long as you like it i think you'll suffer less problems with the later car. Not saying the older car will be rubbish, but it's likely to experience more problems as time goes by.
