Check the garage, loads of people have bought the beesting aerial, however the reception is not as good as the electric aerial according to Aaron.

you could always rewire the passenger window disable switch to be one that controls the aerial,

ie. the aerial is down all the time, unless you have the radio on, then you can select to put it up and down as required.

its in a how-to-do thread on here, and even a morris dancing cider drinking retro man like me can do it, so i guess im saying its real easy

brilliant, thanks for the help, think im going to try and do that!! would like to have the option but im not even bothered if i dont have it, i just hate the look of it. with the roof down it just ruins the whole sleek look of it!!

Do you have the original fit Sony? - If so, you can just switch off the traffic announcement and the auto frequency (TA-off, AF-off) and the aerial will stay down if you are listening to CDs and not using the radio.

everything is standard in it at the moment so whatever HU is standard in a post 03. i dont have TA on anyway but i dont know about the other option, will defo give it a go today tho.

You could always drive through a carpark barrier as it's closing like i did  s:oops:  s:oops:

The happier result was the aerial is still functional, but it  doesn't extend one of the sections so it's a more appealing length (steady there Russ) and reception is still fine.   s8) 8) s8)

s:lol:  s:lol:  Nic! That's one way of doing it, I suppose..

Anyway - I love my LT shorty.. It gets basically zero radio reception (well, I pick up one local station!) but it looks very nice indeed.  Form over function, in this case  s;) ;) s;)

You can get them from LordTakuban (aka Justin) via his website (http://www.takubanmotorsports.com/) or if you PM him on SpyderChat or here (at least I think he's registered on here..).

Hi, I'm a proud new owner of an MR2 and I think this aerial looks far and away better than the original. I've visited LordTakuban's site and wasnt sure whether I need just the aerial for $30 or aerial with kit which is about $99. Would this then have to go to the garage or is it simple to fit yourself? (Grateful for any advice on how you did it?) - New member so apologies for my lack of konwledge !!
Title: Re: damn aerial
Post by: aaronjb on July 6, 2008, 11:50
All UK Roadsters came with the electric aerial, so you'll need the full kit - which includes the "fixed" base that the stubby antenna attaches to.

I should point out that the fixed base does have a Toyota part number, so it is available from UK Toyota dealers as well.. But with the exchange rate, and the 'ease' factor of just getting it all from Justin, I ordered the whole kit from him  s:) :) s:)

LT has the fitting instructions and part numbers on the SC website here (http://spyderchat.com/forums/index.php?s=e503136c39dd86b9d4ea129cd18d6945&showtopic=35056&st=0&start=0). It's fiddly but fairly easy.

Did you read the bit that says you don't get very good reception, especially outside towns??

I'm not using mine, it's in the parts bin, so if you want it for £8 by normal post it's yours. You'll still have to buy the manual mast etc either from LT or Toyota.

Hi Smithy

I Took the rear wheel arch cover off and unpluged the aerial , took about 20mins not far from you if you want a hand

Post by: Anonymous on January 25, 2009, 11:21
You can shorten the standard ariel by getting to the motor from the wheel arch taking the motor apart to get to plastic teeth of the mast, you cut the teeth down and melt the end into a small blob and put it back together.

Instructions are on Spyderchat.

A word of warning though, reception outside towns is not good with the short one, so if you use your radio a lot you will be disappointed. Something to do with differences between US & UK transmissions I think somebody said.

I replaced it in the end with MrT manual wippy black.

There was a HOW TO on LT's thread on Spyderchat, I'm surprised he didn't put it in the kit. Have a search.

Basically, you don't need to take all the wheel arch off, just the clips on RHS and bend it back. You will also have to take the driver's side cubby apart to get the wire back into the car and fixed. Just remember how you dismantled it, and fit is reverse.

Nothing to do at the HU end at all.

<edit> Sorry, just seen you are a newbie. Welcome to the fold!

Managed to fit the Lord Takuban stubby on Sunday was relatively easy but the instructions had a few parts that wernt essential, you only have to take off the front half of the wheel arch to access the aerial... and no need what so ever to take the seats out  s:? :? s:?  ? aslong as you move it forward, you have plenty of room to remove the cabins behind! Looks alot neater, but as predicted the signal is not great so CD's from now on!

Thought I would drag up a 2yr old thread rather than start a new one!

So, does any one know the Toyota part number for the fixed base that a generic stubby could be screwed into?

I know the issues with reception, and I have a cunning plan which I will write up when tested - just need a good base to fill the hole...

Pulling up an old thread here, but some people have mention a how to thread on rewiring the electric aerial to the passenger window switch

"you could always rewire the passenger window disable switch to be one that controls the aerial"

I need to do this (once I have got my motor sorted (apparently the clutch is slipping on it) I have no idea what to do about that yet  s:P :P s:P  but would like to rewire the aerial to the switch after I have sorted the motor. Could someone please direct me to this how to thread???

Cheers  s:) :) s:)
