Title: Central locking / Alarm stopped working when on my drive
Post by: Anonymous on July 18, 2006, 08:47
Yesterday morning I couldn't unlock my car using the buttons on the key and it wouldn't turn off the alarm. I thought at first that the battery had died in the heat and since I wasn't sure what the alarm would do if I triggered it I called in the RAC, he had a look and decided that the car battery was fine as was the key battery. He had a little meter that could only pick up a signal from the key when it was within about 6" of the meter.

Drove it to Mr T and when I got there it was working fine and they couldn't find anything wrong so I drove to work and it was fine all day. I got back home last night and once again the car wouldn't respond to the buttons, drove it down the road and it worked, drove it back and it stopped working again.

Now the weird thing is that my wireless house alarm has stopped working and my wireless door bell will only work if the bell is less than a metre from the button.

My guess is that our new neighbours have installed something over the weekend that is interfering with everything but has anyone got any ideas what it might be?

Just seen the other thread, though oddly my own wireless alarm and doorbell have never caused me any problems.

My car wouldnt lock/unlock outside gaspars house, I guess due to electrical interferece.

Toni from imoc found that a faulty wireless doorbell was her problem when she had the same.

Good luck.

I had the same problem earlier this week.  Post below:

Only happens at home, so must be some form of RF interferance

The problem is 2.4Ghz Routers, they are becoming more popular and they can interfere with many things, plus Video Senders also use the same 2.4Ghz frequency.

Not sure if the key fods use 2.4Ghz, but it's possible even if they use a different wave length, that interference can happen.

If you have a wi-fi laptop, try doing a scan, you will be surprised how many networks you find !

Cheers

As far as I'm aware, wi-fi (well 802.11 b and g), bluetooth, DECT phones, wireless home alarms and many RF remote controls for AV equipment all use the 2.4 Ghz frequency band. This sort of interference is becoming increasingly common these days.

I had this problem today outside a friends house - the buttons on the key would not work (which I thought unusual, as it worked fine previously, with no symptoms of battery fatigue)

Anyway, after carefully removing Dev's key covers, I unlocked manually and triggered the alarm. I assumed the key in the ignition would override the alarm - alas no.
Thiking i had a dead key, I set off with alarm blaring to my home (luckily just a mile away). The alarm stopped withing 30 seconds and then started up again when I stopped and removed the key. However, the blipper now worked and I was able to reset.

All seemed very strange, and perhaps caused by interference??

This has got me a bit worried about it happening again - exactly how do I turn off the alarm if the buttons don't work? (standard T alarm) - I hoped the key would have overridden.

Anyone else experienced this phenomonen?
