Title: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2004, 10:11
After 3 and a half years of happy Roadster ownership, I'm *that* close to waving goodbye to it. As much as I love driving it, there comes a time when you miss the space, rear seats and interior gadgets, plus it's starting to show it's age a bit (just scuffs and rattles, nothing serious).

So, I'm currently in mid-negotiation on a year-old Seat Leon Cupra R. What a totally different car though; rocket-ship power (once the turbo's spooled up; real punch in the back stuff), break-neck brakes (and I thought the Roadster's were good!), and most importantly, a boot and rear seats (although only two small ones, as it has the optional Recaro's).

Unless anyone makes me a killer offer on my Roadster (2000W, Lagoon Blue, 32k, AC+Leather) in the next few hours, I'm not looking to sell it privately; yes, I'm being screwed on the trade-in, but I want it gone with no overlap hassles (it being our only car).

[edited to remove for sale parts]

I'll be sorry to see her go...  s:cry:  s:cry:    s:cry:  s:cry:

Tis a sad day...

I tried the Cupra R and thought it was OK but not as much fun as the '2. Would deaf think about one if i went back to a 'normal' car though.

You have PM!  I'm interested in your Cusco...  s:D :D s:D

Sorry to hear you're parting with it.. I've been thinking about doing just that recently too, as mine is sounding very ill at the mo, and looking a little scruffy! (2000 X, 47k..)

But it'll be the summer again in a couple of months, so I'm sure my enthusiasm will be restored!

I've tried very hard to make sure I'm not just suffering "winter blues", but went touring Seat dealers yesterday topless, so I'm sure it's not that. The other factors just add up.

Quote from: "krisclarkuk"I tried the Cupra R and thought it was OK but not as much fun as the '2

Obviously not as "chuckable", no, and a totally different driving experience. It's difficult to compare the two really, as they're a different class of car. In it's class though, I think the LCR is pretty good; not as manic as a Civic Type R, handles better than a Focus RS, and at the end of the day, stonking value for what you get.

I know how you feel.  I'm lucky enough that we have a leon cupra and a '2, and I'm sat here looking at the snow outside thinking, I have to drive to London at 5am tomorrow, and I have no chance of using the Leon  s:? :? s:?
.... and hindsight tells me that the (non-turbo) impreza I looked at before buying my first '2 may just have been a good idea  s:roll:  s:roll:
Oh well, back on the train again, I must be pretty close to Craig's low mileage record now (~700 since 28 Nov last year  s:oops:  s:oops:   )

Well, that's it. The Roadster has gone  s:cry:  s:cry:   s:cry:  s:cry:   s:cry:  s:cry:

Hopefully the new owner of W701 JCG will appear here soon (the windscreen sticker is still in, and a big stack of flyers in the glovebox), and have as much fun in it as I had.

I probably won't be around here that often now, so if anyone wants me for anything, PM me (and I'll get an email alert).

Thanks all for some great (and sometimes challenging!) times here, and maybe I'll gatecrash some meets sometime...

Farewell, you will be back soon, anouncing your brand new roadster!.

The cupra r is one we are looking at, but when we opened the garage door the other day, there she was, that lovely blue 2.

We cant bring ourselves to trade in the two cars for one...nothing is as good as the 2, and the focus will always be our shopping trolly.

I didn't get that - it was part-ex'd; that's what it's on the forecourt at.

Still surprised me though! Oh, and it doesn't have a year's warranty left, don't know where they got that from (unless they've extended it).

It looks fantastic with the lowering springs! I haven't seen a proper photo of one that's been lowered and in the best colour yet.   s8) 8) s8)

The reduced gap at the top of the wheel arches makes all the difference... My next purchase I think!

Sadly so am I.  I love the car but I have a lengthy commute (half city, half motorway), a need to tow and carry tools/wheels/etc as I plan to use the Westfield more this year.  I'm gonna do one more trackday with the Mr2 (Anglesey) then that's it for track usage.

I'll run it for this summer then sell it August.  It'll be swapped for a Freelander if I can talk my dad into selling it to me.  Otherwise I'll stretch my budget a bit and got for a Lexus IS200 Sport or that escort sixed Merc.

Basically, I think I just got old.

After about 30 years of owning/driving MR2s I have reluctantly decided to change manufacturer. It was either that or keep using my 3rd Roadster. In the last 3 years
absolutely nothing has gone wrong with  "my baby" (10 years old in May). If anyone wants to know how to put a cycle rack on the back get in touch.

I have just collected an Audi TTS Roadster Quattro in Sprint Blue Pearl. I am expecting some great fun with this, as it's twice the power of the MR2.

Slacey
I've just re-read your report following out Paris trip to collect the Style-bar hoops from David. That certainly was a memorable week-end (especially your Redbull and
paracetamol!!!!!)

Don't be fooled into thinking an over assisted servo means better brakes. I highly doubt a Leon would stop as quickly as an MR2 unless maybe it had slicks on a hot day.

Only time will tell LOL.  A 4x2 compared with a Quattro. Mmmmm. When it came out the pundits compared it very favourably with the Porsche Cayman. However, I have not driven that car.
For my 70th birthday I have been given 2 Supercar track-days. 5 cars and a high-speed lap on one and 4 cars + high-speed lap for the other. As there are 9 cars available I should have a couple of magical days. The events are run on a proper track, not airfields with cones. Unfortunately I won't be able to give my own car a blast. In 2004 I did a days sprinting at Curborough near Lichfield in my first Mk3 and it would be good to find out how the TTS compares. It is very cheap and great fun.

Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: shnazzle on January 20, 2016, 10:03
I can confirm that the steering in VAG cars is rather dull, unless you start getting into the RS range where it is massively improved.

As for sheer cornering ability... I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

What I will say is that, particularly with the engine you're looking at, you NEED to get it mapped.
Audi stock maps are downright shocking. As are VW. The only ones that got it right are SEAT and Skoda. Get the car, spend another 400 on a good map, and power delivery will be infinitely better. The extra power is a bonus.

I would hope that for the asking price a TTS would be absolutely spot on.
Why are the maps bad?
Emmissions fuel economy?

I honestly don't know. Longevity maybe? But the throttle response is dreadful, truely. It's actually easier in the diesels to get it to be in the sweet spot than in the petrols. Might explain why the CR170 diesel version of the TTs were popular.

I felt this in an S3,RS5,A4 2.0 and was told by an RS3 driver that that was the same. The odd thing is... The RS5 was naturally aspirated! Put it this way, I was happy to get back into our 3.0 diesel. Minus the handling of the RS5 which is infinitely better.

After the S3 drive, I was very pleased to get back in the Leon CupraR we had at the time, despite it having 30 less BHP. The Leon wanted to go, it was responsive, sporty and eager to rev its little 2.0 turbo.
The S3 was happier in lower revs, but made it damn near impossible to heel-toe into a corner and blast out. Coming out of was like watching the clock waiting for the map to increase the boost!

Just had my new 3 year licence in the post this morning. As I have mild glaucoma DVLA wanted me to have a field test. I scored 99.9%, which isn't bad.

Yesterday on the motorway in 6th gear at 75 mph the response was instant and as it was still pulling hard at over 100 I decided to back off before DVLA want my licence back LOL. BTW I think it is still in comfort mode. I haven't yet read through all the owner's manuals before playing with the set-up.
Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: shnazzle on January 20, 2016, 12:07
You mean that motorway in Germany where you were yesterday?  s;) ;) s;)

The different modes just change the noise and the gear shifts really. Not much of a difference in engine if you ask me.
Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: RogerH on January 20, 2016, 18:52
Yeah, that was the one LOL

Sport mode on the other half's Skoda Fabia VRS makes a MASSIVE difference, as it goes ballistic LOL. I'm hoping that something similar will happen with the TTS,
but I will certainly have fun finding out lol. This is why I'm considering going back to Curborough.
Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: Jrichards20 on January 20, 2016, 21:15
I think the biggest change is in the management of the gearbox. Keeps it much higher in the rev range, quicker shifts and improved response.
Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: shnazzle on January 20, 2016, 21:17
Yup. But it does definitely give the impression of being faster and more aggressive so really it does what it says on the tin.
The biggest noticeable change to me is the steering. Much heavier in Sport
Title: Re: Goodbye Roadster?
Post by: mrzwei on January 20, 2016, 21:50
The sport mode on my  Saab auto is awesome to the point that you can watch the petrol gauge moving rapidly to the left as you drive. 'Real time' info I think they call it   s:lol:  s:lol:
All it really does is hold the gear to higher revs before it shifts.
Much better with the SMT when you decided when to shift but that's what you do with a manual anyway.

I was starting to feel like I was whinging about Audis. Let me just be clear that I'm a huge Audi fan-boy haha! My dream car (aside from the 2 of course) is still a fully loaded carbon pack Audi RS6.

I bet the tt is a real hoot, and the quattro makes such a huge difference coming out of corners. That coupled with a (remapped) beautiful and proven engine+turbo combination... Can't go wrong really. Bullet proof.
Keep it well-maintained and you'll find that most of the time it actually produces more power than specified.

Keep an eye out for the PCV valve, tend to leak and lose boost. The high pressure pump has a cam follower, a little metal cup. This cup wears and can cause massive engine failure. Just replace it with every big service. Costs nothing and takes 10 minutes to replace.
Use good plugs, the TFSI engines are dirty buggers. They may use oil, don't be alarmed. This is much less on the 2012+.
The diverter valves may rupture, depending on the version you have. Revision D or G are the ones you want. Both are good to well over 450ish hp worth boost. No need for fancy aftermarket.
I'm a huge fan of the VAG CDL-based blocks. Especially couplrd with that lovely k04 turbo.

Enjoy! Vids welcome  s:) :) s:)
