ok i have bought Dans amp and sub to day and we have been woring all afternoon to fit it (when i say we i mean dan fitted it all and i sat around smoking and poking fun at his ass!)
we got everything wired in, but when we came to test it we have had problems getting the amp to power up.
we ran a control lead from the battery straight to the amp, and if you connected it the amp would come on for a split second and then off. if you left it on nothing, but if you removed the lead and waited for a minute and re connected it would flash on briefly.
we ended up connecting this lead into the airiel power on off connection (as directed by stu) but now nothing.
anyone got any suggestions?
sounds like theres either a wiring problem or an internal problem with the amp and its going into Thermal cutout.
Try just getting it to power up without any audio inputs / outputs first.

Get someone that knows what they are doing to help you next time s:lol:  s:lol: s:lol:  s:lol: s:lol:  s:lol:
Only messing as Dan's a good lad for doing all the hard graft as you supervised. Are you sure the power supply earth/neutral is good s:?: :?: s:?:
pretty sure that its all wired up correct.
its a mono amp. and the power is connected to the power, and the rca leads are connected correctly
and the amp remote wire is connected to the ariel wire
the sub wires are then connected to their section.
will try the power up without inputs and outputs!
I'm sure some radios only power the antenna for a few seconds until the antenna is fully erected .... maybe wrong but I'm sure Ive came across this before wiring amps in. Look on the back of the radio for a remote wire ...maybe blue in colour ?
there wasn't one on the back of mine!
option 2 is to wire a switch in to a wire running dirrect from the battery to the amp!
Did you not get my text earlier, Rich? Y'know that black wire we tapped into for the remote... Well, if I'd bothered to come inside and read what Stu had sent me and gone further than the first couple of posts it says that it's actually the blue/white wire we should've tapped into s:oops:  s:oops: That's not a huge issue though, as that can be changed easily.
The issue still remains with the amp not holding power, which is a right mystery. And you're right Heath, although you have no idea as to how ironic the whole fitting thing this afternoon was: Y'see, when I had it all installed in my car by a local company I did that because I had no idea what I was doing. Seems quite funny how I was prepared to give it a bash when it wasn't my car... s;) ;) s;) s:lol:  s:lol:
Oh, and slightly OT but I found Rich's secret hidden copy of Westlife's Greatest Hits behind the head unit and a hidden pr0n mag underneath the pax side mat. s8) 8) s8)
You didn't think I'd let you get away with that, did you Rich?! s:D :D s:D
oh how i love prawns and westlife will sat in my car!
every one has their vices, now you all know mine! s:oops:  s:oops:
(it was a nuts magazine, and he cd must have been the first owners.
does that mean i will need to take that bloody head unit out again!

if you got teh qwrong wire for remote turn oin then thats why it won'y hold power

mark we tried it straight from the battery to the amp first, it would light up momentarily, but then power down again!
Oh right ..... I dont know how you tested it but as long as there is a GOOD earth and a GOOD live you can simply put an inch of wire from the main live feed to the rem connection it should work , If this is how youve done it , it must be a problem with the amp (heat cut off etc)......
would runnig a resistor in the power cable stop it from cutting out!
Thats a bit past my knowledge .... but I cant really see how that would work .....
Quote from: "rtbiscuit"would runnig a resistor in the power cable stop it from cutting out!
nope but expect a very warm resistor
i think stu will be at liz's on tuesday, i will see if i can pop round and get him to have a look

That's how you learn Dan by having a go; your'e a top bloke s:wink:  s:wink: So Rich is into Westlife and male porn eh s:lol:  s:lol:
We have cancelled tomorrow for now- I thought that we could do this on a weekend sometime and the Braintree massive and anyone else could meet up for a pub lunch, I have got to buy a little powered sub to put in the car as well.
no problems liz! will try a few things out at the weekend to see if i can get it working.
(it wasn't male p0rn it was a nuts magazine my mate had left in there after the trip back from wales a few weeks ago!) s:oops:  s:oops: honest s:shock:  s:shock:
also just wondering, in are attempts to splice into the ariel power dan spliced into the black wire instead of the blue and white. s:roll:  s:roll:
was wondering what is the black wire? s:? :? s:?
as now my car sounds like it has a super charger. i get a whining sound through the speakers when i accelerate and deaccelerate, its quiet addictive. s:twisted:  s:twisted:
thats what mine was like ..... a suppressor works to get rid of that annoying sound s:x :x s:x
Guys, when amps do this its usually due to a wiring issue. But, it will probabley be on the output stage... It works like this:
Amp powers up, and starts to amplify whatever signal is coming in.
Current being drawn out of on or other speaker terminals is way over the safe level, so the amp shuts down...
I did exactly the same thing a few years ago, and it turned out that I'd shorted out one of the speaker cables... disconnect all your speakers from the amp and try it again. If it still shuts down, then your amp is toast. If it powers up fine, then you need to look at how you wired the speakers, and make sure that the speaker cables aren't damaged.
mr2mark - hopefully when i wire up to the correct power supply control lead that should stop the supercharger sound!
but if it doesn't what is a suppressor, hats it look like and where do i fit it!
is it like a silencer on a gun, and if so, where have they hidden the gun in my car s:twisted:  s:twisted:
GSB - cheers for the advice
If the amp is toast, no refunds. s;) ;) s;)
Only kidding mate, I'll obviously refund you if that's the case
no probs ekona!
lets just see if i can get it to power up first! will try at the weekend!
I thought the whining noise was something to do with the amps being too near the charging system of the car..... most engines are at the front and amps in the rear but my 2 amps are situated in the rear storage which is inches from the engine bay....... A suppressor does look a bit like a silencer .... the guy at MAPLIN ELECTRONICS told me this wouldnt work..... I fitted it in the car park and much to his amazement it worked !!!
Cant remember but I think it is wired before the amp in the main power feed cable..... and wasnt any more than a tenna s:lol:  s:lol:
Quote from: "markiii"Quote from: "rtbiscuit"would runnig a resistor in the power cable stop it from cutting out!
nope but expect a very warm resistor
actually yes it would effect it as Power=I2R where the 2 means the currents squared, but yes an incorrectly loaded resistor would get a tad warm, but then a correctly loaded one wouldn't
why would it solve teh problem though?
10 to 1 says its Dan's wireing! s:wink:  s:wink:
only kidding too mate

Don't you have any confidence in our Dan's electrical skill then Stu s:? :? s:? s:?: :?: s:?: s:lol:  s:lol:
Adding a resistor will do nothing to help.
you are probably mixing up that with adding a capacitor to a circuit design to reduce electromagnetic incompatibility.
adding a fuse, on the otherhand may be useful s:D :D s:D

You never saw my attempts at soldering the Profec in, did you Heath? s;) ;) s;)
the system has a 40 amp fuse in, if the fuse value is to high would that affect the amp?
well try a 10amp fuse...... The worse thing that can happen is blowing the fuse..... its safer than 40amp.

You can't see electric when it's leaking. No wonder Dan's having problems. s:lol:  s:lol:
you fancy meeting up again this weekend dan to finish this off, or are you busy this weekend!
I've got friends over all weekend bud so will be a tad busy, but let me know how you get on with it.
Rich, i'm going to try and re-arrange a date with Liz to do hers, perhaps we can do yours at the same time?
that would be great,
i am going to try a few of the test mentioned previously, to see if i can get it to power up on its own.
when removing a scotch lock, or wire connected to one. do i leave the lock in place and just cut loose the wire i need. or can i remove the lock.
i need to move my live feed from the black wire to the blue and white if i am correct.
blue and white is the ariel isn't it?
what was the black?
and if i do this will the supercharger noise go?
remove the lock completely (carefully) and tape over teh cut
cheers

do yourself a favour though Rich, dont use scotchlocks, they are quicker but are terribly unreliable
what should i use instead
As for dates I am available on next Sat and Sun if any use, we can go for lunch if you like, room around mine to do the work if necessary.
sounds like a plan!
Have got it all running! s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen: s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: s:D :D s:D
swapped the remote wire over to the blue and white!
was a bit hit and miss, first time i did it, it all worked, the started to put the dash back together and then it wasn't working.
so dismantled again, checked all connections, and tidied the wires up in the bin, disconnecting them all and reconnecting. tried again and it was all working.
tested as i put it back together at all stages and it is all working super. he amp is on, the sub works and the setup sounds great!
my only problem was that when i came to move the car i had run the battery flat. s:roll:  s:roll: managed to push start it, but then the power steering had gone! s:x :x s:x went for a drive came back turned off. came back 5 min later, and now the power steering is fine. s:D :D s:D
so its all A.O.K s:D :D s:D
tomorrow i shall check the fluid level for the pwer steering when it is daylight!
get those god damn awful scotchlock things out Rich, they really should be banned s:? :? s:? put some propper butt splices in
well stu, you can come and splice my butt anytime s:wink:  s:wink:
oooooeeeeerrrrr mrs! s:oops:  s:oops:
trying to sort a date out with Liz to come here, if you can do that date then i'll shove some in for you s:wink:  s:wink:
i'll defo come down,
and we can put it as a possible if there is time, as it all works,
and if it is next weekend i may be helping si fit his manifold!
Glad you got it all working mate, and apologies for the slight wiring issues s:oops:  s:oops:
Fancy wiring in one for me Dan!!! s:wink:  s:wink:
Cor, you must be feeling brave today to ask me that! s:lol:  s:lol:
If you want me to I'd be happy to have a go again now I know exactly what's what, so let me know if you're really want me to have a fiddle with your interior.

Liking the website there Stu, a wedding pic on the home page but then the only link is to some F1 GP pics!! Good Lad... s:wink:  s:wink:
never got round to finishing it s:oops:  s:oops: i just use it as a file dump for the mo till i can get off my lazy arse and do something about it
some pics of the lovely install in its complete state!
