Title: Black Bob Jnr
Post by: OlberJ on August 22, 2009, 17:15
Couldn't see a member's car forum so i'll put this in here for now.

Purchased this, not too unfamiliar, Mk1 yesterday. Will be picking it up next week.

It was 5 miles away and the engine's on it's way out. So we had to go for it.

Got some work to do on the Mk1V6 1st and that's probably gonna end up for sale soon but as soon as am sorted with that i'll be doing the following :

1MZ V6 all alloy engine with some headwork and a rebuild with full detail.
Mk2 N/A gearbox with Celica ST182 Final Drive and Mk3 LSD.
Fidanza flywheel.
Hybrid cltuch.
Apexi Induction kit.
16" Azevs and sticky tyres.
Slightly lower springs.
Fezza 355 exhaust if i can find one cheap enough.
And a spoiler of sorts.

Then it's a toss up between either a low blow SC setup that Paul's bringing out soon or some throttle bodies. That'll be stage 2 though.

Will document the full thing on here and TwoBrutal but seeing as we've just completed 3 of the same swaps it should fly in as long as i've got time to work on it.   s:D :D s:D

Your turning it into a door stop! Ohh dear :p

As for the wheels I like, are the azev A's? or something like that, remind me of wheels I nearly bought for my vdub, and if im guessing rightly, you probably bought them from styledynamix  s:P :P s:P

edit I may be wrong but they do look sim :p

Think i'll do a little lowering and leave it at that style-wise till the conversion is done.

Roll on a fortnight on Monday and i can get stuck in to it.

Finally getting to go down and pick the car up 2moro.

Got my unit sorted too so the conversion will begin in ernest from next week.   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Still have to buy a gearbox, an exhaust, a flywheel, a clutch kit, an engine, some gear cables and selector, some lowering springs, some tyres, some paint, a spoiler...the list goes on!

Been spending all my time getting the unit sorted but it's nearly there.

The strippage of BBJ has begun...

And the TTE springs arrived. Tempted to fit them before i do the rest of the conversion just to see how it looks   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Got half an hour on it tonight, rear is now removed and stored safely in the overhead compartment.

Few things in the pipeline for this one, trick gearbox, trick exhaust and depending on how things pan out in the next fortnight, a trick sounding engine.   s:D :D s:D

Anybody after a 62K exhaust backbox? Going cheap. (Think there may be a budgie stuck in it)

Better go buy a flywheel too! Chromoly jobbie from the states methinks.

Indeed, recycling at work here.

Mk3 LSD and a celica ST182 final drive.   s:) :) s:)   It's a bit longer than the S54 FD so should even things out nicely for my sort of driving.

Impressive stuff olberj. Do you have all the equipment you need at your place or are you borrowing a lift etc? I'm gathering parts for a 2zz swap at the moment, do you reckon you're ever likely to have the time or even the slightest interest  s;) ;) s;)  in helping me out for a price? I'm planning on getting the engine/ecu/gearbox from the same donor and either getting the LSD off the stock gearbox or picking up an aftermarket model.

The bits I'm getting include custom fabricated manifold, wiring loom harness etc so it should all be ready to go with minimal fuss.

Some proper progress at last!

Engine is out :

Gonna get a good clean and paint once the cutting and welding is done.

Not sure if am doing this right, is the engine meant to come out of the Camry 1st?

And here's the exhaust am gonna be using, can you tell what it's off?

It's gonna have a couple of recesses cut in the bumper and sit a little higher but the angle this sits at is gonna be a challenge to make all 3 inlets work as they should. Yes, 3 inlets  s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Oh and the rarest thing on the planet, a rust free Mk3 subframe!

The gearbox is off the Mk3 and gonna be stripped down and LSD removed but i've already got another i picked up previously for the super duper Mk2 N/A box build.

I've started taking all the gubbins out the Mk3 aswell, chipped away half the bitumen soundproofing then realised i didn't have to,

If the weather's decent 2moro, the engine will be coming out ze camry.  s:) :) s:)

Haha, I actually didn't, should've done though! I've spent a fair bit of time following a 355 and recognised it, the pipes are quite small and tight together compared to most similar cars so they're somewhat recognisable if you've seen them before  s:) :) s:)

3.0 of V6 revvyness, Mk3 LSD, ST182 final drive, F1 Chromoly flywheel and an XTD 6 paddle clutch.  s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

The flywheel was a bit of a bastard, as it's made of chromoly it's helluva hard, anyone i spoke to about drilling it said no so i had to have it spark erroded. Kind of like plasma cutting except the finish is amazing, smooth as a u like.

All in the flywheel cost me £230 delivered from the states and modified, cheaper than the Fidanza but not quite as light.

Bay will be getting painted up 2moro, once i can find somewhere that sells 2k paint, and i've started work on the driver's side mount. Had a thunk about it and i'm gonna use Gary's idea of a removable mount, not really needed but want to give it a go.

Fingers crossed i'll have it hanging by the weekend  s:) :) s:)

Subframe has been modified to fit and the rear torque mount has been fabbed up too.

Title: Re: Black Bob Jnr
Post by: OlberJ on December 10, 2009, 17:28
Cheers lads.

I'm very tempted to go for the SC kit that Paul is producing, it should yield some nice results but nothing set in stone till i've had this on the road for a few months. ITB's i think i'm gonna save for the rally project on a Mk1 we're taking on next year. Although when i hear Limey's car running, that may change. Instantly   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Started work on the rear manifold today, read as "chopped the shit out of it". Got myself a stud extractor, hugely useful tool! So tomorrow i can buy the bends i'm after and get the exhaust all mocked up into place.

Unfortunately it's all going to have to come back out again when my heat shielding arrives but just have to get on with the fabrication work while i wait.

Itching to hear it run on that back box though.   s8) 8) s8)

olber cheers for your PM a while back, i know I haven't replied, just been trying to get my head round what is needed for the car.

i'm going to be getting a scrappage deal (hopefully) on a cheap runaround at the beginning of february if it's still running (i'm thinking hyundai i10). Then I can take the '2 off the road and finish gathering my bits. Still interested in what I was asking you about though!
Title: Re: Black Bob Jnr
Post by: OlberJ on December 11, 2009, 18:36
No problems Kool PT, just give me a shout when you're ready and we'll get you sorted out   s:D :D s:D

More metal work today  s:) :) s:)

made up the new rear exhaust manifold, forgot to get pictures of it but it's now pointing it's flange nicely where i want it and clearing the rear subframe.

Once that was all done i got cracking on the fitting of the backbox. Lots and lots of measuring, cable tie nudging and a little welding and it's all now in place ed zackery where i want it.

Once i've got hold of a couple of 2" flexis i can make up the separate downpoops and mate it up to the backbox. Little trimming of the valance and it's all there.
Title: Re: Black Bob Jnr
Post by: OlberJ on December 16, 2009, 19:53
Exhaust is now done, was a bit tight under there but it all goes together nicely, got the flexis in and it's higher than the sump/gearbox. Obviously it's not equal length but it never was gonna be with the tranny V6.

Engine cost is whichever Camry you choose, £1000-£1500 dependant on mileage really.
Gearbox i spent a small fortune on for an S54. £600 for the box, the LSD, final drive and labour.
Starter motor and slave cylinder - £40
Flywheel - £250 delivered and modded.
Hybrid Clutch - £150
Induction kit - £60
Exhaust and pipes - £150
Metal, paint, heat shielding, coolant pipes, Mk2 gear cable and custom shifter, custom engine mounts, etc etc. - £fair bit

I can do one for customers for £4500 for the 1MZ inc engine and all the bits to make it work.

Doing it yourself you'll probably spend ~£2500 in parts, plus any extras you want to add. It takes me 4 weeks working on it full time so it's not an easy swap. Definitely worthwhile though, as i'm sure Wills, Greg and Mike will agree.

To give you an idea of what this thing is like when you're on the move, i came home on the "big private road" tonight and sitting about 70 a guy in an STi WRX bug eye impreza pulled up beside me.

We both stuck our foot to the floor and by the time we were in triple figures plus twenty, the look on his face was pretty priceless.

Roof was down to so it felt like i was doing twice the speed, man i love this car.

Ach it's all subjective but comparing the 3VZ in the Mk1 to the 1MZ in the roadster, this just feels that bit more grunty. Could be a myriad of reasons for that though.

Get the S/C done asap!

Got a couple of the business logos made up for the car, just subtle things.

Think i might well use the same guy for the V6 on the back and i'm contemplating a sun strip. Don't want to go overboard with it though. Well, not till the spoiler arrives   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Nothing yet, i'm still mulling it over. I can't get away from the carbon wing look though!

Maybe not as tall as that but i just reckon if the width is correct that would look the business and actually give some downforce too.

Got a bit of work done on the car today.

When doing the springs the rear droplinks did their usual trick of rounding the alan key centre when trying to take them off. But they didn't do it straight away, oh no, they waited untill they had loosened a few turns, leaving them permanently locked slightly loose. Bastardo.

So after checking out the price of new rear droplinks, laughing a lot, i then decided i'd get some others and just make them fit. We do this on Mk2'#s with fiesta droplinks and they need cut and rewelded 180* but it's nothing hard to do. Then i remembered i had a set of random droplinks in the garage, so i dug them out and cut and welded them to fit.

Now the good bit, the droplinks were attached to a Mk2 turbo ARB. So i offered it up and whaddya know it only fecking fits. Needs the appropriate sized bushes to hold the ARB but it goes right on, correct width and doesn't even come near hitting anything.

Took the car out for a drive and it's transformed. Forgot to measure the standard ARB but the new one is 21mm. I picked it up for £15.

So anyone else after better rear end stability i'd strongly recommend it.   s:D :D s:D

The turn in is so much more positive.

Next up...custom under body bracing.

Only lost a bit seeing as it's been thrown straight in. Head work and some cam regrinds and leaning it out a bit should make a marked improvement.

Should have a little bit of time to myself this Saturday so i'm going to purchase some materials and make up some custom underbody bracing.

Angle Steel for the base plates i'll bolt through, as per other purchasable bracing, and then tie it all together with some tubing. Any advice on the diameter of tubing i should be using?

It'll be an x-brace under the main floor plan to begin with and then add to this as needed.

Hopefully notice a big difference going from no bracing on an early car.   s:D :D s:D

Still got it, still loving it.

Finally got a chance to sort the clutch. The 6 paddle friction plate i had in was a bit too much for everyday driving. Standard friction plate in there now and it's smooth as you like.

Tarted up the exhaust with some silver VHT paint and gave the sub frame a lick of paint too. It's looking brammer again.   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Have gone for one of Paulm's full underbody bracings, looking forward to getting that fitted. Still not got the tyres yet but Marangoni Zeta Lineas are on the list. Might get some smaller wheels 1st though.

The spoiler is sitting painted but i had some issue with plastic sheeting sticking to the wet paint on the underside so i'm sanding and repainting it before it goes on. Looking to get a subtle front lip and skirt set too if i can find one cheap enough.

Battery will be relocated to the frunk, it worked so well on Tom's i'll give it a go myself. The up shot of that is that it leaves more room for the induction. Which is handy if you're wanting to fit chargecoolers and other such paraphernalia   s:wink:  s:wink:

Solid gear selector bushings on order too.

Whether i end up keeping the 2 or not i'm going to do all the work on it so it's perfect. Looks, handling and power i want just right.   s8) 8) s8)

That's mine!  (Hi Ollie)

It's a prototype for a new kit car I'm experimenting with.  It looks like a real one, but no panel is actually the same.  My bodyshop chap has done an amazing job.

If you're interested in the project, follow us on facebook (we've just started so there's not a lot on there yet!), or come to Stoneliegh Kit SHow (Nr Kenilworth/Birmingham) on Bank Holiday Sunday/Monday 8 & 9 May.
