Hello. My new car will be going on stands for a good check over and treating areas of rust in general. As Ardent pointed out to check rear X member and in my experience of old coupes it's always been X member , sills, rear aches which are the killers. Does the roadster have any Achilles heals to look for to add to that list ? Thanks

Are all worth checking in top of everything else you've mentioned.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Thanks very much for that. I quess the front plastics need to come out for that. I wouldn't of thought of that, I think if I left it off, I could carry more cans of beans or even a jar of coffee ? 😄

Plenty of room mate you just have to flip the spare wheel and move the alarm sounder

If the front plastics still have clips. Don't be surprised to find you might need to replace. Mine never came with any. And never seen the need to replace.

Bottom of the quarter panels also seems susceptible. They are bolt on though at least.

I take it that rust from the inside out ? I'm not at all suprised. Is there access from inside?  I would look but it's raining again.

Check the front wings, they will have debris and rust in them.

The wheel arch liners need to be removed, a series of plastic clips hold them in place, once removed all will be revealed in the lowest areas.
As with the frunk clips you may loose one or two to breakage, you will find replacements here:

Yes, and to Jvanzyl and Joesson's point, it's the crap that gets behind that tends to do for them.  Even the replacements I had fitted had some minor corrosion starting on the inside (though rustproofed/treated them before fitting).

Mr2paul

Thanks, another job to look at when it goes onto stands.👍

Not mentioned very frequently but I can't think why my car should be in very different condition to others, some years ago I found that the ABS unit support bracket was very corroded on the underside.

My subframe is very rotten and my nsr control arm is also rotten so worth checking that :)

Are you going to weld or bin?

I have a brand new subframe from tcb which I am waiting to fit :) had a go on Saturday but everything was seized and my blowtorch would not touch it, bought a map gas torch on Sunday and it all started coming undone. I am refurbing all the arms and polybushing as I go. Once I know its all free I will drop the subframe and fit my nice new one :)

My old one will be going in the scrap bin at work! It is horrifying how rotten it is :(

Did it fold in on its self when removed from car?
If not I still hold the record for worst sub frame ever seen.
My yellow V6 thread has pics or a video.

I drove it from the Coventry area to Hastings with a stop at home to take the Mrs for a drive.
Lucky for somebody nothing bad happened. #justsayin

I drove the mr2 back from Tavistock to Melksham wiltshire and been on spirited drives with wife and son with it like that , these cars can hide rust.

I have a patch I need to weld in on the floor aswell but my subframe and control arm are priority first

Dont mind being sold a project car thats fine just don't sell me a car with a recent mot that after investigation is clearly bent.

Yes the mot tester was clearly visibly impaired or bribed.

I get a good price on it though and has black hardtop and ac :)

+1.
I saw a post by someone doing some restorative work who had obviously worked on a 2 before & said to the effect of "of course the abs cradle is falling to bits." It's not easy to see it until you move the steering pump/reservoir, mine was disintegrating. I cut off two of the decent legs & fashioned a support from them. It won't win any awardsm but I think it'll do.
