Title: Mici's Spyder (JDL kit, this and that) *new pics pg.3*
Post by: Mici on May 7, 2009, 07:56
I bought the car abused late last year. It had seen knife through the tarpaulin, smashed windows and ofcourse scratched all over the car. All in all, it was in driveable but poor visual condition.

Thanks to this forum and E-bay, I got some parts used and ended up with a car which I think looks pretty much "allright".  s:) :) s:)

I'll update this with a bit more story later on... Here are the pics:

Those were the most work to get fit right.  s:( :( s:(

There are more pics of it here, even shows how I had to cut the rear bumper to make it fit properly. The password is "spyder".

Well that's strange...as I've test fitted the rear already and it fits easily enough (except I've yet to drill the screw holes etc). Very odd!

Mici - that is GORGEOUS!!! I've always liked the look of the JDL kit, but that paint and the wheels makes it fabulous! And you saved yet another '2 from the scrapper! Lots of hard work and a great result - well done!

Thanks guys.  s:) :) s:)  The car was bought to replace my GF's old SW20, which I did a huge job restoring it on just about everything. Yet, I did not feel the passion to keep it any longer and my eyes caught this Spyder. After all, the difference in money between SW an ZZ was not huge, the car got 10 years younger and this one has only done 32k km's. That plus the huge difference in being true roadster (vs. T-bar) and go-kart-like driveability.   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:   That ofcourse you all already knew but was new to me after my TT Roadster being ~500kg heavier.  s:) :) s:)  The TT is just enough bigger for me being comfy for longer journeys as the Spyder is really toight fit for me being 190cm.

I need to thank guys here on this very forum, who did supply me with 2nd hand parts for a fraction of the price that new ones would've cost here in Finland. Thanks!   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:

I need to finish the audio installation to get some pics of that. It is working and sounds ok, but still needs some finishing touches to be worth showing.  s;) ;) s;)  Also I'm currently working on getting my D2 coilovers installed. It was low enough, if not too low, but I got the D2's for fair price and couldn't resist the adjustability.

The colour is Lamborghini Arancio Atlas btw. Me and my GF both saw this in orange in our eyes right from the moment we saw the car. It looks even better in real life. I had to spray our Boblbee backpack first to see the colour in bigger part than paint chip but after that there was no question it was the colour.

Perfect car for being a shop trolley for missus.  s:D :D s:D  Can't grab the whole supermarket with her on this car.   s:lol:  s:lol:

I think I'll tag around for a while now.  s;) ;) s;)

Yeah, well as they are GF, the quality often tends to vary a bit. The top part that which comes between the tail lights, was twisted so that I really had to force it to get it on where it should be. I could have left it like that but since I've worked my way around FG bumpers many times, I knew it wouldn't last forever and eventually crack somewhere. Also, when the bumper was bolted on to car properly, the sides were like ½-1" too long and didn't line up with the rear lights properly. Again, it could've been bolted on like that but since I have some sort of perfection-sickness, I had to fix it because it would've bugged me in the future. Due to the limited amount of time I had to work on this car, I had to extend my tolerance of error from 1mm to 2mm.   s:oops:  s:oops:  So it is not 110% perfect but the flaws are just something I see in my eyes when I walk past the car. Nobody else has pointed them out to me so far.

The rear bumper now fits without heavily forcing it on installation and that is the most important thing to me.

Sideskirts were also a number on their own. The part that comes from the door opening to the rear wheel arch was sticking out. Nothing that proper fastening and urethaneglue wouldn't fix tho. I didn't want to mold the sides properly to the rear fenders because I actually like how the edge opens up towards the rear bumper.

I'll get some more photos when I get it all finished up and find a proper scenery to photoshoot it.  s;) ;) s;)

To be honest, I hate body kits and aftermarket styling. I think it looks cheap. Fine if your 17 and its your first car but not on a roadster. Then I saw this and changed my mind. Looks lovely!

That is very true. I want to get one eventually, at least if we have to drive the car around the year. Which I hope is not the deal as I could imagine this being a bit dangerous car on slippery ice and snow conditions.  s:( :( s:(  Anyone want to send a HT to Finland?   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

s:D :D s:D   I guess the rats have also taken the same poison as the car.   s:lol:  s:lol:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I've in process of finishing the car up, there are still some minor things I want to get sorted before I can call it "done". After that I will take some better pics and post them here too.

The car really seems to be an attention grabber - peoples heads turn 360 degrees when we drive around the city.  s:lol:  s:lol:  Dunno if it's the color, the kit or just the combination of all...  I just wish the performance would meet the appearance a bit better. I'm fairly happy with our little ride however, it runs pretty smooth (apart from rock stiff D2 suspension) and it is fun to drive. Overtaking would be easier and safer if it would have the extra 50 hp or something like that. My arse just has gotten too used to the 270hp I have on my TTR. Comparing these cars however is a bit difficult. The Audi is a lot more comfy, even with its 19" rubber it is softer and offers the power if needed. Weighs 500kg more tho so you will definately notice that immediately when driving it. I'm happy to have them both - we just need to get something done to MR2 in power wise at some point. I think. The woman who drives it says it is un-necessary but who would you listen to?  s:lol:  s:lol:

Aight, back to work, getting it finalized and shooting photos for you guys.  s:) :) s:)

Yeah, I've been staring one that I have on my TT's trunk lid. That could be pretty close match to start with to get it fit on the top of the rear bumper. I was actually just trying to find one cheap a week ago on TT-Forums but it appears to have some server problem at the moment. Time will tell if I get one in my hands.

However, the car was awarded last saturday on a trackday. Not for a fastest lap or best performance but just looking pretty among the parked cars on the car lot.  s:) :) s:)  I guess I have to be happy on that - even though it wasn't a "real" show event this time.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!  s:) :) s:)  I'll upload some new pics of it soon.

I think the alloys were InterAlloy 17". They came with the car when we bought it, but since the silver didn't match the car I painted the inner part of them with same Yamaha "Dark Smoke" color as the openings on both bumpers. Looks damn lot neater that way if I may say.  s:) :) s:)

Yes, Artec Turbo P 3-piece wheels in 9x19" front and 10x19" rears. I have adapters between wheel hub and rim to convert them from Porsche lug pattern to Audis. I really love the wheels also, I guess they were the biggest reason for me to want just this car out of all TT's for sale. Also it had some bits done already so that made my decision easier. Small warning tho, I've already gone through one differential because of the size difference in tires. I had 245/35 front and 265/30 rear - which was 13mm difference in the actual height of the wheel. That makes several cm's in rolling radius, something that is NOT healthy when the car is 4wd, even if it is with haldex coupling.

I've installed those SRS-Tec bumpers myself, the carbon ribs on them are home brew and the colour is standard Nimbusgrau with added spice under the clear coat (Mipa Phönix sparkling effect). The lovely thing about this is that the flake doesn't show at all when its dark or when looking at the car from shadow side.

Thanks!  s:) :) s:)  Yeah, it is lowered, I have D2 coilovers and its so low that I've already scrubbed that front bumper few times.  s:oops:  s:oops:  I even got softer spring ratios when I bought the kit but it is still really hard ride. Those original struts with lowering springs (which were on the car when bought) were a lot nicer ride so I'm actually bouncing around   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:   with the idea of getting them back in the car or not.

The good thing about D2 suspension being so tight, you do get all of the go-cart feeling when the suspension doesn't flex too much around the bends. Downside of this again is that the rear sometimes gets loose and the car doesn't have the power to drift with spectacular tire smoke around the corners.  s:lol:  s:lol:  Also this is SMT equipped so that makes it a tad more complicated too...

thats cool. did you buy the car with that JDL kit on?

if you went from stock to JDL... is the JDL physically lower body wise compared to stock? I've got the TTE springs and want this kit at somepoint but... i'm wondering how its going to be getting in/out of my driveway   s:lol:  s:lol:
Title: Re: Mici's Spyder (JDL kit with a bit of this and that)
Post by: Mici on August 26, 2009, 16:45
Yeah, the car was bone stock minus the lowering springs and 17" wheels it still has. I would say that yes it is a bit lower and also comes a tad further forward from the front wheel. I would think that you could live with one if you just think about how you drive it. I ordered this front spoiler/splitter under the front bumper to use with my car but that is totally useless. Maybe for show purposes but I really couldn't get far with it installed on the car.

Few new pics from last weekend show. This was our season closing for 2009. I have no plans yet for attending any shows 2010 but time will tell.  s:) :) s:)

one of the coolest cars i've ever seen. kinda understated with no spoiler but the colour and kit looks so fresh. a top combination, top marks from me!

Oh and I'm not driving the car through the winter, it's just been spending some time outside.

I uploaded a bunch of pics from early this year (you can spot some snow in the pics, it's chilly, but not that cold in Finland yet), if someone wants to go and have a look. You may have seen some of them in MR2 Only mag too.  s;) ;) s;)

There are some pics of the ICE install too, just a basic setup, nothing special.

The car will be going to one major car show in Finland in few weeks and I have to do something to earn the right to bring it there, gotta have something new.  s;) ;) s;)  I will spoil it with Audi TT spoiler and possibly some goodies wrapped in CF. The real one, not vinyl. To be honest, I'm kinda limited with ideas what to add on that car. TTE turbo kit would be great but seems like nobody is selling those these days, or the price is just too much for me right now.

Thanks guys!  s:) :) s:)

The car was in a car show last weekend. I finally had some interior parts wrapped in CF and we decided to go wild with the vinyl for the show. Don't know if those spyders are going to stay or not tho. At least the car gathered a good crowd taking pics of it, so obviously it is confusing enough.   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

!!! If you are going to browse through the whole gallery, please keep in mind that there might be partial nudity involved in some pics. Well, I don't know if they are forbidden or not, there are pics of a girl who has her body painted and not wearing a lot more than paint...

Anyways, to the pics.

I think these were a C1 product. I'm not sure if they are still available or not, you could check out our for sale forum at times. Thats where I got mine from and I've seen a few going there later too.  s;) ;) s;)
