price only matters to the seller and buyer at the mo moment in time :)

So they look at prices of a convertible in the middle of winter and decide prices are going down.. Bloody Einsteins!

Also it's it's luxury item really not being very practical and during covid not had much chance to enjoy them.

Interesting point really, the PC magazine notes that, in the marketplace, the MR2 has dropped 3.3% in value over the last year whereas the Fiat panda has gone up 33.3%, and the magazine notes that they are now about the same value.

I keep wondering whether the MR2 is a future classic and worth preserving, a practical classic which I would find it hard to support in terms of practicality, or a car destined to disappear into obscurity as unloved/unknown outside of the MR2 community.

Perhaps I should buy a Fiat Panda......

I am surprised that you should make that comment, those sort of responses I would expect from the social media led generation who don't believe anything that hasn't been repeated a zillion times on facebook!

It is from a magazine that I have received for donkey's years and are reasonably alert to market trends in the classic car world, the fact that the MR2 has appeared recently on their radar is perhaps a sign that others are noticing it, which may be a mixed blessing. Time will tell which way the market will jump over the year.

Just keep in mind at one point the 80s 911 being considered old and outdated with severe devaluation once the new water cooled versions came out and now they are skyrocketing past the cars that replaced them because its a lot easier to repair, nostalgic air cooling and those cars are built better. 

You cant trust industry devaluations for an enthusiast market. Our cars are reliable, lightweight and easy to work on which will make the prices go up especially when the economy is going to go be crippled  with hyperinflation.

I'm not having a good day. First off was my mention of Drag Race UK finals, my first misunderstanding was that this had anything to do with Drag Racing of the Santa Pod variety, it's not!
Then my comment "Foregone conclusion that, it's in Black and White , must be correct! was a ( perhaps obtuse) reference to the Fiat Panda, that being a Black and White animal.

To coin a phrase " I'll get my coat"!

My 03 with hard top cost £1900 a few years ago 2016. Looking at the prices on line anywhere between £2500 to £5000 now. I didn't buy it as an investment.
My Kawasaki Z1a bought for £900 in 1998 now they sell for £10k to £20k. Didn't buy that as an investment either.

If a largely impractical car as only dropped 3.3% in value over a year when non-essential travel has been banned for large periods then I think we're on for a winner!

Ok, back to Spyders and Pandas.
Over here the vintage Panda 4x4 is a véry sought after car because of the myriad of classic raids organised ánd the sheer endless network of unpaved caminos. There were a whole lót sold tough so that keeps the prece from rising much.
The Spyder has always been pricey here because they are scarce. Their number does not drop a lot as the rustworm is less common here, so the price does not drop either.
As such prices have been about the same level, the Panda lagging behind only a bit, for the two since... a long time.

Tops go down, Prices go up but you don't buy these as an investment, over time as more fall by the wayside values will creep up for good examples.

Our cars to a large degree remain under the radar and as there are many more M X 5's out there, they are our little secret.

Depends on how people test out all the options when they are looking for a 2 seat convertible, road test a 2 and it's by far the better drive

It is odd how the MR2 is perceived, here and elsewhere. I have attended a lot of classic car shows over the years with the various Porsche(and others) that I have owned, and often you see a sea of MX5's, MGF's and so on but I do not ever recall seeing an Mr2 roadster. Can find an occasional MK1 or 2 MR2. I do recall seeing a group of roadsters waiting to go into a Bicester Scramble a few years ago and chatting to them about their cars, and a group of MK2's at Prescott a while back.

I suppose the question is, do you want to keep the MR2 secret to yourselves, or encourage it's popularity amongst the wider public?

I am still debating whether to take the Porsche or MR2  to the first couple of events this year, (assuming they are open)

With the prices of some boxsters now under 5k it pushes down the value of other roadsters.
If they were that cheap when I bought my first 2 I probably wouldn't have.
Which would have been a shame.

Over the last week I've seen ads for three cars well over £5,000. Daffodils come out - prices go up?

There's a strange situation with covid and available money.  Quite a few of us have maintained full income and spent a lot less.  Toys may be on the cards for more of us this year?

April is the month when we'll know the reality. It always was for bikes.

Not entirely sure how people have been legally privately buying and selling over the last couple of months, but glossing over that...

It's coming up to Spring, potentially test drives will be legal again, and at some point, I'll be needing to shift a 53 reg one (if my mum ever finds the service history).

What'll be interesting is this 'lost year' for a lot of cars, in terms of use and servicing. I think her car has only covered 1000 miles since March 2020 but it'll be due an oil and filter change based on 12 months having lapsed.

Indeed Scotte, some say things happen for a reason, some say otherwise.
PS
But if we are to extol the virtues of our car of choice perhaps we should also mention not just the initial cost, soon forgotten in the grand scheme of things ( so it is said) and proclaim the lower costs of maintenance for our Toyota when compared to the Porsche.
Conversely you likely would not feel the need to transplant extra cylinders and breathing capacity into the Porsche.
Overall, the rarity of the 2 in comparison makes it more niche and niche is nice!

I have previously mentioned how I came to own a 2 but for the purpose of this discussion here it is again:
In 2011 when I was looking to buy a "sports car" first on my list was the MGF, a family member who is involved in design and development in the motor industry suggested not. The MX 5 was not a serious contender as, excuse me ladies, the owners I knew were all of that gender.
When I mentioned the 2 to the clued up family member his response was "You might find that too much to handle". Red rag to a bull so here I am now

So, with a member of the motor industry having those thoughts, for whatever reason, it is perhaps not too much of a stretch of the imagination that is a common conception and a factor in why the 2 is not as popular as some (of us) think it should be.
