Yes but it won't work with the 1ZZ Ecu and clocks. 1ZZ tach picks up off the crank sensor and a 3SGTE doesn't have one.

yes the 1zz ecu knows the tach as it sees the crank and sends a signal out to the clock. The signal that it sends is a common one, so if your engine is running off the 3gste ecu then take its tach output and wire it to the clocks directly bypass the 1zz.

Bet your over the moon! Good work mate.

Bet you can't wait for the first test drive.

Paul at Woodsport has tried everything to get the tach working with no joy before. Can't wire straight to the clocks apparently as they don't do anything without passing thought the stock ecu first therefore bypassing it wouldn't help at all.

I have had to fit the old 1ZZ temp sensor and wiring to the old ecu to get the temp gauge to work.

My emerald ecu runs the clocks direct to the clocks so bypass possible. I guess the pwm signal is not the same.

Lee H

Interesting, although your Emerald ecu will probably read from the trigger wheel on the crank though and hence outputs something the dash understands. The 3SGTE seems to get its rev signal from the ignition amplifier.

That probably the case, however the tach is a certain amount of pulses per minute so regardless of what it is making the pulse the clocks should understand it. From memory its a white wire that feeds the clocks the tach, cant hurt in just trying a direct connection as a temp idea.

Just to update this, car is on the road now and passed MOT Saturday morning! Put the first 60 miles on since the engine swap and all seems ok. Not much boost as still working through the tank of regular unleaded.

Seriously cool, one of my fav roadsters  s:D :D s:D

How does it feel?

Lee H

#83
It definitely doesn't feel as agile as my 1ZZ Roadster on the same suspension but handling is still pretty good. The noise more than makes up for it though and 1.1 bar boost should be fun, only took it to 0.6 bar today.

Wow, great achievement.. Just read the topic and having had a mk2 turbo I'm now very jealous of your car!  Can't wait to hear what it handles like  s:) :) s:)

Update

Put about 700 miles on the car so far but found the exhaust is restricting the boost to 0.9 bar as it's too small diameter and too long. Had a few ridiculous quotes for a custom system and lost interest a little bit to be honest.

Bought this:

Put a 2ZZ in this (waste of time):

Now decided to revisit this car and make it a little more civilised and sell the 2ZZ one. Will then attempt to use this for next years Europe trip and also as a daily driver.

First task this weekend it to remove the paddle clutch and lightened flywheel and return to stock as that's my biggest hatred of this car in traffic. Also going to bite the bullet and get an exhaust made with the proceeds from the 2ZZ Roadster so I can run full boost.

Plan is to have exits either side of the number plate through the grills.

Sounds like a plan.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

It's a real shame you think the 2zz was a waste of time, when I'm gagging to throw one in the back of my car!

But with the turbo car I can understand why.

Nice Porsche, is it a c2, c4 or turbo?

Its a Carrera 2 3.6. Didn't want a 4 really for what the car is used for. A turbo would have been lovely but a bit out of reach at the moment. Would have to pay about £23k for a pretty rough one now so I figured it better to buy a really clean NA.

Enjoy it  s:) :) s:)

Looking at the change in weather doubt it will be out again this year. Already sorted all the little niggles I've found since buying it, surprisingly easy to work on.

Time to focus on MR2 starting with clutch change in the morning.

Clutch done but then I went down with severe man flu and only just recovering now. At least that another job I've found can be done without removing the engine, was surprisingly straight forward except the gear linkage brackets.

So much more pleasant to drive now with a standard LUK unit in, just hope it can take the abuse but can't see why it wouldn't at just over stock power.

Have also started the mods for the new exhaust.

Will be having the old cut out in the splitter smoothed as well. Hopefully be at York attempting the 1/4 mile then come April.

Could do with the 2ZZzzzz going to free up some drive space and car funds now.

Made it to York last weekend but disappointing day really. Not got new exhaust yet so not running full boost, also the car was holding back over 5k rpm and showing alarmingly lean on the wideband, not sure what is wrong there.

Managed three runs on the 1/4 before I decided not to risk melting it, best being a crappy 13.7 @ 102mph, still quick enough to match a mk2 Focus RS but ultimately disappointing after the mk1 MR2 ran 13.2.

Back to the drawing board   s:roll:  s:roll:

What's up with the fueling, I guess your running the same injectors etc from the mk1, what about fuel pump?

No idea, was reading 17:1 afr or lower at full boost over 5k rpm   s:shock:  s:shock:  when I left York and put my foot down was down in the 10's on afr so no idea what's going on there. Maybe wideband faulty!

Running standard 3SGTE injectors and a Walbro 255 pump same as in the mk1.

Interesting so the ecu pulled the fuel then. Is there a knock sensor maybe higher ait temps whilst waiting to do the run?

I doubt the ecu would pull fuel, think it pulls ignition. Does have an IAT sensor as stock which determines what ignition to allow as far as I know. Wasn't monitoring intake temps but could be related.

Just read your complete thread. I have to say, hats off to you for pulling off such a great build. I have no doubt that you'll improve on your times once you've got a new exhaust and fuelling niggles sorted.

Cheers. Might not get the niggles sorted as quickly as i hoped as I've just bought this and think I prefer it to the Roadster. Should have gone K20 like you    s:cry:  s:cry:
