Oh no, I thought your mate was rebuilding it?  s:( :( s:(

So your going to keep using the current gearbox on track while you get the next one built?

There is another posiblity, that it might not be the box.

I'm 99.9% certain it is.

Things like this make me laugh, so do you have some suggestions What else could it be?

No he doesn't do gearbox rebuilds, he dropped it off the car and took it to a gearbox specialist who opened it up, checked it over and couldn't find anything obvious, other than some burrs which he cleaned up.

So as Tom says it could be something other than the box, but I don't see what else could logically cause that noise in the scenarios that it occurs....

Does the noise only occur when the car is in gear and clutch engaged? Does it happen in all gears?

#1157
Yeah pop over love to see it. Just be careful as you might get roped in with the engine swap lol.

On overrun only,  in any gear, goes when clutch is pushed in.

Try and get a clip of the noise, I'm guessing its a whine. Just thinking how its the trust bearing? Its not technically part of the gearbox but it is that side of the clutch and it can make a noise. Also if it was gearbox I would expect it to carry on with road speed. Another question does the noise change depending on rev?

#1161
It's not a high pitched whine no, more of a grinding backlash kind of sound.
I'll try it again and double check on the road speed / clutch depress

Sounds like thrust bearing. They rattle on the input shaft if slightly warn.

I assume it was a new one, but could be faulty? I don't know what to try next to be honest

Thrust bearing a cheap part, sadly it requires the gearbox off to replace. Always about if you ever want to borrow my ear.

Might be worth asking your mate if he checked it for play? It might rule it out for you.

I was going to say thrust bearing, but you would assume a new clutch went in. Worth checking though. Sounds like it is that.

Who is taking you to court Mark? And why?

Thing is I know Exedy list 2 clutch kits for the 2zz with different part numbers and the only difference is the thrust bearing (both slightly different) so maybe that's the issue?

Exedy standard Celica 2zz. I used the reg of the car to buy it so I assumed it would be correct, I didn't know there were two sizes.

I did that when we did Gareth's swap but still ended up with the wrong trust bearing... We just assumed it had been packed wrong so used the original one but I found out about the 2 different ones a couple of days ago

The plot thickens! Would the wrong one have fitted, I mean, would it be possible to fit the wrong one if you were in aware of the differences?

If the wrong one was fitted by accident, what would be the symptoms, do you think?

Well that escalated quickly!  s:D :D s:D

I picked up the car this evening  s:D :D s:D  nice fun drive home from Uxbridge, exhaust welded back up too!

Will be interested to hear about these thrust bearing sizes, if you got info Vinny?

Anyone up for a track day October or November?

The thrust bearing we got was too small to fit into the spline on the box so maybe yours was the other way around? There wasn't much in it so we thought it was a 1zz one that had been boxed wrong but turns out it was just the wrong 2zz one
