I am fed up of driving a euro box, will a MR2 cope with my  172 mile daily commute?

What Ardent said.

+ personal preference. That's a b!tch of a commute & my preference would be a big comfy diesel rather than fold myself into the 2 for 20+ hours every week.

Me? Easy

My wife, or almost any of my friends? Not so much...

That is a long commute, 40 k per annum, with a working day as well.
Maybe you are fed up with the journey each day, rather than the car you are in.
I suggest that the MR2 is a drivers car and it does give a lot of enjoyment as such.
My recollection of such mileages is that Is would not have wanted to do them in a 2.
I do believe it is not built for motorway driving which I do hope forms part of your commute.
The most comfortable ( Company ) car that I had for long journies was a Saab turbo.
Not very economic however. The second most comfortable was a Peugeot diesel 4 series.
I had Vauxhalls and found the diesel variant a much better drive than the petrol varient for long journies.
It was suggested to me some time ago that a car with a relatively long wheelbase is the " best" for long journies and I that is not a bad guide.
Whatever you decide, may the weather be kind to you.

I used to do a 200 mile daily commute for about a year. It literally almost killed me. Wouldn't do it again.

I started doing it in a gen 4 prelude and finished it in a v5 toledo. Both cars were comfy which made the biggest difference. I reckon the 2 would be OK too. How many of the miles are motorway and how many are a or b roads?

Thanks for the advice,  about half of the journey is motorway, the rest is A roads. Does it kill yes, by the end of term I am knackered, I think a change of job maybe on the horizon!

I did an 80 odd mile a day commute in mine for about 18 months.  A well maintained one could easily do it and they are quite economical on the motorway.  Was seeing c.40mpg when I was doing that.  Having said that, with your kind of mileage I would get a 530d auto.

I find top down driving is pretty therapeutic. If it's motorways/dualcarriageways though you might want to stick with something more comfy imo

What's this "daily commute"   s:? :? s:?
All sorts of things spring to mind - even the mind boggles   s:lol:  s:lol:
I suppose it might depend on where or what you are going to or from   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

I've got the MR2 as a plaything and an Audi A4 TDI Avant as my daily driver. Whilst the MR2 is a fantastic, smiles per mile sports car, it would soon lose the fun factor if I was forced to drive it mega miles on a daily basis. Get a diesel mile muncher and keep the '2 for fun if you can afford it.

If it was a back road commute I would go for the 2 all day long but not as a motorway cruiser.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Driven a fair few times up and down to Leeds in the 2 now and have to say that it's too noisy (granted I've got a TTE exhaust) and too slow. Unless you've got a hardtop. Then it makes it a lot better.

It is however a very comfortable car to sit in for a long period of time. I get less back ache in the MR2 than I do in the Audi A5
...neutiquam erro.

I have driven mine very long distances London to Stirling was quite a few miles and I find the 2 comfortable enough.
Noise doesn't bother me I drive with the top down 90% of the time.
It's the lack of power of the standard 2 that I found hard to live with on motorways.
Thankfully I no longer have that problem.
If I commuted in it would have to spend too much money on it to keep in tip top condition.
Also would have to wash it more often and who has the time for that?

Blimey! Wouldn't fancy that...  s:? :? s:?

A 65 mile commute was bad enough in my T-Sport!

Even though the seats were comfy enough, it was the gearing.....!

Too short for motorway speeds (4k @ 80): Gets on your nerves after about...oooh...10 miles?!   s:roll:  s:roll:

I used my '2 for an 80 mile commute previously as well...and it was pretty much the same story: you're better off with virtually ANY other (boring) car, really....

My missus' Mini Cooper, sons Yaris 1.0..even other sons Clio 1.2...all were more bearable, gear ratio-wise, on a m'way run, tbh.....!

Facelift gearing with six speed is much better for motorway cruising. Nearer 3000rpm at that speed.

Yep 70 is 3k remember 4k would take you over the speed limit wouldn't it officer?
