Well the power steering pressure feed/return pipes are heavily corroded & I'm not happy refitting them. I've managed to find a local hydraulic hose/fittings specialist & his initial thoughts, from seeing pics, are that it shouldn't be a problem to replicate the setup. He obviously wants to see them in the flesh first though. Pic below for anyone not familiar & if anyone is interested in a set I'll keep this updated with costs/progress.

Mine are corroded and will want replacing at some point so I'd be interested. These cars are prone to it and they aren't getting any older so I think there will be a market for them !

Nah Mark you should get in contact with Matt and see if he'll pass details over for who did the manual rack conversion... that's the best way to cure rusty PAS pipes!!

J03 looks like you're doing some lovely work, I may need to follow in your footsteps with a lot of this stuff...

Spoke to the hydraulics guy on Saturday & he's going to replace the power steering hard pipes with high pressure hoses. Unfortunately they don't carry the male-male connectors needed to convert the rack end, so will update this with costs once he's got the necessary fittings & the hoses are in situ. A kit should be easy to put together though for anyone interested, the hoses are double reinforced & rated to 5800psi, braided finish is also available.

I picked these up facelift driveshafts yesterday as well  s:) :) s:)

Few more bits, hopefully that's it for the front end for now.

'03 front bracing (in very good condition I must say) new hubs, UJ & front caliper rebuild bits. I'm just contemplating having the steering rack professionally refurb'd whilst it's off the car   s:?: :?: s:?:

Steering rack hoses sorted for 60 quid, well high pressure one sorted with fixings ready to take a low pressure return hose. Excuse the rust - I'm on it  s:) :) s:)

That's a 4800 psi hose crimped with a 10ton press, burst is 4 times that. Braided is available but purely cosmetic.

Nice work!

Where did you buy your new steering knuckle by the way?

J03

#62
I got the UJ from TCB Parts bud, along with the hubs. First time I've ordered from them & I have to say, very impressive service/packaging!

Few bits in zinc primer & removed the rad, hoses & PAS pump. Looking very bare now. Just the brake lines left, then I'll have full access for cleaning up the chassis properly.

Hi, is the steering rack mounted solidly or are there some rubber bushes in the rack mounts?

Thanks

Are you refurbing the calipers with new pistons and seals? Or does the deox not effect them?

J03

#67
Yes they'll be getting new seals, pistons & sliders. The deox doesn't affect rubber but I left the old bits in whilst they soaked so as not to score the bores. They'll be up for sale soon all being well.

Few progress pics below, the levels of rust are a bit unnerving tbh & I've considered throwing the towel in a few times this weekend.

Looks ok to me, don't be disheartened. You are probably feeling overwhelmed. It all looks like surface rust. Don't worry.
I spent 2.5hrs sorting out my aerial, and as the weather is so crap you feel compelled to finish quick.

Yeah definitely stick with it, looks like you're doing a proper job. It'll be really satisfying when you're bolting it all back together knowing you've done it right!

Thanks for the support chaps, much appreciated. I set myself the task of sorting the front first & forgetting the rear existed, just so it didn't all seem so daunting!  s:D :D s:D  But I did a recce on Saturday & it instantly killed my enthusiasm. Anyway, I'll keep pushing on & see where it leads.

One of the seams on the support/cross bar which sits across the floorpan is starting to fail, so I've opened it up to remove the corrosion. Luckily the spot welds have held & the cavity appears to be sound but it looks a mess, so I'll have to get a mate down with the welder to freshen it up.

Few pics of the PAS pump & ABS pump getting some TLC...

As you have most of it stripped off are you painting the shell?

What do you mean exactly mate? Idea is to zinc primer any bare steel, seam seal & then epoxy mastic. IF I ever get that far   s:lol:  s:lol:
