Mk3s arent that common.
Good garages that know them less so.
And garages that do engine swaps for Mk3s are rarer still.
Give headcase a call and see if he can sort you out.
I am SE London and he does all the work to my car.
I dont know of anyone in london that has his kind of knowledge re mr2 engine swaps.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I have not been around these parts for a while since selling up and getting a T-Sport Compressor...

...but I saw this and felt my input may be of some assistance...!   s:wink:  s:wink:

When I had my 1MZ conversion done at Woodsport, it was the first 1MZ conversion Paul had done.

The driveshaft popped out on me, too...and a couple of others around the time.

Basically, the middle section with the tripod was barely located in the cup: iirc, it was only in by around 10mm>=? It should have been 30mm!

The result was that if you wellied it with the rear suspension under load, it popped out due to the geometry.

What we did was I sussed it out for Paul, taking all the measurements, etc....the solution was to fit an extended driveshaft section.

Because Toyota are so good with part compatibility, it so happens that a driveshaft from an Avensis (?) is the required 20mm longer, and has the correct tripod / splines on the ends...!

If you contact Paul at Woodsport, or via the TwoBrutal forums, I'm sure he'll be able to sort you out....?   s8) 8) s8)

Thats all well and good with a V6 swap but you shouldnt have this problem with a 2zz.

The first time the driveshaft popped out was due to the swap mount not being used.
I went and purchased the celica shaft which is about an inch longer - same splines et (i think as i never fitted it)
It was recommended that I dont fot this as the swaps dont require it.

This time it looks like it it popped out because the engine was being pulled to the left by incorrect mount fittings.
I just need a viable cheaper than swapping the gearbox solution, which appears to be weld and tap but finding the right person near me is proving slightly difficult.

Where are you?  The gearbox will have to come out to do it.

I would say take the car to Headcase and let him have a look. If you need any casing ive got a few bare casings. I recon someone has used all the Celica mounts on the conversion and not roadster ones and the conversion mount.

Hi All,

Some news. I have gone on Gumtree and looked for some mobile welders who can weld and retap. They are wanting to know the type of metal the gearbox is made out of. Anyone have any idea?

I am thinking of doing getting this reapired then refit all engine mounts including the swap mount if it's damaged.

Thanks

I'm afraid you're on your way to another bodge.  Welding on some new metal is one thing. (It's cast aluminium, by the way).

Drilling it straight and re-tapping needs a bit of room, which you haven't got with the gearbox in the car.  It needs to be out of the car, properly secured and drilled and tapped by someone who is not just a welder.  BTW, I'd be a bit worried about welders who have to ask what metal the gearbox is made of.

Im trying to get quotes from mobile welders and they asked about the metal type.

Theres a garage literally seconds from where the car is parked. I'm going to ask them if they could retap. The welder won't do it. Once its been welded I'll see what the garage say. I know the block is cast aluminium, the gearbox cant be as well?

Go to an engineers, not a garage... this kind of repair is beyond most garages, but the kinda thing engineers do all day long..  dont' know any local to you, but if they don't have a shop with 30different mills and machines in , you're in the wrong place  s:D :D s:D

Does the position of the gearbox on the mount seem right. The mechanic said there was no play fitting it back on. He just lifted the gearbox into place.

your pics I never seen them that far the roadster mounts were used when you done the conversion . if you pop down I look for you

I can see the problem it's because a zip tie or cable ties was used to hold the boot on. Replace the driveshaft with one with one that has never been taken apart in has the oe clips holding it together

Definitely taking to headcase after it's roadworthy.

I have two issues which need resolving. Leaking through the nearside driveshaft hole on the gearbox. Picking up a seal tomorrow from the dealers. Hopefully that's the end of that.

So I went and bought a Gearbox from Sams-tsport-spares. It didn't come with a selector, clamp and the sensor. After speaking to him he told me that I could simply transfer these items into the new box. Plug n play. This doesn't appear to be the case. I'm not sure if the selector are different between the corolla, celica and mr2 6 speed as I don't know which one I had in the car from the conversion. The corolla box doesn't seems to be compatible and I cant' get a hold of Sam.
Anyone got a spare corolla selector up for sale or even better donate :p?
