Title: Is the alarm you use the BEST?
Post by: Anonymous on March 1, 2004, 19:18
Hi there i have a j-spec MR2 and like many oythers on this site am looking for an effective alarm/immobiliser that is thatcham cat 1 proof.

can anyone tell me witch alarm they have had sucess with, or where i can get an alarm company to come out and fit one? I have heard of a company that you pay £10 per month and they come out ot fit it for you, if your car is stolen you get all your money back? anyone else know about this?

Thanks for any help!
Rob

Hi When mine came in from Belgium I got a Sigma Alarm fitted, slotted stright into the UK Key Fob (Not sure if you have the same).

It works great, Microwave sensor, etc, etc.

Paid £500 to Motorpoint for fitting, etc, etc which seemed to be the going rate.

Hope this Helps.

BTW: this was in 2000, so things might have changed.

I have found the LazerLine do the best CAT1 alarms i have fitted far to many to mention and only have problems with them unfortunaly when i have done somthing wrong LOL   s:wink:  s:wink:   (which is not that offtern)

Best to get it fited by a  non mobile installer as a shop carries mroe tools and will i think will do a more profesional install

I think the standard rate for supply and fit is about £400+ for a Thatcham cat-1 alarm and immob...that's what I paid back in 2000 for mine.

As mentioned in another topic somewhere, I've got the Clifford Concept 300.. and to be honest it's given me a few problems over the last 3 years, and I'd never consider getting another one!

I'm sure other people will have had more promising experiences with theirs though!

Tim.

Yeah, it's not just the fact that I've had 2 alarm units fail now, and umpteen false alarms before they realised that water was triggering the bonnet/boot sensors - it's the little things, like the key fob..
The white lettering on black rubber buttons wore off after about 6 months in my pocket, and the keyring hoop has also nearly worn through - I had to switch to the spare fob for fear of it breaking and falling off!

Just not very pleased with it... still have no idea how much it'll cost for a new alarm unit outside the manufacturers warranty either - nobody try to steal my car at the moment, ok!   s:roll:  s:roll:

be warned tho if you go to a install company that only fit say COBRA then they will put you off teh idea that Lazerline are the best as they dont want to fit it as they have no experince with them and also the lazerline modles all include dumy looms and loads of spliceing! so it takes mroe time so less money they make!

So if you can perswade them to fit lazerline then good, if not try somwherer else!

We used to charge around £650 to supply and fitt the lazerline CAT 1 top of the range and for £100 extra you can get the blipper to page you if the alarms gone off and the proximety sensors with tell people to stand back if there to close

i have spoken to my local fitter (the only one approved in Dundee), he has recommended a Scorpion alarm quoted at £450. In his experience they have the least number of problems, he will provide a 1 year guarentee too and so only installs alarms that arn't going to come back with problems.

He says Cliffords are problematic and Laserline have a poor company backup (keep being bought out?) and are good alarms but not well supported.

I hope this help anyone else looking for an alarm  s:wink:  s:wink:

Its an old thread I know, but its about time I addressed this security thing....

Does the information above still apply, or anyone have more recent experience about the decent alarm/immob packages around?

My Insurers don't require Thatcham-approved  s:shock:  s:shock:  and won't offer me any discount if I get it, but I 'spose thats what I should be looking for? DIY or fitted, I don't really mind.

Any help muchly welcomed,

Ste

Hey Spit, I was in the market for a new alarm a month or so ago. my g/friend lives in a dodgy area, so I wanted piece of mind. So I opted for this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-PAGEGUARD-True-Color-2-Way-Multi-Function-Car-Alarm_W0QQitemZ8020889436QQcategoryZ75329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

There are loads of cheaper ones like this, but this has a nice colour screen. I've had no problems with it so far, apart from when a car with a really loud exhaust comes barrelling it the road at 2am, the pager wakes me up and I come running down the stairs this a shotgun. (you can also buy Micro wave sensors for this £15 and you can leave you top down in the summer while you shop.) This thing really does work from over a mile away.

If you looking for cat approved alarms try the Best Viper: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VIPER-791XV-CAR-ALARM-2-DAY-SHIP-NEW-NOT-REFURBISHED_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33721QQitemZ8022889536QQrdZ1

You can get these types of alarms fitted by an auto electrician for about £60.

I have the standard alarm which in my opinion does a good job, Thatcham etc., but obviously without all the fancy bits and pieces.

Is it possible to put one of these things "on top" of the standard, or will they conflict. Are they only really for new applications?

No.... I wasn't suggesting putting in the stock.

I was asking could I get the bells and whistles for £99 AND leave the stock in place, or would I have to take the stock out and lose the Thatcham rating.

Oh, sorry roger, (can't read good)

I'm not too sure don't think you could, you would need the new alarm fitted, then ad you stock bits to it. for example my car is EU so it has the Cat 1 emobaliser, which works with the alarm, but means that the remote engine start doesnt work on this unit, because it can overide it. i'm sure you could use the stock shock sensors aswell.

Pretty sure you'd have to get the stock alarm removed Roger.

Technically I think you'd still have a Cat2 immobiliser, since that's in the ECU rather than the alarm brain (someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure  s:) :) s:) )

When my sister's MR2 sigma alarm when a bit iffy, we had hell and all trouble getting anyone to look at it.  I believe sigma is no longer in business or have been taken over... even the internet didn't help!  s:cry:  s:cry:

Do any members rate the factory fitted alarm?

I have a 2005 model

Mine does not seem very sensitive, certainly don't want false alarms but with the top down need to do some vicarious hand gestures in the cabin to set the alarm off - no crude comments please!!!
The siren is not that loud either

the sensitivity can be adjusted and the siren relocated to make it louder. if you do a search on alarm you should be able to find the relevant data matey.
Heres one to start you off that may help:

If you do a search for "alarm and sensitivity" you will get this....

http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4995&highlight=alarm+sensitivity

FWIW, I have turned mine up to full sensitivity and have had no adverse effects. With the top down, reaching for the ignition or center cubby hole will set it off. With the top up, If I start to wash the roof without disarming first the alarm goes off....do it every blooming week.  s:roll:  s:roll:

As for the alarm being quiet, the only way to make it louder is to remove the spare wheel or re-site the siren.....
