Title: Replacing door speakers - best options
Post by: Anonymous on June 12, 2003, 23:15
Are the 03 stock door speakers any better than the 00-02 (which were crap). What is the current thinking on the best makes for a direct swap?

Cheers,

Mike

I've been wondering that. I've put a new head unit in my 03 and it's not too bad.  Dunno whether the problem now is the speakers are poo or I need an amp....

PM Buster - he is an ICE wizz and should be able to help you out - on the old forum he recommended a load of different makes that will fit in the '2 - ask him nicely and im sure he will try to repost the message!   s:D :D s:D

I am going to be slightly controversial here, but am I missing the point here with the stereo on the '2?

Now, I LOVE music. I always have and always will. But having to fit my own Pioneer  head unit and Infiniti speakers in my old Mk1 and not having ANY bass response, as well as having a huge old Renault, which I thought had a bloody CRACKING 6 speaker stereo in it, the stereo in the '2 is pretty bloody good!!!

Why do people complain about it? The Sony unit in mine still surpises me occasionally. I have been playing CD's in it ever since I got the car, but I had never used the tape deck until last night and I thought it was cracking.

I have always been a bit of a Hi-Fi buff and have always prided myself on a decent stereo at home and being a good judge of a good sound. And I for one dont think that the '2s stereo is as bad as some people make out. What are people WANTING in a car? Mobile discos? You can only listen at a certain level for so long without deafening yourself, so why improve on what is already in the car when it is pretty good as it is?

If you lot think the '2s unit is bad enough to change it, then I would LOVE to hear what you are putting in there.......

Sheesh........  s:roll:  s:roll:

John,

Have you seen the stereo in the '03 model...? Its like a Fisher Price 'My First Stereo'!   s:lol:  s:lol:  (Its the non-sony branded unit)

I 'IMHO' think the stereo is ok, loud enough to play music clearly with the roof down at speed. In my old car i had a pioneer headunit on standard speakers, and it just sounded SOOOOO much better.

I have a mate that puts subs in his boot, changes all his speakers and stuff... i dont do that, i think its OTT, but each to their own i guess.

Im thinking of changing the headunit in the '2 but not just yet - im happy for now.   s:) :) s:)

My car was a UK spec imported from Denmark and it came fitted with a single DIN, Toyota branded Panasonic unit. It was crap. I've now installed a Sony H/U which is great, but with both units the biggest problem is the shite stock speakers, which I will be swopping out (hopefully) at JAE (you sorted that price for me yet Buster?   s:wink:  s:wink:  ). I've not heard the Sony unit you guys get, but if it's anywhere near as good as my new one then I probably wouldn't have bothered swapping it either.

Post by: Anonymous on June 13, 2003, 09:13
Ok, fair enough, I can understand the "strange" fittings of some stereos (the imports and the "Fisher Price" stuff!!), but I had heard rumours of some changing ths stock Sony units and I for one don't think the speakers in there are that bad. Ok, they do distorts a little bit, but only when you have the "digibass" full up and the volume at ear shattering levels.

I don't have a problem with the HUGE stereos that some people put in there cars (Buster?) cos I have to say, I have heard some and they DO sound quite nice, but havint 400  or more Watts in a car is clearly insane and completely unecessary! You just can't listen to it and it just brings attention to you. In all the wrong ways.

Most of my mates and a LOT of other people as well don't think that it is "cool" when a car goes past and all you can hear at 100 yds is "Boom tish boom tish boom tish......". Usually the Max Power brigade admittedly (not you Buster, I can't comment. I haven't heard your stereo, except for the Chelmsford meet videos!!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:  ). But is just not cool, its, well, a bit sad really.

Perhaps everyone should raly Toyota to tell them to put back the old Sony units in the cars under warranty and see what they say!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

I'm with you on this one John.  The Sony head unit in the pre '03 models is fine, I can cruise down the motorway with the top down and get Radio 1 at a level where I can hear it clearly and loudly, without any distortion.  Why would I possibly want to have it any louder than that, I'm not about to go down my B&Q carpark on a Friday night to have a sound off against some Muppet Nova owner.

LOL!!!

My thoughts exactly. In the words of a well known afternoon duo:

NOOOO NEEEEEEEEEEDDDD!!!!!  s:roll:  s:roll:

So, for all post '03 people, do you know who makes the head units in yours? Will be interesting to know......

It says Matsushita on the back, who are the owners of Panasonic I think.
I didn't find the sound too bad, it was the ergonomics that drove me mad.
I'm also a bit too disorganised for single CD head units - I end up with CD's all over the car and nearly killing myself changing the CD on the move.   s:( :( s:(

Post by: Anonymous on June 13, 2003, 09:56
Ahhh.... not yeah, there is THAT problem and I have to agree there. I would ideally like a changer, but, although there have been posts on this, there really isn't ANYWHERE to put one that makes sense. ALL the places take up to much room. As much as this seems stupid, I kinda need SOME practicality!  s:wink:  s:wink:

As for the ergonomics ofthe new head unit, try fiddling with Sony unit! ALL of the buttons on it are made for toddlers (i.e WAY too small), so what I tend to do is set it up before I move off and hope that changing CD's doesn't change the set up too much.

The sony unit is a pain to work on the go too.  I got the Sony wired remote control for it and fited that on the steering column, it's much easier (and safer!) now.

Yep, everyone with a Sony headunit should get one - there are plenty on eBay for a few quid.

Can I rescue my thread back (please)...

IMO the 00-02 Roadster had poor quality door speakers - I replaced them with Pheonix Gold units. The difference was truly amazing.

As mentioned by virtually everyone in this thread the Sony stock head unit is fine... I really liked it (until the car got written off)  s:cry:  s:cry:

Nonetheless, I'm still curious about the quality of the 03 door speakers, and people's opinion re: best options.

Can't wait for my new Roadster  s:) :) s:)

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,

I again didn't see a problem with the 00-02 door speakers. I think they are ok. I have no doubt that there are better speaker out there, but the ones that re in there are more than adequate.

'Core, the remote. I too think it would be a good idea and have toyed with it myself, but I am not sure I want to go drilling into my steering column. I think that these kind of steering controls should be standard on all cars anyway, for saftely reasons alone.

How much was the column shift and how does it look? Was it easy to fit? (I know there was a thread on this before, but I think it was on the last forum...........)
Title:

and can you get a stick remote for the 03 models?

even my LX focus has this and thats 4 years old now!!!.

Toyota have scrimped so much with this!
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on June 13, 2003, 10:48
John,

I bought the Sony remote (RM-X4S) from eBay for about £18 IIRC.  You can get them from the shops but they cost about £30 I think!!

Fitting is soooo easy.  The only work is removing the lower part of the steering column (three screws!) and drilling two very small holes through it (it's soft plastic so again very easy).  You then attach the braket with a couple of screws and feed the wire back behind the stereo and plug it in to the back of the head unit at the bottom on the passenger side.

Well worth the money/minimal effort invloved.

'Core is right about the wired Sony remote stalk thingy.. I've fitted a couple in various cars, and it's a breeze to fit.. now I can control everything at my fingertips without even taking my eyes off the road!

My '2 didn't come with a stereo at all, so I bought a 50Wx4 Sony head unit and 10 disc changer.. which lives happily in the storage bin behind the driver's seat, and I've never found it too intrusive on stowage space - despite it being enormous compared to the very latest ones!

I think that the stock speakers are adequate.. but I'm seriously going to upgrade them to Buster's choice Focals soon, I'm fed up with turning the bass right down at motorway top-down volume!

Facts:

00-02 modle has 25 W speakers around 10 Rms peak

03 modle has 25 W but can handle 15 Rms peak,

Had notices a small differance in bass in the 34-42 Hz range sounds a lot deeper than 00-02, Nothing to shout home about tho

Head unit in 00-02  25 W RMS *4 bringed down would give 40 W rms (mayb at a push)

03 head unit be lucky to get 15 W RMS out of it and then it would over heat on reset it's self ( how mnay of the 03 people have noticed that littel gem)   s:wink:  s:wink:

So it looks like toyota have put better speakers in teh 03 but put a poor h/u in,

NOTE:

Gromets in the doors of teh 03 are larger so a thicker speaker wire could be passed throgh maybe a 10 AWG instead of 12 awg   s:wink:  s:wink:

Thaks for all the links in the posts tho Guys   s:oops:  s:oops:  sorry i didnt reply earlier had my last exam yesturday and got very very drunk last nite LOL   s:roll:  s:roll:

Does that mean any new head unit that we put in can have the 4 channels bridged to improve the output if only two are used? If so, how?

Here's hoping.

Title:

I've got a Sony MD one that's a few years old (not stock one) so it's only 40Wx4 (which is a con of course cos that's peak not RMS)

depends on the type of Mosfet it is in the amp!!!!

if it has a fused Output then theres no harm giving it a go as you normally gain 1.5% on stock RMS but if no fuse then look in manual and tell me what type of amp it has on board   s:lol:  s:lol:

I've got an 03 an replaced the std h/u with a Kenwood 5090r but I still think that the overall sound quality is poor - I think the speakers are too harsh. A system with a good sound quality will not sound partucularly loud even when played at high levels - as I witnessed when I went to my local installers and sat in his car - excellent sound quality from component speakers. Even when cranked up it didn't feel like my ears were bleeding even though it was f' loud. I think better speakers are the answer. On my list of plans.

Do you want the best or a direct swap?  s;) ;) s;)

Best would be Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.5". It's not direct swap, you have to buy/make a bracket for it. I just ripped the stock speakers off from the plastic bracket and reused it.

At the time, the average price for the PSD-216 Premium was £300.  After a long search, I found them in a shop in Leicester (http://www.cel-direct.com) for £250.

I believe now they have been replaced with the PCE-216 (http://www.mbquart.com/2003/en_US/products/prod_detail.asp?isArchive=&cat=auto&series=premium%20series&strt=1&model=PCE+216) so you might find them even cheaper.

They are not very good for SPL applications but the sound quality is simply excellent.  Furthermore, a sub is not needed as the frequency range goes as low as 38Hz!!!

Fitting them is not straight forward as they are not direct replacement; you will have to either attach some aftermarket brackets or dismantle the OEM ones and attach them to the new speakers.  I have posted a similar thread (with pics) at Spyderchat...  Unfortunately, it's down...

Post by: GSB on August 19, 2003, 11:47
Ok, if you've got standard speakers, then changing them is a fairly simple task. You need to get yourself a set of 6.5" components, these have a a single cone Mid/Bass for the lower door and a small tweeter for the upper door, and use a crossover network to split the signal accordingly between the two.

The main problem is the fit, as the holes arent particularly deep. That said, I havent heard of anyone whos had interference problems yet. Makes that are known to fit include Infinity, and MB Quart.

Cost is up to you, both the above manufacturers offer several options. ranging from around £100 to well over £300. Bear in mind that while you get what you pay for, the £100 option is still light years ahead of the standard fit stuff. When deciding how much to spend, bear in mind that you arent in an ideal listening environment.

Installation is fairly simple, but can be as complicated as you want it to be.

The simplest way is to take off the door trims, and remove the standard speakers. You then cut the guts out of the standard speakers and mount your new speakers inside them and screw them back to the door. swap the old tweeter for the new on using the original brakets, secure your crossover and wire the two speakers to the cars original wiring.

There are addtional things you can do that complicate things, but can be worthwhile, chief of these is the installation of a sound absorbing material such as dynamat, this helps your new speakers produce a better sound, and prevents a lot of rattles. You can replace the speaker cables to your head unit with heavier guage OFC cables, and you can make MDF speaker mounts instead of gutting your standard speakers. It all depends how much time and effort you want to put in and how handy you are with your toolkit...

Look in Spydermagazine for more details and photo "how-to's".

Buster posted a guide to fitting component speakers here...

http://www.mr2roc.org/viewtopic.php?t=144&start=0

I fitted the Focals using Buster's post as a guide and found it v useful.

I'm sure there's cheaper and easier alternatives that would give a good improvement without messing around with MDF surrounds and dynomat, but I'm very happy with the result!!    s:D :D s:D

For once I'd have to disagree with John Woodward... I thought the stock speakers very poor, and the Focals are a huge improvement!  There's greater range and clarity; you can get enough volume to listen on the motorway without distortion; you don't need to change the bass setting for every change of CD.  To me, saying the stock speakers are "good enough, why replace them?" is a bit like saying an MGF is "a good enough roadster, why have an MR2?"    s:wink:  s:wink:

I ordered mine by following the link that Buster includes, but I believe that Halfords also now sell the Focals at £130 (which would have saved me a 60 mile round trip to Guildford to collect my speakers from the "local" depot after they tried to deliver when I was out!)

Sorry I still haven't answered the original question on this thread, but it might lead a few people to Buster's guide if nothing else.

Speaker choice is a very personal disition because everybody has different hearing. what may sound nice to somone here may sound not as good to somone else.

So i would sugest going to your local Halfords !(  s:shock:  s:shock:   there i said it   s:twisted:  s:twisted:  ) and have a listen to all the speakers on the wall that you can listen to and pick what make you like and then what power rateing you like and then weather a coxial set is better than coponents !

once you have chossen the make etc buy them online as you will get it cheaper! but rember they wont sound as puchy in tehcar as in halfords, as halfords cheat they put them in a sealed box which emans the bass will sound very tigth and not drop as low as it will in the car but it wont make much differentce   s:lol:  s:lol:

I wish ppl stop doing that, or we won't have anything but online stores after a while...

Anyway, it IS a good advice to actually lister for what you like. I did just that and ended up with Infinity Kappa Perfects. Nothing else was as clear as they, though some came very, very close.

Personally, I hate glass fibre. Can't stand the stuff as it makes me itch like buggery.

But if your willing to have a go at re-creating the UD subwoofer Jnr, and its as good as the original (and assuming Steve Texter doesn't mind, I'd hate for you to incur the wrath of SC's Ed Black - Steves biggest customer), then you can put me down at the top of your list of buyers for the finished product.

In a nutshell, Make it and I'll buy one off you...

Seriously, I first heard the Reference series. They sounded ok, a bit strong on bass, but nothing serious. If I got them without listening to anything else, I'd probably be very happy about them.

Then heard the Kappas and there's a HUGE difference between these two. The Kappa has so much cleaner sounds than the reference, that I bet no one will buy the reference after hearing the Kappas. I know I wouldn't. After Kappa, the reference sounds like someone filled my ears with mushrooms and some teen turned the bass to the max.

The difference (in sound) between Kappa and Kappa Perfect wasn't that big. I'd be happy with both, but they only had Kappa Perfects in store so I got them.

For info, another supplier of the Focals is SMC Sound and Vision -  w www.smcsoundandvision.co.uk (http://www.smcsoundandvision.co.uk) w  who seem quite nice and have got them in stock.
Unfortunately for me it's in Shrewsbury but hopefully tomorrow will be a nice day for a trip out.

On a slightly different note I saw one of these (link below) yesterday and the Profile 2 looks like it's a good size to lurk inconspicuously somewhere.
Unless they get really hot and melt stuff.  I'm sure Buster has the lowdown.

Well pals if you want to give it a go, give it a go.  But please remember that when Steve and I originally discussed this product I told him to make it symmetrical so that the British and Japanese markets could use the speaker.  Those of you without AC in your cars can simply buy the US Spec version, but with minor modifications to the mounting brackets (mirror imaging) you can mount the UD Sub, Jr. up under your dash too just like we do here in the land of the free and the home of the Atlanta Braves.  Many have tried to duplicate the UD Sub, Jr.  and all have failed.  We are fortunate that an automotive stereo genius like Steve Texter, took almost a year to sort this one out for us.  But please do send over your goons, I have not opened up a can of kick ass in a while and you would just make my day.

Goons? Kris and Craig?

I should think that the spare half a can of leftover 'kick-ass' in the back of the shed should do the job nicely...   s:lol:  s:lol:

Thanks for your input Ed. I myself looked into the UD sub Jnr, but it was looking to be prohibitively expensive once you add the transport costs and taxes payable to Her Majesties government, and although I heard that the unit was theoretically supposed to fit in a right hand drive car, no one I know of has actually done it...

Anyway, you know us Brit's, we're the same as you guys. if a product designed for the MR2 has been designed by someone who knows what he's talking about and has "Made in England" written all over it, we cant get the money out quick enough. It's a sickness, but we just cant help ourselves...

Well fellers, how about this one?  Have someone investigate the taxing laws on "kits."  I will talk to Steve about the feasibility of perhaps making the UD Sub as an assemblage of parts which you folks can then assemble into a finished product and then secure and add your own JL Audio 6W0 subwoofer.  Now this assumes that you can secure the speaker at a reasonable price and have the necessary shop facilities to put it together so that it stays that way, but if I am not mistaken, parts are taxed at a somewhat lower rate than finished products in that they require "British Input." or some other such garbage.  For all I know they may even ship more cheaply.

Another way would be to do a group buy.  I just now spoke to Steve Texter who told me that shipping one UD Sub to the UK was prohibitively expensive, but twenty was very little more trouble.  So, give your copy a try, but don't write off the original product just yet.  Hundreds of UD Subs have been sold in the States and in other countries who drive on the proper side of the road and there has never been a single complaint.

Ed,
thanks for teh info but as you all well know the sub Jnr only takes a 6" woofer !!! and that is not bigg engoth for me so im going to make it so you can get the JL 8" 8v3 this is what i have the the back of mine and i would like to see if i can mount it under the dash. so it wont be a complete copy so your ideas are safe and i promise i will not nick them   s:) :) s:)

Jimbob,
Those amps are nice but the better one to go for are the genisis profile amp, give around the smae power infact a little more but it is a lot slimmer so more felxibilty to fit them, good find tho   s:wink:  s:wink:

Don't write off the JL Audio 6W0 six and one half inch subwoofer so quickly.  I own the only UD Sub, Sr. in the world.  It runs a JL Audio 8W6, the best eight inch subwoofer ever made and sadly, no longer available because it became too expensive to produce.  During the testing and shakeout of the UD Sub, Jr with the 6W0 in it, I ran around with a UD Sub, Jr. for almost three months.  In all honesty, I could not hear the difference.  My pals at Musical Touch told me that they would NEVER again try to cram an eight inch sub up under our dashes because it was so much trouble.  Mine works great and I love it, but I would not mind swapping it for a UD Sub, Jr.  Folks who hear the 6W0 simply can't believe that all that bass is coming from one six and a half inch speaker.  They generally estimate that at least one and sometimes two ten inch speakers are making all that sound.  It is true that you will not win any SPL contests with it, but if that is what you have in mind, why aren't you driving a van?

LOL had a fiesta with 3 15" subs for SPL contests but sold it so i use the 2 for it style and speed and the LADIES   s:P :P s:P

getting back to the issue of subs. i have fitted 2 of the 6.5" JL subs in another car before in the front door pods and they did sound nice for there size but my personal preferance is that they dont drop low engoth and seam to not cope with the sub 60 hz range as well as a 8" (which in theroy it shound't)

i find with my single 8" JL 600 watts 2 ohm which is getting 400 Watts RMS on a 2 ohm mono stable ! it kciks very well so i would think if i can get the rigth voulme sized box being 1 cubic litre ported i could make it sound jsut as good under the dash

ED, dose any of the JL gear over in the states differ from the gear over here ???

cheers

JL Audio is JL Audio no matter where you are, I believe.  Of course they are made in Florida, so perhaps like our orange juice they are more fresh here.  Of course, everything sounds, looks and feels better in Florida.  Perhaps you did not have an adequate enclosure on the 6W0 speakers in the doors.  Both Steve and I have very good ears, but he relies upon electronic measurements as well as ear tests and there really is no difference.  The "0" series speakers from JL are newer and have some of the amazing technology found in their new 7 series which is simply kicking the audio world's butt over here.  I have heard that JL stuff is very expensive in Limeyland, and while not cheap is at least reasonable here in the states.  You guys need to send over a guy with a big empty steamer trunk and let him stock up and then smuggle them through customs as "Medical Equipment."

I know this is an old post but I just cannot believe anyone could in their wildest dreams defend the stock speakers!!!
They are the crappest thing I've ever heard, like listening to a £9.99 cheap a transistor radio, or clock radio. No bass just loads of upper mid and harsh treble!
I guess a lot must have changed in 10 years, lol

In case anyone else finds this thread, the stock speakers are  sshit shit sshit e.
End of  s:) :) s:)
