Title: Getting an ipod connection?
Post by: lost&found on June 30, 2009, 23:31
Ive got an 06 mr2 and i was wondering if there was a way to get an ipod/mp3 connection from the standard stereo (just like a standard jack or something...). i dont really know anything about stereos, so im hoping it would be a cheap and easy thing to do.
can anyone help?
thanks.

I don't know if your model has a tape deck but a cheap easy way is to get a tape adapter, I've used one in mine for years and if you have the in line remote you can change tracks, adjust volume etc  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:wink:  s:wink:

I've just fitted an IO connect with reasonable results.

I had a world of pain, but with hindsight it should be a doddle (ie I could do it again in half an hour). £30 off Amazon plus a £10 cable.
I had to do a small cable mod to the IO connect but again this was very easy for anyone with a knife, a wiring connector block (£1 from the corner shop) and a small screwdriver.
IO Play looks a better solution tho - that adds Bluetooth and a controller to skip tracks.

I can write it up properly if you are interested.

Otherwise there are units which attach to the CD changer socket.

I wanted a subtle install that wasn't apparent and I could leave the roof off without fretting so I went for this:

IO Connect:
 m http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... dition=new (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B001TEI3K0/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1246477519&sr=8-1&condition=new) m
T Harness (IO Connect interrupts head unit like a hands free):
 m http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/lcca/4 ... id/9831360 (http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/lcca/4148/mia/d/connects2+ct10ty02+toyota+land+cruiser+2003+t+harness/pid/9831360) m
LCA were really good when I cocked up and bought the wrong wire because my car has an earlier loom.
I think Nips on this forum can get them cheaper.

You can reach around the head unit from the footwell and unplug the cables then plug in the T Harness.
The IO loom needs to be modified, detailed below.
I pushed the loom up under the dash and into the back of the glovebox, where I sat the amp. You can drop the connector cable back down, and pull it under the head unit. Hide the cables under the bit of carpet velcro'd together under the HU.

I wired up a socket into the blank switch by the steering wheel. Toyota part number was 55539-32010-c0 - Switch Blanking Plate. Cost about £3.
I drilled the switch (v soft plastic!) and counter sunk it to fit the aux socket as it had a shallow thread.

Tbh wish I hadn't bothered, just use the cable with the plug and leave it coiled under the head unit when not in use.

IO Loom mod is easy - because the car only has 2 speakers you sever the rears. cut 4 wires and join 2 sets of ends, terminate the others.

"In order to rectify this, you will need to close the open circuited channels, this can either be done by purchasing part number SOT-iO2S as a plug and play component, alternatively, if you feel confident enough to do so, you can adapt the iO harness directly. If you feel that this is something you could achieve, the please do the following;

1. Go to the iO harness ISO socket which accepts the vehicles plugs (not the iO's ISO plugs that go to the stereo).
2. You will see that the vehicle has no wires opposite the 2 outer pairs of speaker wires (GREEN, GREEN/BLACK, PURPLE & PURPLE/BLACK)
3. Locate the GREEN and the GREEN/BLACK wires on the speaker socket and cut these directly at the back of the ISO socket.
4. Bare the ends of these wires and bridge them together, either by solder and shield, through bullet connections or via a Butt connector.
5. Locate the PURPLE and the PURPLE/BLACK wires on the speaker socket and again, cut these directly at the back of the ISO socket.
6. Bare the ends of these wires and bridge them together, either by solder and shield, through bullet connections or via a Butt connector.''

I used a terminal strip to join the ends and also to terminate the wires rather than cutting close to the plug. This means I can wire in rears at a later date.

I had a nightmare with this because my car had the wrong wires. I honestly reckon you could fit the lot yourself in half an hour for £50.
All my difficulties were home made.
The sound is pretty good. Only niggle I have now is lack of control over the HU - Time again i'd probably go for the IO Play instead. As it stands i'm looking at a Kensington LiquidAux Deluxe so I can have a remote control on the steering wheel.

In all honesty, look at the FAQ and swap the Head Unit   s:lol:  s:lol:

I bought a Griffin RoadTrip DC last night to run on to the IO Connect.

Roadtrip disables volume control and sends line level output, which is nice. IO Connect has no volume control.
So all music comes out in wonderfully clear high fidelity FULL BLOODY VOLUME.

Inline volume control now ordered.

IO Connect is utter false economy. Buy IO Play instead.

thanks for the replies. the io play looks pretty good. do u know if it will work straight away with the stock stereo, or will i need to get some sort of adapters?
iv had a little look on ebay and they seem to go for around £75. do u reckon its worth paying £145 at halfords (theyll install it for free), bearing in mind iv not changed any stereo stuff before?
cheers.

You need the adaptor cable I mentioned above. As I say, you can install it without a dismantling the interior at all. The harness plugs together.
You either need an adaptor harness for the 2speaker MR2 or to amend the harness yourself as above.

Cost of harnesses etc is under £20 which makes the install poor value imo.

Ebay price is silly high - I found them on a couple of sites at £65 ish.

If you can find a CD changer adaptor at a decent price, I'd be tempted tbh
