Quote from: "1979scotte"Glad youve got jack back helen.
Whats happening with the turbo.
We need some vacuum hose clips to get the boost gauge fitted. The boost solenoid is disconnected for now, just until I know what's going on with it

I cant help but say that i think perhaps the priority should be getting the car running correctly.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Getting wheels and side vents painted doesn't require a few days off work and a long journey.

To be fair, the ride and handling was making it an absolutely unenjoyable experience. So, if anything, this has been the more important of the things as it is perfectly driveable engine-wise.

Next thing; Essex! Or... Aberdeen.

I can't understand why you disliked the handling with the 17" I think mine drives perfect and a marked improvement over stock sizes.

As long as your happy with the swap that's all that matters  s;) ;) s;)

Likewise I can't understand why you think 17s are better. After the new wheels went on it was like a revelation. It felt like an mr2 again.

Each their own I guess

Theyre not the only ones.
For me its the price of the tyres that really puts me off.

Agreed another factor.

I paid £220 for my tyres which want too bad.

Didnt realise what a difference it made tbh. I think they are worth the outlay unless its your commuter.

It is funny how there have been a few non-believers of the AD08(R)s, which very reluctantly got them in the end, and then saw the light.
Yes they're expensive, but so worth it.

Although the handling on Jack is now immeasurably better since the Monzas went on, it's hard to say how much of it is also related to the tyres.
It's obviously a combination, but by jingle has it made the car come alive.

There are some very interesting facts here though:

SP12 7.5j et45 + Uniroyal Rainsport 3s 205/40/17 weighs 15.5kg-ish (Front)
SP12 8j et50 + Uniroyal Rainsport 3s 245/40/17 weighs 18kg-ish (Rear)

MonzaR 6.5j et38 + AD08R 195/50/15 weighs 15.5kg-ish (Front)
MonzaR 7j et38 + AD08R 225/45/16 weighs 19kg (Rear)

Size differences
Front:  m http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?wi ... offset2=38 m
Rear:  m http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?wi ... 8#isPage=1 m

As you can see, a massive difference in size.

The conclusion being, weight isn't everything. The TD Pro 1.2/SP12s are very strong and very light, the MonzaRs are from the "style" range, but are still quite light for such an alloy.

You didn't happen to weigh a stock Rim and tyre by chance? I recall stock and falken to be significantly lighter than 17s n to yo. Tend to recall about 3kg diff.

Whats happening with this?
Not sure how your old man finds the time to muck about with LEDs when there are turbos to fix.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Eeh I know. So ive been running the car with the boost solenoid disconnected, and its running like a dream, I'm happy now that the 'only' issues are when it's all connected up. Next step is to get it down to Essex and get redline to have look, getting Xmas out the way and some money (and holidays) saved up, and off we go

Blatantly on behalf of Helen:   s:) :) s:)   s:) :) s:)
Car went to The Exhaust Doctor in Newcastle for a full exhaust leak check, tear-down and put back.
Tried as they might, they found no leaks. So, good news!
Boost gauge wasn't reading at all anymore so took the bins apart again and had a look at the electronics.
Turns out the boost pipe to the gauge was clamped between a bolt and the bin plastics. Explains the boost readings being off.

Also, there was a sharp bend in the boost pipe into the boost controller. No kink, but didn't look great. So straightened that up and had a look at all the wiring.
The wiring could do with a bit of a clean up. Some exposed wires and iffy connections over time.

Also found a surprise harness! Any clues what it might be?

So the plot thickens; exhaust is fine, intake has been cleaned, no leaks. Stock wastegate works (holds nicely to 6psi) as it should.
But:
- Odd t-piece with cut boost and blocked off boost pipe was originally on the car between on the boost line from the engine to the boost controller

- Odd expensive-looking harness found in bins that goes all the way to the front of the car by the radio, under the carpet.
- Wiring looks like it has been hacked a bit. The original soldered connections can be seen, but then there are some dirtier taped splices.

Took it for a drive with the solenoid disconnected; boosted nicely to 6psi with spikes to 7-7.5psi when you put you put the accelerator down quickly. Gauge working perfectly now and not misreading by 3psi.
Took it for a drive with the solenoid connected; boost was a bit more stunted. Progressive then sudden lurches and spikes as it climbed. Tried to put a bit more accelerator on quickly andit spiked to over 11psi!!!
Drove it while watching the boost gauge and feathering the throttle constantly to keep it below 10psi while accelerating and the car pulled like an absolute monster (albeit a slightly drunk monster).

Theory and probably the most likely scenario now;
Before the card was sold to Matt the car had a separate boost controller (hence the harness to the front of the car). When it was sold to Matt, the boost controller was kept.
The mystery T-piece was there to reconnect the boost line to the Dastek boost controller instead of the other one when the car was sold. I removed this when I put the gauge in.
The issues we're having are 100% map related. The external boost controller obviously took over some functionality of the dastek and I wouldbn't be surprised if the dastek unit was cleared.

So, next stop; mapping to get it all sorted out.
Been a hell of a journey to get to this point but we think the above is exactly what happened and explains the issues. The boost solenoid is just not being fired, so the boost just builds and builds until the boost cut kicks in and slams your face into the wheel. We were probably about a dozen such events away from total engine failure, especially with spikes as high as 12-13psi.

Glad to know it's not just me who's been trying to use the bit where it opens up to a national speed limit (right turn next to the Ford dealer where the Exhaust Doctor's estate is located), as my MR2 fault-finding road!  s:) :) s:)

Sounds like you're getting there at least, theory seems sound.  I'm a bit disorientated by the photos but given one of them is near the console uprights, there's no chance one of those 'spare' connectors is for a CD changer, or sat nav/traffic unit?
