is anyone aware of a difference between the mirrors on jdm crand a UK spec car? just tried ordering some form japan only to be told they wont fit?

They are identical! I have had one swapped before, if it was a dealer telling you this then they don't have a clue.
If you are ordering the JDM ones get the chrome jobbies from japanparts.

"No, those mirrors only fit Japanese domestic models, there is no application to your Unit whatsoever"

they will fit.

but in chrome they will spoil, an otherwise well modded motor. IMHO

I have seen chrome with Black, Red and BRG and it looked on all of them. A lot of MX5's have the chrome version mirrors.
