I've done a search on cold idle problems but couldn't find the answer to this.
The problem is intermittent which doesnt help - happened 4 or 5 times in the last month.
Usually the '2 revs up to 1500rpm when cold and then settles nice and smooth. Tonight, I started it and it went up to the usual 1500rpm as it hadn't been started all day. I drove to the junction at the end of the road, stopped for traffic and the revs dropped right down to 500-600rpm, and the car started shuddering as if it was going to stall, however it carried on running. Traffic cleared, I pulled out and soon came to another junction, clutch in, and this time it idled back at the 1500rpm cold idle, and didnt drop the revs for the rest of the journey, so def. a cold problem.
Im going to do a MAF clean asap, and the car is due its 50k. Any other ideas?
Cheers

Thats the thing. The car isn't warm, and it isnt a smooth idle like when the car
is warm, its a harsh vibration, as if the engine is going to cut out. When I got to the next junction it fast idled at 1500rpm like it does when you first cold start it, and it was still cold. Somethings got to be wrong somewhere for the rpms to drop that low when the car is cold, when it usually idles at 1000rpm more. It really shudders when it does this.

sorry, see what you mean now, its possible you have a problem with the idle air control valve. Do you have access to a ODB reader?
Not really, unless someone in my area has one?
If not, if someone in the South/Mids has one, would be willing to travel to them as and when they are available?

mine is like this cold i think its due a servic and tune up
give the MAF a clean then and see if it helps but if not its down to Mr.T's for you

I could have written that post myself, as mine does the same every now and then. It's not a consistent problem, the car doesn't actually stall, it just feels like it's going to. s:? :? s:? It does go away with a prod of the accelerator though. The car drives fine, so I don't really worry about it...
Keep us posted.
Update:
Disconnected battery for an hour. Then removed MAF, took little rubber seal off with help of a small flathead screwdriver. Gave the MAF a really good spray with the recommended "Wynns Fuel Injection Intake & Carb Cleaner" - then realised I was concentrating on the wrong bit, so gave the thin sensor wires another really good spray. Let it dry completely.
*ahem remembering to put rubber seal back on MAF* Put MAF back in (Spydermagazine guide v. good.) Then reconnected battery and started her up. While the car idled quite fast (cold start) I opened the air box, which catches on the standard rear upper brace. I found it slightly easier to shift it to the right. I removed the air filter and gave it a good tap out, and then felt around inside the airbox to find the intake; angled the can and gave short bursts of the spray into the air intake. At first I was doing it for too long, and the engine was nearly cutting out s:oops:  s:oops: I then read that you should use short bursts (on the back of the can) so this is what I did, and it was fine. I did use quite a lot of the Wynn's stuff and made sure it got a good clean.
Went and filled the car up on Tesco 99 Ron and added a bottle of STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner. Took the car for a good blast, with lots of WOT.
*crosses fingers* Have not had the problem described above since doing this! and long may it continue.
The car was also suffering from a bit of a rough idle when warm and it seems to have cured this too. It seems to pull slightly more smoothly and be a bit more responsive under acceleration. Overall well worth doing. Considering i'm a dunce when it comes to anything practical and I managed it, easy to do too! s:lol:  s:lol:
