Title: Newbie needing some advice.
Post by: Anonymous on March 22, 2006, 14:14
Hi everyone

I bought my 2 about a week ago and I'm loving it. It's a silver 2001 model with 27500miles. I have noticed that the tyres on the front are the Bridgestone's 205/50/15's which from what I have seen on the site these should be 185/55/15's, should I get this sorted ASAP. Also the tyres on the rear look brand new these are Avon ZZ1 (205/50/15's), has anyone used these, are they a good tyre to use, and if I need to change the fronts should I get ZZ1's to match. The handling seems a little unsettled like the front wheels want to follow every imperfection on the road and the steering wheel is not central when traveling in a straight line, will this be due to the wrong size tyres been on the front.

Also on the precat issue, is this something I should look at sorting urgently or should this be Ok as its only done 27500miles.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

I'd suggest checking your tyre pressure first and foremost. My '2 dragged to the left whilst accelerating in a straight line on the stock wheels, but that's because the previous owner had let the pressures stray to some very bizarre combo.

Everyone here will recommend you choose larger tyres at the back than at the front, so it's wise to get these swapped out (although I'm still yet to notice any measurable difference *ducks for cover) It's sensible though to have wider tyres at the back.

I'd get the precat sorted straight away... I've booked mine in for next week.. nothing more depressing than having your engine go when you could have prevented it with a £200 garage trip..

My guess is simple:  the previous owner got rid of the fronts and swapped them with the rears (then bought new rears).

My advice to you is if you are short on cash to swap the fronts ASAP with the same brand/model as the rear (but with the correct sizes).  I personally would change all 4 with Toyo T1-Rs especially if this is your first mid-engine/rear-drive car (the grip is phenomenal).  The Toyos will cost you approx. £250 on stock sizes.

Wellcome to the Club. First posts are usually the ones that start with problems.   s:wink:  s:wink:

The Bridgestones are well known for "tramlining" any way, but I agree you need to sort out the sizing before you start throwing it around, or it will throw you around! If it was a garage buy, I suggest you ask them to deal with it. Not fit for purpose etc etc. Could even try a private vendor on the same basis   s:wink:  s:wink:

If you have to buy and can arrange a local fit only, mytyres.co.uk appear to have best prices.

The misaligned steering wheel might be just that, but it could also be wrong tracking or alignment (or duff shocks - but I doubt it at that age). On the basis the fronts were the ones discarded, IMO this could be the reason for excessive / bad wear. I doubt if it's the tyre issue. So that's another thing to check out, I'm afraid.

Best of luck.

I'd check the wheels are in the correct place too.

If they have swapped the fronts with the rears then you may have the rear wheels at the front.

The rear wheels (6.5" wide) have a pin which fits into the rear hub. Unless its been cut off you can't put the rear wheels on the front.

When i bought a spare set of stock wheels 2nd hand they all had 205 tyres on them. I got the front ones removed and replaced with 185's. I wonder how many tyre places dont knowe that they should be staggered.

the pins only screw in, they can easily be removed without cutting

I stand corrected - although mine look welded on  s:D :D s:D

My point is - you should be able to tell wheather you have a set of rear wheels on the front. Either that or stick a tape measure through the spokes to measure the width of the rims.
