I've a GPS Rider (global positioning system)
This is an amazing little device imho. You don't need to have it on the dash, i keep mine under the dash console.Dosn't pick up aircraft signals like some and give false warnings. If theres a camara the Rider certainly does it's job.
Even with your music pumped up at night it has a blue led light which lights up the cockpit to warn you if nearing a speed zone or where mobile camaras/radar are probable.
Also if you are overspeeding=not that i ever do...it will give you a polite reminder, which can be muted if you like s:P :P s:P

TomTom 6 on my xda with full European maps and all cameras.
Easy, and works.
Can even be run in the background without showing the maps so it looks like a normal phone to the Gendarmes.

In these days of Satnav's with camera warnings is there still a market for the stand alone camera detector? I know I can get camera warnings on my Copilot on my phone, I just haven't been arsed to do so. Wish I had last june like when I get snapped bombing through Kent s:-( :-( s:-(

I think so Phil, sat navs i know of dont light up like these little devices so if you've go the music on overpowering the sat nav sound you miss any warnings.
If in my case i see the blue led on bright, i know in good time. Also you only really need to use the sat nav if your in an area you don't know?

If you know the area wouldn't you know the speed cameras too and therefore not need one? Anyway don't speed it's against the law!

Not nessesarily...if i venture a different way, besides it would be a pain to have to think of camara's all of the time. Thats the point of these imo, they do the job for you.I never ss ssspeed Phil-(oops! my stutters back s:D :D s:D )

The Rider i have picks up the mobile camara's or there designated areas...my friend got a ticket and we could'nt pinpoint the exact spot caught, until we drove down that stretch of road useung the Rider... detected the exact spot where they have the mobile from time to time.
Whos saying they are illegal to use? The data's pretty much the same as a sat nav so how could they be?
I dont think it was ever made illegal.. but what they were thining about banning is the use of radar/laser detectors.. not GPS based systems.

The lazer ones ar'nt good i found, i had a Japanese 'Super Cat' solar powered detecter for a time. The problem with these there so sensitive to aircraft and other camara's, after a while of constant beeping i had to switch mine off.
4-bands Solar Radar Detector (01/12/2005)
Specifications: * Mounted with a solar battery: Automatically charging from the solar panel to the built-in nickel-cadmium battery. * Windshield & visor mount * Compatible with 4-bands including X, K, New-Kand Ku bands: Not only the X-band, but the model W-8889 is also compatible with the K-band, new K band and Ku bands so as to be compatible with various radar speed traps. * Provision with the Auto Alarm Cut (AAC) system: The built-in oscillation sensor shuts off unwanted alarming sound generated while halting the vehicle or driving it at a low speed. * Auto Power Off function: When non-oscillation condition lasts for about 3 minutes, the power supply source is automatically shut off until the sensor detects a next oscillation, thus saving unwanted consumption of the battery voltage.
There never has been a plan to make GPS based systems illegal. The Government and Police hanged themselves on this point when they started arguing that Speed Cameras were only ever placed in accident blackspots rather than being money grabbing devices. Well surely if someone is selling a device that identifies accident blackspots to drivers causing them to slow down then that has to be a good thing doesn't it s:lol:  s:lol: Counter that argument then!
Not yet illegal to use a laser/radar detector although there have been plans to make it so for some time (Road Safety Bill). The logic here is in regard to mobile cameras. If you approach one of those so called "accident black spots" and you know there is not a mobile camera present, then you wouldn't slow down so you are creating a potential hazard.
What is illegal already is a jammer. This is a direct attempt to interfere with the police in detecting a crime and as such is perverting the course of justice. Successful prosecutions have already occurred in this area.

The worst people are those who actually drive at 5mph below the speed limit to ensure they don't go over. They just slow everyone down way too much, especially when it's just to prove a point.

To be honest, all joking aside.. I stick to the speed limit like glue - when safe driving conditions prevail.
However, I belive that fast driving does not mean dangerous driving. When in Germany I constantly drove at the max speed my hire could (130-140mph) on the de restricted motorways. This did not feel in any way dangerous. AND the Germans had cameras to snap you if you were tailgaiting.. surely THIS is a decent safety feature - although it has to be pretty inteligently programmed.

True, but it's a tricky one, interesting to see what the fatality rate is on the autobans in Germany though...A scarey thought letting GB drivers loose at those kind of speed limits. GB practical tests would definatly need to be upped imo. The Finish learn from a very early age how to handle a vehichle properly-like a pro rally driver would and is all part of their driving lessons.
Really depends who's behind the wheel and how competant that driver is, not how competant they think they are.

Yep, I meant radar detectors. It can't be made illegal for GPS systems - it's no different to buying a map with them indicated, or telling a friend where one is.
I did read that apparently the mobile ones don't need to be as well marked as the used to - I've seen a picture of a policeman in the back of a horse box with a speed gun!
The best detector is a passenger shouting 'CAMERAAAAAAAA!!!' s:D :D s:D
Whilst GPS units are good, you tend to rely on them and when they have not been updated you get caught out. Speeding on the motorway is like being a sitting duck. Too many times have I seen people getting booked in the hard shoulder by unmarked 5Series BMW's etc. B roads are a different kettle of fish. If I know the road well and know there are no junctions, sideroads, footpaths, residential areas, speed bumps, cameras, surprises etc I do tend to give my right foot a rest and leave it on the floor s:wink:  s:wink:

Looks cool but dam it's expensive to update.
I remember seeing one that had a button that if you saw a camera location it didn't know you press it and it would upload it to the main database. Can't find it now
I use the original cyclops unit which has that function. Audible and visual alarm with a GPS speedo built in too.
i'd agree people tend to rely on detectors
living in county durham i just never expect to see a camera
but on friday i passed 3 mobile traps in durham centre within
about half an hour (all different vehicles, not the same one moving from place to place)
Quote from: "Cj"So what GPS have you got? s:) :) s:)
TomTom One, loaded with speed camera maps.
Plus* Easy to use.
* Loud, audible warning tones plus clearly marked icons on the screen showing location
* Covers know mobile camera placements
Minus* Needs regular updating
* Bleeps every 20 secs on part of the M25
* Mobile cameras can be anywhere, so are not all known
Would recommend downloading the maps if you already have a TomTom.
Regards,
Stu

Ive got a Microfuzion Express, they are very cheap on ebay and they do work very well and also have a 0-60 test built in s:D :D s:D
I know this is an old thread, but this might interest someone.... the wife's got one of those iPhone things, and installed a free GPS speed camera program on it. We didn't really think it'd be much cop - but having tried it over the weekend on a run from Brighton to Sheffield, it warned about every single camera (speed and traffic light - even roadwork temporary ones), with speed limit, distance to camera countdown and warnings about your current speed (which of course, no one would need, 'coz no-one would speed).
Pulls the camera locations off the net as it goes along, so it's continually up-to-date.
Perfect, and free (if you already have an iPhone, no reason not to install it).
