Hey guys.........
So, I am getting my car back in a couple of weeks and after 18 months, it will be nice to go back to it. But, it still has the original Sony unit in it (its a 2000 model), which I don't mind keeping as I think it does an "ok" job. I want to keep costs down and I also want total ease of use........
So, can anyone suggest some GOOD, but CHEAP(ish, depends on how good they are on how much I will spend........) speakers for the midrange in the doors that will literally just slot in where the OEM ones are with no mods or faffing at all? I just want a 5 min job done relatively cheaply and will improve the sound I have from the standard speakers............
Any advice on this is good advice! Cheers!
I don't believe any speakers will just slot in - for any of them you will need to either make up adapter plates or butcher your stock speakers (cut the center out) to make a mounting plate up..
John, can't guarantee fitting speakers will be a 5 minute job, but if you want any adapter plates (MDF) made up give me a shout. Not too expensive s:wink: :wink: s:wink:
Then (at least) it will be less that 5 minutes screwing the speakers to them and them to the door.
BTW I've got Infinity Kappa (£75 + PP on Ebay now). They certainly improved the Fisher Price HU, and then improved even more when I changed that. They do come with crossovers and new tweeters though, which makes the installation that little bit more difficult and time consuming.

I was looking at the rainbows and the guy in the shop said they were poor in comparison to the JL audio speakers.
One of the guys on here (I bought the head unit from) has some custom made mounts in fibreglass for the 2.

Yeah, I was looking at the Kappa's but had the tweeter with them too and didn't really want to be bothering that much. Possibly got for a coaxial speaker where I wouldn't really have to bother with that.
If I have to mod the door though, I might just have to take you up on your offer of the adapter plates. Are these easy to fit then? Can you point me in the right direction of instructions? I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to this kind of thing. Give me a spanner any day...... s;-) ;-) s;-)
Never heard of Rainbow speakers........hmmmmmm will look them up.....

The adapters are as there. Just screw them in - I've got the bolts as well!

I really am crap at this kind of thing. At least with an Elise you don't even have the OPTION to think about this kind of thing!!! LOL!!!

No, its all behind the door card, so no visual differences at all.

Quite often people recommend speakers where they have the biggest mark up. They are both good. Rainbows are perhaps more for the audiophile. It all depends on how much you want to spend?
I have Infinity ref 6512si (slim fit) with dynomatted doors...took me about an hour or so to do as i had to cut the old speakers away from the mounting bracket to reuse....saved me making MDF ones.
Nice base...good midrange....and fairly cheap at £39
Focal http://www.focal.tm.fr/accueil_en.htm are also worth a mention. I have some in mine and I've been very happy with them so far. The speaker change is not a 5 minute job, but if you take your time it's not hard and well worth the effort.[/url]
John, i'll confirm the Rainbows, they are simply awsome s8) 8) s8) fortunatly i got to hear a cheapy set of Rainbows with the Focal 165's and even a £70 set of Rainbows made the focals sound like a piece of junk, just go and listen to some first, but you wont be sorry
Cheers for all the suggestions guys, but I now have something in the pipeline that I wasn't expecting, but could work out Ok. A set of good Alpines have come to my attention that I might be getting when I get the car........and they seem pretty damn good ones too. They can't be much worse than the OEM ones, so anything will be an upgrade hopefully!!!
But, if this doesn't work out, I will keep this thread in mind and check out the suggestions. These Rainbows seem intriguing..........never heard of them before............hmmmmmm........
Whilst you have to have the door panels off John, get yourself some flashing tape from your local DIY store and do the back of the door panels with it, that makes a difference too....and the doors make a nicer sound when you shut them!
