Repairing suspension mounting area

As I'm looking about at 2s at the moment, I've come across one which has the following on the MOT:

Offside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength (5.3.6 (a) (i))

Should I run? Is this something that happens to the 2s generally? Could I get someone to weld this up on my driveway.

Appreciate that there is little information to go on right now.

Carolyn

It doesn't say which mounting point - there are several.

Is it on the subframe or the chassis?

Personally, I would walk away from a car that needs structural welding.

All such stuff can be cut out and repaired, of course, but if one bit is that bad- what else underneath is ropey?

Good point, the car is basically being sold for scrap money, the MOT lists that as offside as a "repair immediately" and an advisory for the nearside:

Nearside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive

So I figure it could well be the subframe.

It also has an "immediate repair" for power steering and a load of advisories for brakes and tyres.

I don't mind taking on any of that work except for any welding that may be required so trying to figure out if I'm just going to end up spending hundreds on welding or whether I may be able to get away with a new subframe.

The obvious answer is for me to go and look at it but it's a 4 hour round trip so thinking of using Shiply to pick it up after I'm shown some more photos or a video. Really I'm trying to figure out that if the 2s start to rot like this is it generally terminal?

I suspect it's the point where the trailing arm attaches to the chassis. I'd leave that car as one for the breakers.

Leave well alone.
This is becoming more common.
The underside of these isn't as bomb proof as some would have you believe.
They need love and attention the same as any other 20 year old car does.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Fair enough, thanks both for the insight and quick responses.

As mentioned, I don't mind doing work to get a 2 back to its best but this sounds like rather too much. My driveway will have space for a 2 by the end of the weekend and I'm hoping to view one or two in the week/the following weekend that shouldn't need any welding whatsoever.

There are loads out there at the moment. Some people are asking for stupid money quite frankly and I imagine they'll be advertised for a good while longer yet. At the other end, there are some complete poopoo heaps and people trying to clearly hide issues they can't be bothered to sort.

Quick edit to say that there are some nice ones in between! :D

J88TEO

That's true....sadly there will always be people who try to pass on a scrap heap to unsuspecting byuers.
I just wish I have the space and the money....mmmmm....maybe after tonight's Euromillion draw  ;D
