I recently purchased an '00 Roadster which had started out life as a parallel import, having been sourced from a dealer in Belgium. (I bought the car from a second-hand dealership in Nottingham).
It would appear that the car has a Laserline alarm fitted to it, I have the instructions and a master key, but no 'blips' so I cannot set the alarm.
My questions are:
1) Is the Laserline alarm the 'standard' fit to Roadsters?
2) Where can I buy replacement 'blips'?
3) If not, what alarm should I replace it with?

1) The Laserline is NOT standard fit - the unit fitted to UK cars is a Toyota bespoke unit (Thatcham CAT1 approved)
2) Any laserline dealer should be able to help, but I'm sure they will want quite a lot of info from you to prove you are the genuine owner
3) I'll leave that for someone else to answer - my knowledge of current alarms is rather limited
Whatever you decide, I wouldn't leave the car unattended until you sort it, as if the remotes are still around then they can be used to gain entry to the vehicle as it was almost certainly connected to the central locking s:( :( s:(

As your car is an EU import it would not have had the standard TVSS Toyota alarm fitted to it by Toyota UK at 'port of entry'. Therefore it looks like a previous owner / dealer paid for the Laserline to be fitted.
You can choose any decent alarm to be fitted and I have a Meta alarm on my import which I'm happy with and it's louder too!
If you choose to replace your alarm, bear in mind that the import car will at least have a Thatcham cat 2 immobiliser and that it only needs an alarm upgrade sufficient to bring it up to Cat 1 status.

There are plenty of major companies around. I dont think you could go far wrong with say a Clifford, Toad or Cobra system (i have owned or know people that have owned all of them). But im sure someone with a bad experience with one of them will come on here and flame me s:roll: :roll: s:roll:

They shouldn't do. Theres nothing wrong with any of those systems, its ususally the quality and expertise of the guy fitting it that determines the alarms effectiveness and reliability. Buy a fantastic alarm and have a muppet fit it, and you're asking for trouble.
Simon, if your laserline doesn't come up to spec, then get a fitter who knows how to integrate the new alarm with the MR2's deadlocking system. If he cant do it, walk away...

Absolutly! I had a Clifford on my Escort, had features like open the boot (not much good on our cars!) and i could program it. I asked if they could link it in with my ford deadlocking system and they said they would try... low and behold, i pick the car up and he goes "and ive programmed this button to deadlock the car for you". Lovely stuff!
I've got a Clifford.. and it's been fantastic, with a little fine tuning after installation - 3 years with only 1 false alarm isn't bad going I'd say!
Unfortunately they couldn't seem to wire it up to the deadlocking system, so if I'm leaving the car somewhere iffy, I have to deadlock it with the Toyota key..and then remember to un-deadlock it before using the Clifford remote! s:oops: :oops: s:oops:

I've got a Cobra system on mine, good alarm, bloody loud and IS wired to the deadlocking s:D :D s:D

You have propbly made the car 100 times easier to brake into with that heap on it !
They may have good user functions but to actaully keep people out is another matter !

Well all i can say is my car never got nicked and thats all im happy about. They cant be that bad if they have a CAT 1 rating now can they....
cat 1 is only ther type of imboliser and this is normally insuficant if the skum know what there doing,
It's more about teh microwaves and sensors around teh car that worry me with the clifford but i wont go into it now maybe anther day s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

Yep, mine is a Concept 300 too.
The way I figure it, it's had to meet all kinds of Thatcham Cat-1 criteria, like twin immob and auto immobilise after 30 secs... and IMHO, I reckon that a 3rd party installation is possibly safer than a factory fit...
I mean if you're professional enough to be stealing cars to order.. who's to say you haven't got yourself a UK spec MR2, and spent weeks in the workshop taking it apart and finding a weak-spot in the alarm system.. when you get to a car on the street, you know exactly where all the wires will be, and can disable it with your custom "tool" in seconds.
At least with a 3rd party install, you can never be sure where all the wires are routed - and therefore might not bother to take the risk of getting caught?! Plenty of cars you know exactly how to steal around instead.
I try not to leave mine anywhere dodgy anyway.. more for the worry of vandal damage than theft though.

Well i supose to keep you all safe at nigth, that all alarms have there week points so it not all bad but:
Clifford have bad points on the theft devices not on user interface, i know what i would prefer!
Also To comply with thacthem all it has to do is combat minor brak in's and this realy simulates the real world but at least you lot have botherd to upgrade the alarm so you are better off tehm most s:lol: :lol: s:lol:
