Title: OBD-II - USA, EU, others
Post by: Anonymous on January 20, 2010, 14:41
I have a Kiwi Wifi OBD-II interface from PLX Devices (http://www.plxkiwi.com/kiwiwifi/hardware.html), which I bought to read codes from my Mini Cooper and Toyota Prius.  Some of you may have heard of or used my software for the Power FC (Copilot).   I'm making great progress converting that into a different program which will retain as many features of Copilot as possible and will work with OBD-II.  My question is, and I don't know if anyone can answer or not, would a Kiwi Wifi work with European Toyotas as well?

ONly Jap imports are the ones which cause issues, US should be fine

He wants to know about Euro cars Russ  s;) ;) s;)

I can't see any issue with it not working at all, as I know of a few people using WiFi to connect to their OBDII data (using an iPhone on a 350Z admittedly, but the principle is the same).

US use certain wifi frequencies that aren't legal in teh EU

not sure if that matters here?

802.11a works in UK and US so the wifi stuff in the 5ghz band wont be a problem

802.11B and G use the same channels all over the world, but some countries don't allow the top 3.

So as long as you can change channels you should be fine - that's why it's in the ISO standards.

Geek mode - disengage

Thanks for the replies.

I'm just going to make it work with the Kiwi at first, then add support for other devices.  The Kiwi requires a TCP socket connection whereas other interfaces are USB or serial.

I have one that uses bluetooth as the wireless option.

By "TCP socket" I meant in the software sense.  Open a TCP socket to its IP address and port number and do socket reads/writes.  It is wifi (physically).
