hi, coming home from work this morning, sheer tiredness, (13 twelve hour shifts in 18 days) almost caused me to go past a temp gatso on motorway roadworks above the temp limit even though i knew it was there. im now thinking on a radar detector as i wish to keep a clean licence! are they legal? ebay has loads, is it worth buying a cheapo older one, or would that just be a wste of money? i take it gatsos give out some sort of radar signal? any advice would be welcome. thanks

Hi Nelix,
There are plenty of options for you and the prices are dropping all the time.
There are mainly 2 types
Radar
GPS
GPS with Radar as well
In addition, if you have a modern Sat Nav System, such as Tom Tom, then you can't go far wrong with the Download for £19 from Pocket GPS World.
I've never really got on with the Radar element of detectors, they can be far to sensative or useless, not much inbetween.
I personally used the Morpheous Geodesy, which has worked great, but now I've got my Tom Tom, it's become redundent.
Most Purpose Built GPS Detectors attract a yearly subscription fee, ranging from £20 upto £50.
Basically you will pay anything from £100 upto £500 for the Road Angel / Navigation unit. you pay your money you take your choice.
Personally if you are investing I would either wait for the new Tom Tom Range to come out and subscribe to Pocket GPS world for £20, or else bag a bargin Tom Tom now for about £200 - £300 and get a cracking sat nav as well as a way of spotting the camera.... or else finally purchase my Geodesy and Radar Detector all in one with current subscription ! (see FS).
Hope this all helps.
Cheers
Darren J

Just a heads up, there is a Bill before Parliament to ban radar and laser detectors and laser jammers s:roll:  s:roll: . This will not affect GPS devices.
You can see the bill at http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmbills/113/06113.19-22.html#j8001
Origin B2's laser detector can be easily removed to stay legal when the Bill becomes law. I don't know what the situation is with the New Road Angel with integrated laser detector. Maybe they will have a dispensation to deactivate them s:?: :?: s:?:
The explanatory notes states:
Quote64. A person who breaches a speed assessment equipment detection device requirement shall be guilty of an offence and liable to the same penalty as if they had been convicted of exceeding a prescribed speed limit, which means that the financial penalties will be higher if the offence is committed on a special road.
It will take ages to come in though!
you could just by my origin b2 and get teh best of both worlds :-) :-) :-)
