Title: Fitting A Aerial Help Please
Post by: Anonymous on April 9, 2008, 23:46
Hi I recently bought my first MR2 02 roadster but after a day of owning it the aerial fell off! I now have a new aerial including whip (that's what I think the white bit is called) can any tell me how to fit it, how easy it is or should I just pay someone else to do it? How long would it take a mechanic? Also are their any meets on the Wirral, the closest I have found is North Wales. Thanks for your help

Hi and Welcome.

The short answer is yes, you can do this yourself.

the longer answer is - depends on what you mean by "fell off". Even if the nylon whip had snapped in the mechanism, the aerial would just not work properly. If its fallen off I think you must've lost the chromed top mounting nut that holds the telescopic part in place?

If you have a full assembly ready to go, its a half-hour job. If you need to graft the new whip into the old aerial body, its 5 minutes .... plus about an hour to remove and dismantle the old body to retrieve any bits of broken whip. Very dirty job!

If you've still got the bit that fell off, that should tell you whether its going to be quick or dirty  s:wink:  s:wink:

Soz I didn't reply earlier matey - IT gremlins!

s:shock:  s:shock:  Odd that your aerial has detached as you still have the chrome collar (on the car) that should hold everything together   s:? :? s:?

If you're sure that all of the old aerial and whip is out, then unscrew the collar, feed in the new whip (it'll feed itself with power-down on the stereo) and screw the collar over the top. Job done.

If you think you've still got remnants of the old aerial stuck in there somewhere, its jack up, wheel off, arch liner off, remove the assembly, strip & remove remnants, wash hands and anything you've touched!!, reassemble, wash hands again, feed whip, screw collar etc etc .

Or, if you wanna hoof up the M56 you're welcome to pop in over the weekend and we can sort it for you.  s:wink:  s:wink:

No worries im in no rush and your advice is worth the wait.I think that the aerial had been bent/snapped at some time and has teared off when the aerial came up.I think that it all the whip has come out and if it hasn't that offer might be getting cashed in!Cheers for the help
