Title: Meguiars
Post by: Stifler on May 4, 2006, 12:52
Hey all,

I was wanting to give the car a real good wash and polish this weekend and it seems like meguirs is the best product to use, looking at the website there a lot of  products.

Can anyone recommend a good shampoo and polish from them, or is it a case of any one will do as they are all good  s:) :) s:)

Cheers.

I've used both the Gold Class and the Pink wash gel. I can't really tell the difference between them so i use the Pink one as its a quid cheaper.

Stifler, just remember its wash, polish, wax. A 3 stage process. 4 stage if you add clay to the preparation before the polish.

TBH if you are doing the full job, the wash shampoo doesn't really matter first time round, but IMO Meguiars Gold Class is good once you have the wax on. Its much "softer" to the surface than others, and keeps the wax finish intact.

Polishing gets rid of surface irregularities and creates the shine. Waxing gives you depth to the polish and provides a protection to the polished surface.

Every detailer has their own preferences, but as long as you follow these steps you can't go far wrong. Personally I use Meguiars #5 Carnuba wax, but the chances of you finding that locally are pretty slim. So if you are buying from Halfrauds / local store have a study of the Autoglym / Meguiars ranges.

You can always add a "glaze" after the polish which purports to make the finish even better.

If you want to get anal, register here http://www.detailingworld.co.uk for all the gen.

Agreeing with Roger, I'd say that Meguiars stuff is good and the thing I've found that makes the biggest difference is a clay bar (Meguiars Quik Clay). Use this after washing before polishing and waxing. It will make the colour appear deeper and add depth to the shine. Try it after washing and see how much stuff it removes from the paintwork.

At the moment my personal regime consists of washing every 1-2 weeks with Meguiars NXT or Goldclass wash. Clay bar and waxing about every 6 months and adding polish to that about once a year. This is enough to keep the cars looking good without getting too anal! (Roger, Steve  s:P :P s:P  ) And at the minute, although my black golf was last waxed about 6 months ago, the paint still comes up good after a good clean and doesn't feel "dried" out at all. It's probably due a good three-stager sometime soon though. Ideally I'd probably wax the cars more but just don't have the time with my job and the fact that I'm meant to be renovating the house at the minute plus I do a lot of miles in my company Golf and to keep it immaculate would mean a degree of detailing every week.

I really don't rate the Autoglym Sruper Resin polish, I think the best product AutoGlym make is the Extra Gloss protection which is fantastic after a layer of NXT.

and yes Stifler - get the clay bar and detailing spray - its really effective.

The best car wash soap I have ever used is Swissol Car Bath;

 m http://www.swissol.co.uk/products/wash-products.asp (http://www.swissol.co.uk/products/wash-products.asp) m

It's not cheap but you only need a cap full per bucket.  It lifts the dirt so easily and is very gentle on the paint.  It also smells like coconut shampoo   s:D :D s:D

Once my current supplies run out I am going to try this one as it's better value.

Quote from: "RUSTY"At the moment my personal regime ......Clay bar and waxing about every 6 months and adding polish to that about once a year.

Rusty...I hope you got this the wrong way round. You should always polish after a clay bar, then wax. You can layer good wax on polish, but once you've polished, all the wax is gone so you have to start the process again.

I polish (subject to requirements) about every 4 - 6 months, and wax every 2 - 3 months. Clay bar is only done when it needs it. IMO once it's done, if you keep the wash, polish if necessary and wax regime going another claying will not be required.

The car is in the garage most of the time, so this is certainly not as often as might be required by those who leave it outside and use it 24/7.

Note to everybody.....Clay bar and polish is abrasive and will reduce paint depth, so it must not be done too frequently.

Ok let me make sure i got this right  s:) :) s:)

Its wash, polish (every 4 months) then wax (every couple of months)

Only problem is whenever i wash my car, it always streaks like an utter b*****d, maybe a new cloth is required for wiping of excess water   s:( :( s:(

Cheers again guys  s:) :) s:)

Yeh, that's about it. The actual times depend on the use and state of the car, but basically wash frequently, wax when needed (ie when standing water stops "globulising" into small globules, and then polishing once or twice a year, or if you have contaminants (birds, insects, sap etc that a wash doesn't get off.)

Try this for some more of the how to do

http://www.autopia-carcare.com/how-to.html

If you are getting dirty streaks its the sponge / chamois you are using in dirty water. Suggest you throw these away, buy a wash mitt and drying towel, and use the 2 bucket method for washing. It will work even better, once you have the car nicely waxed.

A bucket with the soap in and a separate one with plain water to rinse the washmitt in.

Stops the dirty water from the soap bucket being put back on the car   s:oops:  s:oops:

You obviously haven't been following my "cleaning" posts Mark  s:wink:  s:wink: .

One has suds, one is clear water. Before you re-suds your mitt ('cos you don't use a sponge, do you   s:shock:  s:shock:   ), give it a shake in the clear water. This gets rid of particles and dirt. Then put in the suds bucket and you are always washing with clean water.

Avoids scratching the surface and the dirty streak syndrome.   s:D :D s:D

Just hi-jacking the thread slightly  s:P :P s:P

Roger, have you ever tried/used any of the so called waterless cleaning
products? if so what did you think?

I tried some on a different car  last weekend and I have to admit I was quite impressed with the result, I cleaned and polished the whole car without using any water!

Sorry Roger that's what I meant - adding in polishing after claying but before waxing - wasn't worded brilliantly. I've always wondered how abrasive the clay bar is

I can't speak for Roger but personally I think these are a bad idea unless the car is pretty clean anyway. When washing a car you want lots of water to flush / lift the dirt without it being rubbed against the paintwork. With no water I would say theres a much greater chance of scratches and swirls. I must admit to never having tried these products and so can't speak from experience  s:) :) s:)

As Rusty says, water is your friend to get all the grit, gunk etc off the car before you do the finishing.

Right I have read the all post.

What is the purpose of the Clay? (I get the purpose of the Polish and the wax, but not the clay   s:? :? s:?  )
What is wrong with a Sponge to wash the car?
And finally, is it good to use those electric polishers or is it to powerful and might harm the paint? (And I have to do with elbow grease   s:wink:  s:wink:  ).

Sorry for all this but I exhibit the car at Tatton on Sunday and hope for nice weather on Saturday to pamper Marsupette   s:D :D s:D  .

Quote from: "celmacmat"Right I have read the all post.

Clay is for removing almost everything (except scratches, swirls and water spots) from the surface of the paint.  It must be followed by polish and sealant or wax (or both).

QuoteWhat is wrong with a Sponge to wash the car?

A sponge traps the dirt and you end up rubbing the dirt on your paint, scratching it.

QuoteAnd finally, is it good to use those electric polishers or is it to powerful and might harm the paint? (And I have to do with elbow grease   s:wink:  s:wink:  ).

It depends what kind.  The Halford's/Argos type are apparently no good, though I'm not sure quite why.  The good kind are fairly expensive or not widely available.  It is better to wash, clay, polish, seal and wax by hand than it is to use one of those cheap machine buffers, I believe.  I used one and now I have lots of swirls that I plan to take out with my new polisher (Porter-Cable 7424 imported from the US) as soon as I get a chance.

By the way, I plan to follow the procedure Dev outlines in his Detailing sticky over on Spyderchat:

1) Wash
2) Clay
3) Machine polish with Menzerna Intensive polish to remove swirls
4) Machine polish with Menzerna Final Polish
5) Klasse All-In-One (either by machine or by hand)
6) Wolfgang Sealant (several coats over a couple of days)
7) P21S carnauba wax.

I figure that once I've finished all that, I'll be ready for a long nap and the car will look like sh*t again 3 days later.  s:) :) s:)

4 hours anyway.  Do the debadging before you do anything else.  Then wash and clay.  Then put the new badge on, polish and wax.  That's how I'd do it, anyway.

You'll probably need some bug and tar remover before the clay to get the sticky gunk from the cowboy hat off your paint.

I'm not where the 'best' place is but I'm going to get mine from autopia for $150 and I have a 15% discount code (PM me for it).

You'll also need a transformer, extension and plug from screwfix or similar.

Title:

I would use Autopia, if only because they seem willing to declare a lower value on the package.

I bought from Autogeek and for the first time in a long while, got nailed by Irish customs and had to pay VAT and import duty on it.

As for what you need to make it work in the UK:

You need a 750VA 110v transformer like this one (http://www.knighton-tools.co.uk/ACATALOG/copy_of_Transformers.html).

and you need a plug like this one (http://www.knighton-tools.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eknighton%2dtools%2eco%2euk%2fACATALOG%2fcopy_of_Transformers%2ehtml&WD=plug%20110v&SHOP=%20&PN=Plugs___sockets%2ehtml%23a110vplugs16a#a110vplugs16a)

You'll have to cut the american plug off the cable and attach the new one.

You will probably also want a 110v extension lead or you'll be carrying that transformer around the car with you.  The other option is that some places sell the Porter-Cable with a 25-foot lead.  Autogeek sells it as the Porter-Cable "HD."

then treated the roof with Autoglym Vynil and Rubber Care
Poilshed the car with AutoGlum super resine polish
Polished all the glass with Autoglym Galss polish
Did the inside plastic with the Vinyl and Rubber care as well and hoovered the carpets everywhere.

I have to admit that i did not Wax   s:oops:  s:oops:  i know, very bad me!

Wow, you work fast!

SRP is a polish with a small amount of wax in it anyway.

Looks excellent. Its amazing how different colours look so different after a good detail.

Wax does improve the finish, but IMO only marginally. What it does do though, is keeps it looking good, and makes washing dead easy.

I usually do 3 - 4 waxes, before I strip it all off with a polish and start again.

Celine, I strongly suggest you get some wax on it quickly (after washing it again) to ensure all your good work doesn't disappear too quickly.

I only debadged because i was getting read of the cowboy hat so I could put my j-spec nose badge on  s:wink:  s:wink:

I also moved my MR2 badge at the back so i could affix my laser cut eagle (at last, i bought it from Ekona at the dyno day and never came round to affix it   s:oops:  s:oops:  )

otherwise, I will use cotton bud as well   s:wink:  s:wink:

This is neither here nor there, but I'm thinking of taking the MR2 badge off the back.  I've already removed the Toyota badge (those are the only 2 badges on the back of Irish '2s, which are badged like those in continental Europe).  I kinda like the idea of No Logo, although you have to have one on the front if you want to cover the holes.  JDM is a good compromise, since the logo means nothing to most people.

I see people staring at the front badge all the time, trying to figure out what car it is.  If I take off the rear MR2 badge, I'll keep 'em guessing.  s8) 8) s8)

I've got a JDM front badge and the eagle rear badge and just lately I've seen people almost bursting to ask what the car is   s:lol:  s:lol:    I think it's great and it shows that even after 5+ years on sale, most people don't know what the car is   s8) 8) s8)

After claying mine last week (or so), I decided to purchase some garage jewellery today and after annoying the girl at the checkout in Halfords for telling her that I thought she was rude for having a conversation with her mate whilst serving me I left with Meguiars NXT polish, Plastix cleaner and glass cleaner.

This is the result...shiny shiny red car!

The plastix stuff is brilliant and as you can see took the cloudiness away from the lights.

Funnily enough i have just ordered a whole load of stuff from this site: http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/guides.html

Their advice section is really great - must have spent hours reading it on saturday - emailed them and they advised me what products would be best for my needs - so this weekend the little 2 will be getting a good dose of TLC.

Nothing beats a shiny car  s:D :D s:D  - Nice work Liz   s8) 8) s8)

Two bucket method for clean... Plus a clean mitt.... Clean microfiber towels to dry.....Clean clay bar.....Clean applicators.... basically anything to avoid getting dirt/grit between polish/wax applicator and paint when doing it.

I spend more time cleaning the two buckets than some spend cleaning their car  s:roll:  s:roll:

Quote from: "Ernie Ball"I would use Autopia, if only because they seem willing to declare a lower value on the package.

Hello peeps, just dragging up an old thread for some help and advice.

I've just bought a porter cable, well shared one with my bro-in-law, and we need a transformer to go with it.
Ernies link doesnt seems to work any more but I found this one Clicky (http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=999&MAN=Single-16a-Socket-110v-Transformer-750va) and wondered if anyone knew of any cheaper/better etc

Just looking for people thoughts really

PS - Spit, FGRob & Nic, please stop sniggering   s:lol:  s:lol:

Practically all tool sellers have it, so if price is important you'll have to Google, to include all the extras + delivery, and do a price comparison. Available on all good auction sites as well. Remember wait a week and save 2.5%   s:wink:  s:wink:

BTW think hard whether you can make do with a single exit. 110V floodlights (for example) are cheaper than 240v (usually - waiting to be told otherwise! ). Having said that Danny, I do hope it gets more than just one outing.   s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Roger has a good point there Danny, there is this one (http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=995) which is 1Kva and twin outlet for the same price. Worth it imho just in case you get another portacable and have two running around a car at the same time or want lights ... or anything really.   s:D :D s:D
