I am fairly new to mr2 roadster ownership  (2004 black) and not being a spring chicken I rember owning a mk 3 spitfire in my late teens which had only 75 bhp but i used to have some good fun in it,
Well my question is this I have seen that some owners are spending big money on turbo kits etc,I think that a car that weighs less than a ton and has 140 bhp isn't to shabby,
Am I missing the point somewhere?

A lot of owners feel it just lacks that certaing "something" (I'm one of them).

A turbo definitely adds something that's missing from the factory, the standard car still has more than enough power to get you in trouble. The mistake I made years ago was have a passenger ride turbo roadster and the rest is history   s:twisted:  s:twisted:    s8) 8) s8)

give it time, they do feel quite nippy when you 1st get one  s:) :) s:)
then after a while you think what this could do with a bit better acceleration and just a bit grunt  s:D :D s:D

still great fun a standard mind  s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

On your british b road a stock roadster is a glorious thing.
Its just trying to get past that pesky caravan or motorway lane hogger where it lacks something.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Just own a 69bhp VW Caddy Van like me, and then it will always feel fast when you get in it  s:) :) s:)

+1 Scotte and Ardent.

Motorways are NOT what the Roadster is about.  Given the state of our potholes (sorry roads) and the traffic (bikes, horses and pedestrians who ALL deserve consideration) the standard has adequate poke, especially when up through the revs   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:

Over 40 mph in second: 70 mph in third and a bike coming the other way ..    s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

I swear we've been through this recently.
On b-roads I don't think there's much use for a turbo. By the time you've spooled up on the straight the next corner is there. Unless you're doing some pretty darn serious driving and keeping the turbo spooling, in which case you're probably well outside the boundaries of responsible driving.
The stock 2 with a few simple mods gives you plenty grunt as long as you drive it correctly.

Where it does fall over, as said, is on motorways where you just wish you could overtake without needing a huge gap. The turbo makes such a massive difference here and it makes for so much better driving on dual carriageways and motorways.

A side issue...albeit very important.... that noise of the turbo, it's addictive hahaha! We've had the turbo for a while now and I still drive around making the dump valve go just for fun and scaring kids.

Echoing the above.
Having just come back from the highland drive, the car is a total hoot in stock format.
Other than Matt's brace, Markiii pipe & TTE exhaust (for the noise),  mine is totally stock albeit with brand new suspension & brakes.
My other car is a V6 diesel with extraordinary grunt (376lb ft)which makes overtaking almost irrelevant. Two completely different cars.

This in shed loads!!! Could never ever ever get enough of listening to the turbo. What glorious fun it is, sod doing round corners, I was happy just driving up and down my road listening to the turbo   s:lol:  s:lol:

I know I've definitely driven mine to the point where the car had more to give but I needed a harness to stay in my seat on twisty roads. I wouldn't have said at any point on that drive that I lacked power.

Another thing to bear in mind... the fun factor. Sometimes it's not how fast you can go down the roads, but how much enjoyment you get from doing so. I may be getting older but twisty b-roads at 40mph usually ticks the box for shear fun, pushing it to the speed limit of 60 usually makes it slightly uncomfortable and unnerving/adrenaline-inducing. Although I will seek out the latter at times as well  s:D :D s:D

My problem is my ego, I'm not afraid to admit it, I like a bit of competition every now and then. Being able to give it the beans at a set of lights or on a dual carriage way and finally be able to not get humiliated by a family diesel would be nice.

Don't get me wrong, I love the corners, which is everything that this car is about, but I also enjoy a bit of power.

Absolutely! Can't even lie.
Another fun thing is those other funny little roadsters with the engines in the wrong place... I've come across 3 in the past month or so that want to show off. They clearly know what an MR2 is and reckon they'll put up a good fight. Until I hit boost.

You have to learn to just not to take the bait. Save's £5K on a turbo install

s:D :D s:D  But the bait tastes good sometimes.
I'm happy knowing when I've got a chance and when it's best just knowing...I can put the roof down and  throw this around corners with a smile on my face... You can't  s:) :) s:)

Above pretty much covers it.
Standard power is plenty enough when in the twistys.

But sadly there are times when you have little choice other than the straightys. I was sick of being out dragged by oil burners due the torque they produce.
Adding the turbo just levels up that part of the playing field.

So OP. In summary, you're correct. Stock is perfectly adequate & immense fun, unless you wish to race turbo diesels off the line at the traffic lights.  s:| :| s:|

I've come from a BMW 330D convertible and the MR2 is a lot slower, even more as the speed increases.

However the fun factor more than makes up for it and you had to go so much faster in the BM to feel the same level of excitement.

Audi just dont get the steering right.
Pretty sure EVO prefered the Golf R and Seat Cupra something to the S3.
And they are all from VAG. Probably same chasis and engine.
Go figure.

Absolutely! The steering in Audis is nothing short of shocking.
We test drove a new S3 (then new) and I was so massively underwhelmed. I was very pleased to get back in our CupraR.

And again a similar comparison; the S3 had 40 more hp and quattro, but the CupraR was so much more fun
