I purchased these on ebay a few days ago :

and I have the standard sony (pre facelift) headunit which claims to be 4X35W. The specs on the speakers claim 4ohm/15W. I have soldered some cheapo phono plugs onto the (rather thin) wires provided in the wiring loom and am able to get some sound out of the rear speakers. However I only get noticible sound when on full volume with the fade set completly to the rear.
Does anyone have any Ideas why this is? Is it simply that i need some thicker wire (i wouldnt think so as this is what it came with).
Do I need some phono plugs that cost more then 70p each (re-soldering with lots of solder seems to make the volume from the rears increase).
Or do I need an amp. I'm feeding the speakers from the line out on the sony head unit (WX-C570R)
ANy help would be much apprecated

"line level" == unamplified output (it's a tap taken from the pre-amp stage, before the power amp in the headunit) s;) ;) s;)
So yes, if you're using the line out, you'll need an amp. Otherwise, aren't there 'rear speaker' outputs on the stock HU? Those should be amplified by the headunits amp.
are they rear speakers or subs ?
maybe thats where I'm going wrong s:) :) s:) Where would the amplified output be? in the block where the connections from the car are (the iso block i think its called, the white block with all the wires comming out of it

In this pic is it the thing above the 10? s:) :) s:) should there be some "holes" where wires are not connected to where I solder in the wires?
Thanks for your help
just rear speakers markiii
I think there are already wires in the wiring loom coming out of the ISO plug for rear speakers, IIRC, as it was an optional extra at one point in one market..
There's a wiring diagram floating about somewhere.. if only I could remember where!
aaron, yeah I just had a look at the iso connector and every pin seems to have a wire connected to it. Right wiring diagram looks like the way to go s:) :) s:)
right, found this

would anyone agree I have to splice the green and purple wires.
Unless of course these wires already go to a junction box or something and I can connect straight to there.???
Don't know if this will help

Yep - purple + purple/stripe and green + green/stripe.
I believe there is wiring that runs to the back of the car somewhere - but I've never gone looking, and it might only be on certain looms..
thanks scottish turbo mate, however now Im more confused as the wiring diagram for the sony head unit doesnt seem to match up with the toyota wiring diagram you posted. From either it seems to be different pins ? s:) :) s:)
Aaron, cheers s:) :) s:) I'll get some bullet connectors tomorrow and try splicing in s:) :) s:) I'll let you know how it goes.
Thats just something I found on spyderchat - may just be for american models.
Ive never touched my stereo before- jap spec with mini disc and cd.
May do soon though because the frequencies not matching the UK stations is pretty annoying.
Good luck. Wires can always be joined back together!
Cut the wires spliced the rears in, hid the wiring and i must say they sound great. I would reccomend rears to anyone with a 2 even un-amped ones make the sound in the car much nicer. Darn clip left a scratch wherethe seatbelt plastic cover thingy is so i'll have to fix that later, and again thanks everyone for your help. Please note the wiring diagram i posted on this post works for our wiring loom in pre 03's s:) :) s:)
Oh oh, your going to have to change your signature now, Dr Alex. What you planning next?
Phil
Well apart from the midship runabout centrecaps you pointed out to me on ebay I'm gonna go for a new exhaust and/or ppe or other cai ??
