High praise indeed.

Cheers guys.

Replacement headlight just gone in... Looks loads better

Carbon wrapped the spoiler the other day but I've come to the conclusion I can't wrap spoilers, so it's coming off and I'm going to spray the spoiler satin black or just colour match it to the car. Not decided yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Missus is back next week so my free time will rapidly decrease.

I vote for colour match. Think black or carbon fibre won't work for me with the blue.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Side vents look great Lee and definitely colour code the spoiler.

Think I will have a go tomorrow with the rattle cans. I remember doing a good job of spraying spoilers when I was 18!!
It can't have changed that much in 20 years, unless I had a different perception of "good" when I was 18..

*edit* 21 years... Oops. But I prefer 20

Oh and assuming halfords can manage to mix paint properly   s:roll:  s:roll:

Halfords paint matching is all down to the person operating the machine, from experience not the best, unless they have your colour off the shelf,I would purchase via Toyota or good ebay seller.

Loads of paint places mix rattle cans of colour code.
Prime it blue so you get better coverage then flat the primer with 800 grit. Then degrease it. then use a tack rag to wipe it, base coat it with your rattle can of mixed base, then don't touch it (you'll affect the mettalic) then use a can of "2k clearcoat" any decent brand will do. the paint supplier that mixes the paint, someone like L.E WENT will do both of these things. Spray one light, patchy coat of clear then one glossy wet coat of clear. Then "denib" the surface c##p off with some wet 2000 grit paper, and polish it up with a compound like 3m fast cut or farecla g3 but T-cut will do, just take longer. Don't sand the clear with anything rougher than 2000 or it will take forever to get the sanding marks out.

Good luck   s:D :D s:D

Great advice, cheers for that

I didn't know about not flattening the base because of the metallic.

Yeah, once the base is on you shouldn't touch it, don't degrease or anything and you should spray the clear within a few hours of basing it. Have you found the product 2k clear in cans?

Leethesparky

Ok.... Sprayed the spoiler, good colour match, polished up nice too. Leave it a few days then give it a real good tcut and polish.

Didn't take long to dry... The workshop is tapped onto a 40 mega watt heating system that circulates at 90 degrees c.  :-) :-) :-)

Who needs an oven!! Cranked up the workshop thermostat.

Couldn't find 2k and I'm not the best person with patients. So halfords it was for paint and lacquer.

Sprayed the bit under the boot vents red.. What do you think?.. I'm not sure.

I'm not a huge fan of the red under the vents to be honest, different strokes and all that.

The 2k clear is more for longevity, you can always key it with a grey scotch pad or 1000grit at a later stage and give it a coat of 2k clear.

Nice job for rattle cans! Good work mate.

Yeah thanks, I will do that later. I might be confident enough to spray my own body kit. It's worth a go.
I've got a compressor and spray guns in the workshop.

It's way easier with a gun! And cheaper. What guns have you got access to?

Buy a da sander and a rotary polisher from ebay, you'll buy both on the cheap for £60, a bottle of compound from your local paint place and you'll find it a lot easier to get results.

With a da sander and a polisher with a compound mop and some oast and you could make paint put in with a roller look pretty good, seriously.

Looks a good job and a good paint match too   s8) 8) s8)    Not a fan of the red under the vents though sprayed my under tray black and that showed up the vents nicely.

Good paint match, did halfords stock the paint in rattle cans or did you have it mixed and put into rattle cans?

Will need to paint over my roll bar feet once they are welded in

Leethesparky

Halfords mixed up the paint, good match but not cheap though £14.99 can was just enough for spoiler.

I'm going to change the red bit, I'm not loving it either.

I've no idea what the guns are... Just some cheap ones I got from sealey I think for spraying the trailers and bits for farm machinery... Suppose I could get a better one, I might already have a da .. Need to check the cupboards   s:D :D s:D

As long as the gun has a fluid tip no bigger than 1.4 you should be able to get it to spray solvent base and clear coat reasonably well. But it won't be suitable for water based base coat.

I'd invest in a little inline filter before the gun, about £5 and get yourself a machine polisher, you can use it for loads of stuff and you can get cheap ones. You'll be amazed at how much you can improve your sprayed finish with some 2000 grit paper and a machine polisher with compound. Pros get runs and orange peel too, they have to be able to correct them. I'd say it's well worth while getting a small bottle of 'silicone reducer' or 'fish eye reducer' it will help no end if your spraying with no body shop filters and in a garage full of rubbish.

I've been lucky that a friend of mine is a pro, about 25 years body shop experience and I've worked with him dozens of times. Picked up loads of good advice and I'm pretty competent myself now. It's not easy but not impossible, patience is a lot of it.

Looks really good, but sadly a no again from me on the red under the vents, i think black would have gone nicely with the black bumper inserts and carbon vents and black roof. But really like the rest of the car, done really well and great to see it look much better than the start!

Ok quick update...

Red under the vents is going this weekend.
Ordered a set of 17" rota gtr's in gunmetal today
Picking up jdl front bumper later this week ( thanks andyroo104)
Ordering the jdl rear bumper and skirts after the weekend.
Will be having a go at painting it myself thanks to maybeturbo's advice using proper spray gun, just need to order some paint.
Will stick up some photos as things change and hopefully everything will turn out ok, or I will have to save up and get someone to paint it for me. (And I'm skint now, but shh don't tell the missus, hopefully she won't notice the only things we have to eat are stock mr2 bits)
