Have absolutely no idea why more people don't do this? 🤷🏽

There was a yellow PFL with a 6 speed box on eBay recently. Is it a direct fit or are there adaptors required?

I would imagine it could handle more power but is the 6speed mr2 gearbox not the same as a 2zz gearbox?

Totally different ratios.
Not seen any evidence it would be stronger 2zz peak torque isn't really any different to the 1zz.
If you're going to swap the box why not the engine too?

Shorter ratios, giving a significant acceleration improvement.

Because it's 10x harder.

If I had a 1ZZ and the clutch needed replacing, I'd pop a 2ZZ gearbox in at the same time.

If the 2zz box came with a LSD i imagine it would be more popular, however having to open the box and fit LSD kind of puts the dampeners on it, also you need a few other parts to make it work in the back of an MR2 and not just a straight swap, it might accelerate a touch quicker with its tighter ratios but then you need more gearchanges to reach same speed so kind of defeats the object in lots of ways.

I dont find the 1zz 6speed a bad gearbox ratio wise, at least upto 4th but above that are more like overdrive which is what give the good mpg on runs i guess.

If it's close ratio and nippy performance you're after:  The JDM 1ZZ box with LSD (rare as hen's teeth) is the one!  I wonder who's got one of those?????

Each to there own
If you're bothered about performance upgrades why not engine swap, turbo etc.
If your not bothered why go to the effort.
Also you'll loose the long 6tg gear which is great for motorway cruise.

Isn't it only 3rd that's lower?  Or is it the different final drive that makes the difference?

3rd and 4th and, as you point out, the final drive.

I thought all UK MR2s came with LSDs? Something about vin numbers ending in A and B, B being those with an LSD.

I'm probably getting confused due to lack of sleep lol but if someone 2zz swapped their mr2 but kept the stock 5speed gearbox, would this then have better acceleration than using the 6speed 2zz gearbox but sacrifice top speed?

If you want a better gearbox with shorter 3rd and 4th gear ratios get the C56 which is the one that we got state side which is in abundance because it was used in several applications. Add an LSD and you should be good. If you want to make it better for highway you can swap in a Corolla 5th gear as some have done. I have driven a car with an imported transmission from the UK and felt that it lagged behind the ones we got but the owner liked it because it was quiet for highway driving.

Yes all uk MR2's came with LSD your correct but the Celica/Corollas with the 2zz engine and box do not,   however it can be swapped over so the 2zz tighter ratio box then has LSD, but it means opening both boxes to do so and shimming it to suit etc which is a bit of a faff by all accounts.

totally agree and have done a few (admittedly for an mr2 mk1 but only the bellhousing is different).

Keep in mind that if you just swap the gear sets from the 2zz box in to the housing (and LSD) of the mr2 box you don't need to do shimming :)

If you have the correct tools it only takes an afternoon (if both boxes are already out of the cars...)
