I'm sat here wondering where I go next with my '2, and I think there is only one real answer: I need to beef the engine up. And I do mean beef.
I'm talking the full MWR package: ARP studs (cylinder head & mains), piston and sleeve kit (8.8:1), vlave springs, valves, main + rod bearing sets, and some huge injectors. Total cost would be $2186, or £1252 in proper money. Then there's shipping and import duty and VAT to go on top... So close to £2000, then.
If I do go this route, how much roughly do you think I could expect to be charged by a garage (I'm thinking Thor or Rogue) to get the lot fitted? I know I could just ring them and ask, and I will, but it's 12:30am right now and I don't think they're open. s:wink:  s:wink: I'm just after a guesstimate really, just to compare what they will charge and what other people's costs have been when they've had similar surgery done to other engines.
Any info or opinions is welcome.
And yes, this does mean that A) I'm keeping the '2, B) I'm not getting another one and C) I'm not getting a DB7 anymore. Sorry! s:wink:  s:wink:

Shipping's not that much, some $200 for a bit more than that.

Local racing shop quoted 25e/cylinder for drilling and installing the pipes and some 150e for the rest of it, if you just bring the engine to them. Some 400e, if they have to take the engine out and put it back in as well.
That's just the work, oils, water, tuning and alikes are on top of that.
I'll do it for £50 s;) ;) s;) s:lol:  s:lol:

With VAT & the import duty rates on car parts, you can more or less make a 1:1 conversion between $ and £.. Just slightly shy of that at the moment with the favourable exchange rate, but it holds as a reasonable estimate - unfortunately s:( :( s:(
If your going with huge injectors you may need to change to a PFC to control them properly. I have heard issuses with the emanage not being able to control 550cc injectors and above.
P.S. Get it done s:D :D s:D
Think how many track days and how much driver-tuition £2,000+ could buy...
I'd question teh compression ratio of those pistons
i understand teh theory that it allows yuo to run higher boost. however I'm not convinced ref what it will do to off boost operformance.

8.8:1 (without changing a lot of other stuff, notably cam profiles I should think) will give
horrible off boost performance.. sluggish as hell, though you could perhaps wind on some ignition advance to counter that some.
I reckon, anyway.

Change of 1 in compression makes about 4% change in power. So going from 10 to 8.8 makes you lose roughly 4% around the curve. So say you have 30hp at 2000rpm stock and you would have about 29hp there with the 8.8 compression. After that you can have boost anyway, so it doesn't matter up there. I don't think that's too horrible. s;) ;) s;)
He didn't mention, but if he's getting the big bore while he's at it, he should get some 7% increase from it overall, which should pretty much even it out. Except the turbo will spool a bit lower with the bigger displacement.
I say go for it. s8) 8) s8)

True... Still, that's for the future. Money for track days really isn't the issue, it's trying to get the time off work for them. s:( :( s:(
@Mark + Aaron + Tem: Good points about the off-boost performance, but with the 28R I'm very rarely driving off boost anyway: The only exeption is 70mph motorway cruising, but even then I'm sitting at 3Krpm and going WOT from there is almost instant to 8psi.
I wasn't planning going to the 2l over-bore kit, as I've heard some less than convincing reviews from people in the US with going larger. 1.8l is pretty much where I want to stay with this engine I think, as the apparent increased (seriously increased) oil usage reported with the 2l isn't something that particularly appeals to me.
All because the guy gets overtaken by a Focus estate!
Go for it Dan, I could be tempted myself. s:roll:  s:roll:

Yeah, there are two or three guys in SC who had issues. And even they admit the issue would go away if they used 1ZZ head gasget instead of the 2ZZ gasget. It has been working just fine for many.
There will always be some who have an issue with something, like say a certain UK member with a Hass kit. s;) ;) s;) Doesn't really make the product any worse though, as long as these things don't happen to everyone. s8) 8) s8) Just my two..
