Title: Fisher Price & Sony interchangeable?
Post by: Leeber on April 24, 2006, 18:26
Firstly, hello all. I'm collecting my first '53 plate SMT tomorrow. Hopefully this should be the start of a long and happy life together  s:wink:  s:wink:
What I would like to know is are the Fisher Price  and Sony headunits directly interchangeable?
It just so happens that my poor little Brother has just written off his Celica, which has a Sony Combined CD/Tape deck in it. I am assuming that this is the same one that came in the pre-03 2's as well (is it?). Being the insensitive old B*st*rd that I am, I've asked if I could nick it before the insurance company tows the car away. He reckons that shouldn't be a problem as long as he can put my old one in his car. Apparently there has to be a headunit in the car if he's to get the max write-off value for it.
I dare say that the plugs are probably different but I'm hoping that I can get around this with adapters. I'm just wondering whether there are likely to be any other complications that I hadn't thought about. Thanks in advance.

yes and no

they are identical except teh sony plugs into a 6@ converter loom whih then plugs into teh Toyota harness

if you get that out of his celeica you will be good to go,

only other thing is the plastic surround for teh sony face panel, this si roadster specific and you woudl need to locate one.

The later MR2 has a diferent surround fitted, but you may be ok. Any adaptors required would be fitted to the celica, and so should be removed with the sony.

One thing though, why the hell do you want a tape player the size of a breeze block in your dash? There are far more attractive ways of doing things...

Thanks guys, good info.

I don't really, my assumption is that the Sony CD player sounds better than the stock unit, if I can do a straight swap then it's just a slight upgrade for free, well at the expense of the insurance company.
If I was going to buy a new unit  (which I still might), I sure as hell wouldn't buy that particular unit, as you say it doesn't look great, and personally I detest Sony products anyway, they're over-rated and Sony's attitude towards consumers stinks. In this case though, I do think it definitely represents a slight improvement on what's currently in the car. Hopefully it'll tide me over until someone (that's not Sony) makes a head-unit with integrated Bluetooth and satnav that's compatible with more than half a dozen phones and sounds half decent.

Thanks again for the helpful info, now where did I put that hacksaw?.....
