Title: OBDII reader
Post by: Leeber on February 14, 2007, 10:12
Hi all, Lucy's thrown up a CEL again so rather than rely on the goodwill of my fellow club-members, I've decided to buy myself a OBDII reader. I've used the search function and not got a satisfactory answer so far. Do I need one that's Can-Bus compatible? Any recommendations? I'm not fussed about a PC connection or anything like that, just want to read the codes before deciding whether a trip to Mr T's or SP is necessary. TIA.

I have the Gendan which I can plug in the laptop, however, I know that a few people have purchased one off of Ebay for a reasonable price.

It's these ones "OBD2 OBD II 2 CHECK ENGINE SCANNER ERROR CODE READER OB" £12.88

If that doesn't work either, search  m http://ebay.co.uk/ (http://ebay.co.uk/) m  for "obd2 reader"

This is a neat little reader. I have the more expensive, pc connected one, but that one looks more than adequate for your basic home mechanic.
Thanks for posting it Tem.

thats the same one that i have Lee, so you've seen how they work.

the more expensive one that Gendan do, the laptop one will give you more information such as what varios sensors are doing in a graphical real time format, very good but it just depends on what you want

Aha... that was the sound of my broadband connection going tits up. The links work now, thanks Tem. I think I'll go for the cheapie one for now, I can always sell it on later if I decide to upgrade, I just wasn't sure whether I needed one that was Can-Bus compatible. I'm sure you said that the system was partly Can-Bus Stu.

Right then, the jury's back. I bought one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAN-Bus-OBDII-OBD2-Trouble-Code-Reader-Scanner-U480_W0QQitemZ300062030317QQihZ020QQcategoryZ30921QQcmdZViewItem) in the end. I figured it would be worth the extra £15 or so for something that was Can-Bus compatible anyway for future cars.
Anyway, the code was...... P0136, which, I believe, is a circuit malfunction on the post-cat o2 sensor. The sensor itself is brand new so I figured that it's most likely a connection problem. I removed the NS rear light unit and unplugged the third o2 sensor. I used a tiny screwdriver to squeeze the terminals a bit closer together on the socket where the sensor plugs in and put it all back together again. I've cleared the light and started the car a few times before taking it for a spin. So far so good. Only time will tell I guess. Anyone else seen this problem before?

Title:
Post by: Leeber on February 16, 2007, 13:44
Yes I did (both). When they were removing the old system the 3rd O2 sensor was damaged (the thread was stripped during removal), so they lent me the one from their own car. I got a CEL light the day after the install but that went away after I replaced their O2 sensor with a new one and sent their's back to them. Obviously, I reset the ECU then as well. I just spoke to Matt and he's confirmed that they've put the old sensor back on their car without any problems, it's not shown a fault.

hmm Liz are you stilll having this problem?
Title:
Post by: Liz on February 16, 2007, 14:07
Nope (hugs a tree to touch wood) - since I changed the MAF sensor all has been well, but as Lee's car is so new I wouldn't of thought that would be a problem.
Title:
Post by: Leeber on February 16, 2007, 14:16
Is that the same code you were getting then Liz? I had no idea. I noticed the other thread where simonmr2(?) is getting a similar CEL after recently having the SP240 work done.
Title:
Post by: Liz on February 16, 2007, 14:24
I had a P0420 code which was the catalyst not working efficiently - no surprise with not having a cat there.  When I spoke to Matt about this - this was an issue with James's car which was the reason why that the sensor was put further back away from the main flow of the exhaust so that it wouldn't throw a code.  As this code is different I wouldn't like to hazard a guess. As I said my new MAF sorted my car out.

I had a CEL on Tueday which turned out to be O2 Sensor Circuit, Sensor 2 Bank 1 which is the post cat sensor. After a argument with MR T they are ordering me all 3 O2 sensor's to be replaced under waranty on Thursday. I was thinking if it was anything to do with the de-cat pipe but the SP car hasn't had any CEL's. After doing a lot of searching it seams that a lot of people have trouble with this after they change the exhaust or have the sensor out.

Hmm think they might, I was waiting for my car when it had the oil flush done, it was parked next to the viewing window, I looked up to see 4 toyota technicians with their heads under the bonnet looking at the turbo!

I was thinking the same thing about the cat. I plan to tell them that it is part of the TTET kit if they ask as there is already a pre cat on it but really what are the chances of some MR T 18 year old spotty mecanic actually knowing what it is ?

Well guy's I sorry to report - I'VE GOT A CEL  s:cry:  s:cry:    s:cry:  s:cry:   Not sure what the code is yet, I'll have to wait until next week now. Guess what I fitted on Saturday - a SP de-cat pipe, I've reset it twice now - OK at first, give it some serious s*** no problem, run softly softly it's back.

Going to see if I can get a bush made, I've looked at the US for a "Spark Plug Non Fouler" but they don't seem available, unless any one over here knows where to get one from.

Might have to bring the Apexi forward a bit quicker at this rate.

Rob.

I was under the impression that SP had included some sort of system that made the sensor sit further back in the pipe in anycase?  I explain it better earlier on in this thread..
Title:
Post by: BenF on February 19, 2007, 00:57
FWIW .. I did some datalogging of the OBD-II O2 sensor outputs from a standard MK3 Roadster, and compared those with mine which has no cats at all.

Main difference is that the post main cat sensor's output only varies slowly with time - and only changes gradually from rich to lean with time. if you removed the main cat, it would definitely throw a CEL as this sensor would instead see the rapid changing in rich/lean as the ECU fine tunes the fuel/air mix at steady throttle.

I've tried various ways to bodge the sensor output to fool the ECU into thinking everything is fine (and so get rid of the CEL) but I've come to the conclusion the only thing to to is to build a small box of electronics that mimics the 'happy' type of output from the post-main cat sensor when the cat is present.

That way, even if you're running no cats at all, you shouldn't get a CEL as the ECU is fooled into thinking the O2 sensor output is good.

I've done the basic paper design of such a post-main cat O2 sensor circuit  - for budding amateur Electronics bods - a classic NE555 timer, square wave output, but on/off cycle time of 80-100 seconds, swtiching between  between 0v and 0.9v is what you want - but I need to find time to build, test and then install it into my Roadster.

Does anyone have a detailed pin-out of the 2003 ECU that I could use to potentially test this out with ...?

This is the reasoning behind the code, Matt drew the picture, I done the writing!!

Firstly Matt mentioned this, this is his diagram and my writing trying to explain it  s:oops:  s:oops:  .  Apparently when they developed the SP exhaust - the O2 sensor there kept throwing a code - which one I don't know - yes I should of asked.  So in order for this not to throw a code they put the sensor a little further back from the airflow in what they called an antifouling. Therefore, the O2 sensor is not reading the amount of air that it would normally and Matt believes that this is the reason why that it is **reading** that it is running lean when in fact it isn't due to the sensor is set back and not picking up the full air flow - does that make sense? Here's the diagram..

Post by: Leeber on February 19, 2007, 11:28
That's pretty much the way Matt explained it to me as well Liz. I'm not 100% certain that the SP pipe is to blame in my case. It's a month since the TTET install and O2 sensor replacement, it's only started throwing up the codes in the last few days. Also, the code indicates that there is a problem with the circuit, not that that the parameters being sensed are out of limits. My (possibly incorrect) assumption is that if the O2 sensor was detecting too much or too little O2 in the exhaust gases it would give a different fault code e.g. the P0420 code that you were getting Liz.
Title:
Post by: BenF on February 19, 2007, 11:35
Cheers Liz, love the diagram - know exactly what you mean.  s:D :D s:D

I think a few people have used the anti-fouling trick, but it doesn't always 100% sort the problem. ISTR its basically a spacer (often used by motorbikes for spark plugs) to lift the sensor out of the gasflow in the exhaust. When it is protected from the gas - less will flow past it, so giving a more slowly varying rich/lean exhaust gas content.

This setup is good as you're still using the sensor to measure the exhaust gasses - I seem to remember Sean used this with his Hass setup, but found it would still throw a CEL from time to time.

Unfortuantly for me, being completely Cat free the only real option is to do some kind of 02 Sensor emulator.

I don't think the ECU uses this output for anything other than checking the emissions are OK (and to send you to a dealer for a new sensor/ main cat if not) so I don't expect to run into other problems by doing this.

I've got to sort the rear calliper on mine first, but I'll be looking to build and test the circuit in a few weeks time ...

Thing is with mine to fix it I replaced the MAF, so it was that giving dodgy readings rather than the O2 sensor...as your car is practically brand new I would of thought your MAF would be ok.

Interesting points, I have spoke to Matt this morning and yes he said exactly the same as you Liz, the big difference as Ben as pointed out is we are both cat free, the TTE as a cat fitted so that's why you only need a small amount of repositioning of the third sensor.

I'm looking at having a bush made in the mean time, I know I've not had the code confirmed but I thought it best to get something moving - just in case.

The car itself is running fine, and boy does it rev, what will be the effect of running with the CEL, does it affect the learning of the ECU, how long can you run on it for?

Thanks
Rob

s:twisted:  s:twisted:  Yep, that's the way I've been running mine for a while. I did get an OBD-II reader and some software for my iPAQ so I could read the error codes and reset them every so often and check all was Ok.

I am still tinkering with the idea of setting something permanent up that allows me to monitor the output from the ECU in real time.

My OBD II arrived today and I have read the code as P0136 O2 Sensor malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor2) so it's the same as Lee's. The car is back at Mr T's on Thursday to have new O2 sensor's fitted and hopefull that will have sorted the problem.

No Stu it's not that one, it's made by Autonostics, when I cleared the code the CEL cleared as well, this one does a P-Scan which repeats 4 times - so I'm not sure.

It also came with a book full of all the codes you can expect and what they mean.

FWIW, I've been running mine on it for the last 18 months.

Seems fine on it - the car was originally mapped for 98RON Optimax before V-Power was introduced, so running it on 99RON Tesco's fuel adds some additional safety margin in.

Only difference I've noticed - on Optimax on my old Mk2 Turbo, the enamel on the spark plugs would come out white. Usually a sign the plug has been too hot - but I think it was more the detergent/cleaning additives they put in.

Using Tesco's 99RON, the spark plugs have been coming out a more 'traditional' tan colour on the Roadster.

It's a good reader - it just comes from the US and not the UK  s:wink:  s:wink:   I was thinking of reporting it to ebay, I did send an email to them complaining about the delivery time - it took about 5 working days

Might be selling it soon any way  s:wink:  s:wink:

They don't do the one I got any more- it was a cable, box (scantool.net ELM323 chip ?) and then some more cables to get it hooked up to my iPAQ, plus finally OBD Gauge to act as a gauge and to check the error codes that may have been stored.

The box and cables was about £130 ISTR - but it looks like they've got other options now for much less than this.

s:wink:  s:wink:  I get the same so it should be a code 0420 - basically your third sensor. You need a spacer fitting or if you have one already a bigger one.

When I first fitted my downpipe it would do about 40 miles then bingo it would come on - no affect on performance by the way, fitted an extension piece which stopped it for a lot longer but eventually it would return. Currently I'm having my extension extended even further  s:oops:  s:oops:    s:shock:  s:shock:    s:D :D s:D  to help the problem even further, but ultimately I've decided to remove the ECU and go for an Apexi Power FC - after a very long discussion with Chris at Hyper Sport.

If you can get over to Stoke on the A50 we can always meet up and do a quick reading and re-set.

Well, well well. Just got the car back from Mr T's who very kindly did my clutch for me. I also wanted them to investigate the CEL, I told them about the code etc, so they plugged in their reader to see what sort of output the O2 sensor was giving. The result? Zilch, nada nothing. There was absolutely no signal coming from the sensor at all. They actually commented that even a faulty sensor usually gives some sort of output. I'm booked back in for next week so they can sort it out, along with a sump leak and 2 misty tail-light units. I was a bit surprised about the sump-leak, obviously it was removed and refitted during the TTE installation. I haven't had to top the oil up yet, but from what I could see it was definitely leaking. Oh, and the intercooler was knocking on the bodywork so they had to adjust that slightly as well.
I think it might be an idea to start a sticky'd thread for TTET owners to document any related issues.

Bought one ages ago different make paid about 20 something off fleabay. Only ever used the once on Moreno's 2 a while back worked fine no probs, back in its box since then. To be frank hope I never have to use it on mine but its there if needed and I can vouch for them being so useful.

Exactly!

Got to say i didnt really study the halfords one, so it maybe of a higher spec i.e. connects to youre PC, etc. But from the picture on the box, well it looked very basic!

i also got a cel today  s:( :( s:(  checked the code and it turned out to be p0136 which happens to be the sensor fitted in to the sp down pipe so i have just turned the light out and will see how long it is before it returns , i was also going slowly round a roundabout when it came on this seems to be a common fault especialy on the sp decat pipe hopefully we will find a solution to this problem  s:) :) s:)
