I believe this is all about the big motor corporations 'back handing' the EU officials to introduce this legislation. These corporations (BMW, Audi etc etc) want people to only be able to service their cars and get parts from themselves. That's where they make all their money and they want MORE!

Would you all be happy with me contacting ACE on behalf of the club?
I'm wondering if we could get interest from all the car owners clubs in Britain and see if pressure can be brought to bear upon these EU people who are supposed to represent us ... we do after all pay our taxes to support their plush lifestyles.
well you get my support .....

Ectually OZ wheels are TUV approved, remember their home market falls within the regime area who rigidly apply these rules already.
The hilarious (read stupid) problem with this is that OZ wheels for the roadster are only allowed unter TUV rules to use the same size wheels and tyres all-round. This actually contradicts the Type Approval and Homologation of the vehicle as it was originally sold.

I couldn't buy staggered wheels direct from OZ, I had to go via a UK company to order two pairs of wheels in.   s:roll:  s:roll:

I'm guessing being the big car producers it's France and Germany behind this? For years the French have been trying to get a europe wide 100hp restriction on motorcycles to no avail so hopefully this will go the same way?

I think we should push to impose our own additional legislation, how about Europe test their cars every year instead of every two years. Also stick 30€ a ltr on their diesel to bring it in line with what we have to pay (the only country in europe where diesel is more expensive than petrol?) and the French can start paying road tax again, lets see how they like that!?

I wonder if this has any connection with the plans earlier this year to change the frequency of our MOT to every 2 years like they have in Europe? A plan which, by the way, was scrapped?

It may well be that much of these proposals will get watered down but it is an insidious process that could have a broad impact unless addressed promptly.

The classic car world are up in arms, one proposal is to limit the range they can travel, perhaps requiring written permission.
Fine for the Vintage cars who generally do London-Brighton with a tow vehicle in escort, but for the guy with his MK1 Escort, weekend driver, quite restrictive.

My feel is that unless questions are asked in UK Parliament formally, much of this will go through without proper consultation with the various clubs and organisations who will be effected by the proposed changes.

The core of the proposals is to level the playingfield Europe wide. To impose MOT type testings equally and fairly so that a badly maintained Eastern European vehicle cannot be driven on UK roads.

The average Eurobox driver will see this as a way of keeping 'dangerous' cars off the road. The enthusiast will see this as a restriction on their freedom. Somewhere between the two is a balance.

Hmmm...

Having owned several modified cars over the years (in fact I've modded EVERY car I've ever owned  s:twisted:  s:twisted:  ), I think this is spun a little on the scaremongering side...?  s:? :? s:?

It could be said that this is SAFETY related..? Therefore as long as the 3rd party items fitted EXCEED the original spec, then its ok..? Just an extension of the basic MOT...?
It will be down to the manufacturers of the said items getting them tested to be certified. This basically shuts down the current Chinese-made fake parts industry!

Sure...the cost to us modders will rocket and many pattern part manufacturers / sellers will be out of business....

...but its not going to stop people modding cars, is it!?

I reckon it'll kill the VW stretched-tyre craze dead in its tracks, on safety grounds...but fitting TRD Sportivo suspension kit to a MK3, for instance?  Surely there's not going to be a problem with that..!?   s:shock:  s:shock:

Does this ridiculous legislation also apply to tyres, then?   s:wink:  s:wink:   Oh...wait a minute: ALL current tyres by the various manufacturers surely EXCEED the spec of tyres ORIGINALLY FITTED to various cars 10+ years ago!?!  s:D :D s:D
SO...it'll be ok to have tyres that offer an improvement over OEM, then......?
Same with lighting, suspension, brake pads /discs, etc, etc, then.......?   s:wink:  s:wink:

HTF are they actually going to legislate for all the millions of permutations..?

Personally, I reckon they'll introduce a vastly watered-down version, after they actually sit down and think it through..?   s:roll:  s:roll:

Oh..Steve beat me to it by a couple of minutes...!   s:D :D s:D    s:oops:  s:oops:

Re: 2 year MOT....

..a bad idea! Both from a safety point of view, and from the enforcing their legislation p.o.v, too......

How are they going to enforce the modding laws if they check the cars less frequently...?  If you only have an MOT once every 2 years, then its more worthwhile to swap the offending bits back to stock for the MOT, just like peeps do now for CAT converters, etc.....?   s:D :D s:D

....and "Eastern European" (in fact ANY foreign vehicles  s:evil:  s:evil:  ) shouldn't be allowed to drive on our roads until the idiot government incorporate road tax into fuel.......!? Make the  sbastard bastard sbastard s PAY for wear and tear of OUR roads...!   s:D :D s:D

Worrying times indeed, these pr*cks making up the rules have nt the first clue, what about all the businesses that sell and manufacture after market parts,
that would be another crippling blow to the economy. If its anything like my industry, then the proposal will be being backed up by the car manufacturers, imagine legislation stating that you can only use there original parts, license to print money sewing up the market for themselves. Surely this cant become law, what happens to monoply rules if you can only purchase original parts , wheres my right to shop around and freedom of choice. This would open up a can of worms that they may well wish they had nt opened imo.
Its quite ridiculous really, any car enthusiast that is willing to spend thousands modifying there car, is hardly going to run it into the ground and make it
unroadworthy, they should be thinking how they can get all the uninsured and non mot cars off the road.

Dont know exactly how it works but has anybody set up an e-petition on the government website, think ill have a mooch on there and see if it has/can be done.

i still presonnally say shout and blow this out of all context as we will then have more of a chance of being heard and something can be done about it. Im sick of the goverment walking all over us all my life all i have seen is them take take and take again.

If we dont shout and all of this does happen who you going to blame goverment, EU or yourself for not shouting when it was needed the most?

QuoteForgetting paying tax to the government. No one buying any mods, a lot of business gone for exhaust fabricators, brakes, kit spraying, etc. not to mention all the hosting locations of car shows/events losing £££. Way to boost the economy   ... that's ridiculous.

Thats the first thing that came to my mind... It will shut down a MULTI BILLION DOLLAR industry WORLDWIDE... And to be honest lets look forward to another great depression/recession... You thought the house and money lending issue was bad... I know people who would Modify their car before paying their rent or buying food lol!!!!!!

And in all honesty it will just mean more people drive around with illegal street cars... Hmmm thats never happened before...
