Title: Bypassing the Handbrake Switch
Post by: uktotty on August 15, 2007, 11:39
I have a new HU with DVD and it requires connection to the handbrake.
Is there a way round this and how and what do I connect that handbrake cable to?

With the unit I had I just never connected it to anything.. all it does is prevent the unit from working IF the handbrake is off. (that is if it is connected)

Davy

Yeah I havent connected it to anything yet, DVD screen will not work at all with the cable disconnected. I have heard you can connect it to a power source to enable the screen all the time.

either that or it may require a ground. Give it a ground first Russ if the book doesn't say, it'll do less harm than pumping 12v down something that doesn't need it

If it won't work with it disconnected, it can only be one of two options really.. live or ground... so, do as above and try grounding 1st, if that fails try a live feed, might it be worth putting an inline fuse to be safe?

and what value would you use then??? not worth it unless you have some sort of a clue as to current load that the device will pull

Will try and ground it first then? Just bare wires to metal bits?
I found the handbrake switch (deep inside the centre console) but that didnt seem to work with one of those double crimps.

Yep - the handbrake goes to ground when on.

Not sure on the legal point-of-view if - after an accident - someone were to discover you had the ability to view DVDs whilst in motion, even if you weren't actually doing it at the time?

Im sure if it came to light the insurers would make a case against you on the grounds you had modified the car with a product without following the safety instructions for said product.

Do it right Russ, auto electrician if need be.
