Title: Ethernet socket from Sony Head Unit
Post by: Gleeman on February 15, 2009, 13:12
Yesterday I found a cable coming from the back of my standard 2000 model sony head unit.  The socket looked like an ethernet (rj45) socket.

Any idea what this is?

It's not a molex connector.

I wonder if it's some phone interface.  I'll try and post a photo up.

Might be RJ-45, doesn't mean it has to be ethernet!
Could be for anything from a CD Changer, Phone Kit, to a hair dryer.
RTFM comes to mind, i'd do a Google for the head unit manuals and see what i find.

Nic
Unlikely to be RH4, maybe RJ11 or RJ12 but they are smaller.

Hi,

On a thread from the past, loadswine very helpfully posted up this pic of the rear of the stock pre-facelift Sony unit:

Which socket do you mean?  I'm guessing the one to the left of the blue remote control socket?  If so, I *think* thats the CD changer/minidisc changer input..?

Cheers,

Nothing even resembling RJ45

I'd confirm again that the "in" by the blue remote is the CD Multichanger lead.

I've had a closer look at where the cable is going.

The molex from the head unit is going to a small 'unit' underneath the dash (above the clutch).  This has what looks like a DC power cable coming from it, but I can't really tell (couldn't twist my head enough).  The unit is about 10 cm x 1 cm x 6 cm and is like a trapezoid prism.  I think it's red.

From this unit comes the cable I first mentioned, which terminates in an RJ45/8P8C socket. ( m http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8P8C (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8P8C) m )

Anyone seen anything similar.  My best guess is an ipod or phone controller.  I'm hoping it's an ipod controller and somehow I can use it.

Hi,

Sounds to me like a mobile phone kit....

Should be another wire from the box to a separate speaker assuming it's still there..no ariel lead to the box suggests Bluetooth.......Hey, but what do I know!!
