Additional foglights (safari/rally style)

So I've been flirting with an idea to install additional foglights to either the lower bumper area or the line where bonnet meets bumper.

The inspiration for this are some interesting YouTube builds I've seen for Porsche 911s executed in a safari/road rally flavour.

Anyone seen this done on a MR2 before?
Is this a dumb idea?

Any suggestions as to how I can go about this would be welcome, if possible without cutting or drilling directly into the bodywork.

Maybe doable with some clever folding to get a piece of flat steel to the steelwork around the top  the radiator or to the underside of the bonnet. The shorter length of material the better, to avoid vibration, you would likely be limited to 3mm thick material to get through the shut line.
Maybe have a go at some Origami using a thick card to get some idea of form required.

Is it legal to have externally fitted fogs these days because of the mess they could make if hitting a pedestrian ?
Say it with love, say it with flowers but never, never, say it in writing.

The idea is to die young as late as possible :)

It's a dumb idea on something that YOU always wanted to be pure TTE.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I pondered this one for a while. I found that classic 911s used Cibie Pallas spotlamps. These aren't made anymore but you can get reproductions for about £800 a pair. A modern alternative are Cibie Oscars these don't have such a domed back but are a lot cheaper and available in LED.

If you don't want to bolt through the bonnet you'd have to make a bracket to fit around the front of the bonnet.

I like that. I think the 3mm bracket might do the trick. The problem is routing the wiring through that same gap.
I've just received some more homework to do!

Great tip. I really only need the external housing as I have something quite rare and interesting to put inside. Will try my luck on eBay while figuring out that bracket idea which both you and Tony suggested.
Good stuff!

Have a look for ´rally light pod´.
Though an administrative PITA over here, they cán be added to the registration papers and as such be made road legal.
Just buy a second bonnet and mod thát one.

I'm not sure what to think ?

I like it but the normal lights need a good restoration to match them.

In a similar vein I would like to fit some running lights into the rectangles in my PFL front bumper at some time, when I get some time I am going to look into it but I am quite surprised some clever guys have not already done something and a lot better than I can imagine.

It's quite a straightforward fit if you get the same lights the majority of people have used, bracket straight in, just need to tap a couple of wires into a standard relay.
There's a lot of information on it on here if you do a few searches.👍🏻
60% of the time it works everytime...

I had to move my pfl yesterday, I was driving a Fl in front + could see the PFL behind me (another person driving that, if this seems like gobledegook)

The pfl looked bloomin' superb with its blue paintwork, orange mirrors and quite low down DRL(https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ring-Automotive-BRL0397-Daytime-Running/dp/B002PIL8RO) mounted in the grille area

@Gibla
They look the part, but why does the Amazon Technical info refer to:

2 Lithium ion batteries required. (included)?

Gibla

@Joesson that's baffling, as they are simply wired into the car without the need for any Lithium ion batteries so I suspect Amazon is talking out of its backside here  ;D

Will definitely get these installed onto the 3rd car ..to complete the full set

Hugely distinctive and very noticeable on a busy Motorway

@Gibla
That's what I would have thought, as you say baffling. I guess that saying the (unnecessary) batteries are included is better than the normal (necessary )  batteries Not included!

I think it looks sort of cool actually.

I bought a set of LED pods for the purpose but found that they are a big fat headache to get approved here. Nigh impossible. You´d expect something sáfer to be welcomed but no.
Do have a look into the UK regulations about it to avoid a PITA or surprise at the next MoT.

Remembered a very nice looking compact one from Hella which mount without the usual ugly bent tin fittings: HELLA 1F3 009 094-021 - Luminator Compact and there are also quite nice looking caps availeble.
Since I have a spare bonnet for MoT anyway, might actually have a look at it.

Btw. why not make it H4 normal ones? That would double up the dipped beam too.
This classic bullet shape should fit nicely:

Meanwhile kinda curious what @SuperArt has thought of. His sourcing skills are impressive remember.

Been measuring and trial ´fitting´ round stuffs of various diameters.

The main conclusion is that you want it as low as possible. So none too large diameter and as low as possible fixture. The Cibié Pallas is what you want really and is surprises me that none of the available is likewise. Reverse the fitting, moving the lamp unit forward in effect also lowers it.

These 55W H3 micro ones should do it:

They come with the traditional U-bracket but since they are so smaal and light, I think they could be mounted with a bolt from below with the plastic straight on the sheet metal of the bonnet.
They come with caps even!

I think I am going to press and play...  I sure have the gumption ( thanks @Ardent ) to drill in the metal.

Done it.  For 37,43 Euros with éverything included, it is worth a try. Should be here to play next weekend.

All I now need is a TRD logo/decal over the Ring branding....
