Well, after no end of problems, im finally picking up my 2 on sunday. Only problem, its not taxed.
I am insured on the car (the 2), but as the guy bought a new car (new megan convertable eurgh!) hes declared the 2 off the road. Now i WANT to tax it, but its sunday.
If i get pulled over on the way home from london (300+ miles) for some reason, anyone have any idea if the law will give me any a fine? Fair enough, the car ISNT taxed, but it will be taxed first thing monday, if the postoffice was open on sunday, ni'd tax it in london, but its not.
I'll have all my docs (insurance/v5/v11 etc) on me showing I jsut purchased it. Has anyone been stuck in this situation before.
Basically i've got no choice but to run the gauntlet, because sunday is the only day we can all (me, my dad and the seller) can all get off together, and hes obviosuly not insured on the 2 to tax it for me:(

As for the tax issue, I wouldn't worry, with all the docs on you I would be very surprised if they nicked you - Liz can probably give a definitive answer though.
I've never had a problem with it. The DVLA and the police are surprisingly leniant about such things, even taking into account their current "we'll look you up on our computer and fine you if you're not taxed" policy.

Yea thats what worried me, I heard that if you get nabbed with one of the Tax Cameras. the fine is auto generated, and you cant get around.... but someone told me they dont go on the motorways, and im littery going M25 - M4 - Home hehe, then i'll have to wait ALL NIGHT until monday morning to tax the 2 so I can drive it......arghhhhh!!!!
Hello Hello Hello.. s:) :) s:) the proper answer is that the law is black and white and that no car should be on the road without tax, however, as long as the tax is purchased on Monday by the time any police paperwork got to the DVLA they are going to see that the vehicle has been taxed. It would not in theirs and the publics interest to prosecute. Carry all your documentation and a receipt to say that you have just purchased it.
**DISCLAIMER** - this is not to say what would happen if you got pulled with no tax, I can't talk for any Mr Policemen who is having a bad day and fancies taking it out on you!

a couple of suggestions.
make sure you get 3 keys, 2 black and 1 grey
check the tyre pressures before driving off
take it easy if it's wet

I belive that there is a tax checker camera on the M20 just outside Folkestone, hidden under a bridge.

Yes, the dealer stuffed up... apparently the delivery driver took the V5 with him, rather than leaving it. They had it sent next day recorded, but that wouldn't get to me until Monday, and I was picking the car up on the Saturday.
Anyway, they offered me a loan car and to drive the taxed car down to me (100miles)... After much thought I took the risk.
Being naughty as I was I ignored the lack of tax and drove it many hundreds of miles that weekend, including back home.
The dealer hand delivered (ie. one of their mob drove down) the V5 and I taxed it first thing Monday.
No fines, no being caught. And FWIW I did have a valid tax disk displayed, it just happened to be for the car I'd traded in.

worse than having no tax at all...
A copper at the side of the road will let it go 99.9% of the time if you have just bought the car and are going to tax it at the first oppertunity. Put the tax disc from another car in though, and it looks very grim indeed. Its basically deception, and I dont know of anyone who's got away with it, as the police and the DVLA take a very-very dim view of it.
Better to have a "Del-Boy" style "TAX IN POST" sticker in the window...
I agree totally with that... however having asked my sis (who did a stint with the traffic police) how they spot out of date tax disks, she said they just sit and watch for a missing or wrongly coloured one.
So while you're right, if I did get pulled, i'd be in lots and lots of bother, my reason for doing it was that I would be less likely to get pulled in the first place.
Where are you picking it up from? I know several dealers selling 2's in Kent and London.
Is it a silver 2000 import? I have just had to order some parts on behalf of a couple of dealers.

I got pulled that way a few years ago. The bloke must have had hawk like eyes to see it though... He saw me, then turned around and followed me, so I pulled into a car park outside a post office, and got out with all the tax paperwork in my hand (it had been in my glovebox for months - I wasnt always an angel! s:twisted: :twisted: s:twisted: ) He then pulled up "to have a word".
Cap on, ticket book out, and with a very serious look on his face, he enquired if I knew the reason he had followed me... To which I obviously had no idea... He carefully explained that he was going to report me for having no tax, until I pointed to the forms in my hand, at which point he took the hint and buggered off...

But im thinking if I put that disk on and get pulled, i'd get in even more trouble for displaying the wrong disk on the wrong car, and trying to hide something from them, which I'm not, I just cant tax it because the post office is closed lol

Errrr, dont do this, you will get in the poo for sure, just go with no disc, you have a valid excuse, not your fault the post office doesn't open on a Sunday!!

Why can't the current owner tax it by declaring it back on the road and you pay him? Alternatively most Post Offices will tax vehicles up to 12.00 o'clock on a Saturday.

Because he bought a new car, he finished the insurance on the mr2, and he cant tax without valid insurance

It is possible for him to be the registered keeper, but for the insurance cover to be in your name. The 2 names wont match up but the registation numbers will and that is usually all the PO counter staff are interested in.

I had 2 cars for a while when I was selling my old one, and it didn't cost me too much to keep them both insured on a weekly renewal basis.

I beilve aslong as I have a certain combination of forms, its should be ok, I think its a V11 (New tax form), V5/3 (New Keepers Form) and insurance it will be ok. Some combination anyways, i'll just take them ALL to the PO hehe, let them do the work!

Just my 2p worth. If I were you I would merrily drive along with all the valid documents you have. Pass a tax camera and you could be in trouble, but I would expect there must be a way to contest it.
If Mr Plod pulls you over then I suppose it would depend on his mood. Get a bad one and may do you for no tax (but you would be able to contest this). Get a good one and I would expect him to just give you a producer.
All I can say is YAY! picked it up today. its great! got home no problems
