Title: North Weald Vid's
Post by: Chris on November 19, 2003, 19:25
Well after much delay, due to problems I've been having with my pc today, I've managed to get the first few vids up on my site:  http://www.btinternet.com/~chris.roy/vids.htm

I've tried to keep them short enough for the modem dwellers to be able to download (this year   s:lol:  s:lol:    s:lol:  s:lol:    s:roll:  s:roll:  ), but you'll have to excuse the quality - it was blowing a freezing gale making it hard to get a steady shot, and as for trying to hold it level in car, well I seem to have got more of the dash/roof/sky than view out of the window!!   s:oops:  s:oops:    s:oops:  s:oops:    s:roll:  s:roll:

Kris and Russ also took some vids so they may have some beter quality, and I'll try and edit the rest of the tape in manageable vids over the next few days.

Can you guys try again, hopefully they should all work now, (well they all work for me both locally and when downloaded).

Dunno what was up with the first one   s:? :? s:?  , it worked locally but said it was corrupted when downloaded, so I remade it and uploaded it again and it now works (for me).  The second one wasn't present on my site as it got deleted during the first upload as it put me over my limit, but I have deleted some other pics and sqeezed it on!!   s:lol:  s:lol:

All the others work ok for me, using Media Player 9 with the DivX 4 codec btw.

I can see Kris's vids, but not Chris's.  Anyone know how I work out if I've got the correct DivX codec loaded in WM9?  (PM will be fine to prevent topic drift)

Looks like a great day!...cool vids!

The question is, do you guys think you learnt loads from the day?

Quote from: "cstevens"The question is, do you guys think you learnt loads from the day?

Only one answer to that... YES!

I learnt about the ABS on the car and how to make it work better, how to control the car, all about understeer and oversteer to a better understanding that one you dont turn and one you turn to much, it goes on and on... i will do a proper write up soon of the whole day.

I think a lot of it could be better used on a track day, but already i feel more relaxed in the car as i now know understand better how it handles in different situations... 10/10 for the day for me personally!   s:D :D s:D

Now we all know what to do when you pull out of a wet junction and put in too much right foot. Don't we Kris?

As to the day, really good fun and well worth it. It was strange (and a little sickening) going round in circles on full lock then moving the wheel and nothing happening! Shows you what happens if your wheels are working too hard!

Likewise, I'd agree with Kris's 10/10.

I went there with 3 objectives:

1.  Learn and try some track techniques in a safe environment.  I found Andy Walsh (our instructor) very good at describing what we should be doing, and spotting where we were going wrong.  Clearly you can't become an expert in a day!  There's too much to learn, plus many hours of practice required.  But I've got a understanding of the techniques he taught us, and the physics behind why the car reacts as it does.

2.  Improve my technique and feel for the car in ordinary driving.  At the risk of tempting fate(!) I feel more in tune with the car.  Pushing it to the limit (well, beyond my limits at times!) has given me a better feel for the balance of the car.

3.  Have some fun!    s:twisted:  s:twisted:   Sean, Kris, Simon and Chris were up for the same, and made it a great day.  Andy clearly loves what he does, and laughed with the rest of us as we watched each other throw our cars round the circuit at the end.

Money well spent!  And made even better by the company on the day.
Cheers guys.  If you fancy a second visit next year, count me in!
Russ

p.s.  I emailed a mate with a description of what we covered.  I could cobble that into some kind of post if there's the interest... but it might turn into a bit of an essay!   s:oops:  s:oops:

I was going to do the same, but with work being a nightmare at the moment, i aint had much time to switch off and get on with the write up... still, i think it would make a good post to be locked and kept for the site.

You mean you've never heard of Gror, son of King Dain I, father of Nain?    s:shock:  s:shock:

Obviously, being intelligent and well read, I didn't need to look it up on Alta Vista or anything.    s:wink:  s:wink:

I'd be up for day 2.

I'm contemplating if I should do day 1 again though as a refresher?

Thanks Kris!  You could have saved a couple of Meg and started recording after the spin!!    s:wink:  s:wink:   s:lol:  s:lol:     After a steady first lap, i think I got a bit ambitious... I think I was attempting to beat Andy's time when I hit the first corner of my second lap!    s:oops:  s:oops:   At least the final lap looks better (in places!).

I'm definitely up for a second day sometime.  Tho' I think Mark might be right... more practice on the same techniques might be useful before moving on to new stuff!

Ok, I've given up trying to get these bleedin' vids to work!!   s:evil:  s:evil:    s:evil:  s:evil:    s:? :? s:?    I hate computers!!

I'm gonna send them to Kris to re-record (not fade away   s:wink:  s:wink:  ) into wmv so they should work hopefully!

I may have to look into getting xp after all...
