Aaah, haters gonna hate... it really annoys me that car enthusiasts slate other car enthusiasts for being enthusiastic about something they like.
If it's not to your liking don't do it, it's not a difficult concept. A lot of the current, crop of modifications to a standard car aren't to my taste but I'm not going to knock others for fitting parts off different makes of cars.
The only bit I ever have an issue with is the rebadging, create a "lookalike" by all means but don't stick the Ferrari or Porsche badges on it, especially when leaving the interior as standard.
Some of them do leave you needing to use your imagination or squint and look at them from a funny angle though...

If you fancy it, go for it (if that is what you meant?).

I suspect most people will hate/laugh at it though, especially if it is badged as a ferrari.

Is it a sound financial move? I would say definitely not.

I saw a GT40 that someone had built at Beaulieu a few years ago and it looked great but he had to admit to everyone that it wasnt a real one. That would take all the fun out of it for me.

I do like the look of the turisimo kit but dont like the fact that it has to use such big wheels that it then needs dummy big brakes as the actual ones look so small.

My opinion would be to buy the real thing or do your own custom mods on a 2.

They're not a common sight and to turn them into something else to me is a shame.
On a Mk2 I love a Dino kit but it must have a V6.
Do what you like to an mx5 they're 10 a penny.
We're all entitled to our own opinions obviously.

I don't disagree with you on the wanting to keep the numbers up, especially considering how quickly some are scrapped for the want of a new roof or moderate oil burning. 

It's the whole "don't do it, they look s£@t" or since that winds me up, again as you say, we're all entitled to our opinions...👍🏻

You're right, of course, ask for an opinion and get it. It's when it's not asked for that annoys me, it seldom happens here but I'm in some other groups/different makes and people seem to think once you put a picture of your car on you're asking them to critique your particular choice of wheel colour, for example.
