Title: Possible explanation for dodgy handbrake
Post by: Anonymous on February 12, 2004, 19:42
Reading around today and it was suggested that the dodgy handbrake we get could be caused by good old fashioned heating and cooling.  The suggestion was that when you park up and put the handbrake on, chances are the brake discs are nice and warm.  You then put the handbrake on.  Over a few hours they cool, contracting and so getting smaller, and so the handbrake effect is much less.

Obviously applies to most disc rears.  And makes sense to me (even if it is incorrect).

The handbrake is pretty poor even if you apply it to cool discs. Or try to stop the car with it...the discs surely won't cool off when you apply the brake while moving  s;) ;) s;)

Drum brakes are great for locking wheels and make a great handbrake. But discs are great at slowing down without locking (obviously they do lock with enough force as well). The only way to get best of both is to have a drum for handbrake inside the disc like some do. But then the downside is more weight, so thank God they didn't do that to our lil sportscar  s8) 8) s8)

and I thought my mechs solved it by tightening the handbrake wire... It was just bad from the factory, i had to pull it all the way up to get it to work...
