Title: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Anonymous on February 15, 2010, 16:07
It would be lovely to know if anyone's had this problem or knows what one earth it could be! If I don't get this fixed I am going to lose my mind!

Every time I put my foot down on the accelerator my car makes an extremely annoying high pitch whistle sound, it doesn't continue if I keep my foot down it only makes the noise at first.

It isn't clear exactly where in the engine the noise is coming from and I've had opinions off three different mechanics, one from a Toyota dealer itself. They all assumed this whistle sound was a result of an air leek and a problem with the inlet manifold gasket. After having my engine taken apart and the inlet manifold gasket system changed, it's now clear that this whistle cannot be an air leak! Now each mechanic appears clueless!

The car performance is only slightly affected and not entirely noticeable, when the car whistles it seems to have a tiny flat spot. The engine light isn't on so It can't be causing any damage to the car, only me and my head!

Is the car completely standard, or has an aftermarket filter been added etc?
Might help to narrow down where the whistle is coming from

Thanks for replying so quick!

It's completely standard! I bought it in august it's a w reg. The person before me said it had been making the whistle noise since he had it in 04, i've even had someone say it sounds like the cambelt is slipping but it's not and nothing to do with that.

I personally think it sounds more high pitch when it's been raining.

It could be the accesory drivebelt slipping, this will get worse if it's wet. Inlet manifold noises (downstream of the throttle body) are generally worse when the engine is idling as the vacuum is stronger and will disappear if you accelerate (vaccuum is less). Upstream of the throttle body there isn't enough pressure difference to make it whistle. I'd ask someone to look at the accessory belt tension - if it's been slipping since 2004 it will be pretty worn by now

Hasn't got a cam belt its got a timing chain so no worries there.
Auxilliary belt (fan belt); an easy check just to eliminate.

what is an accessory belt? Sounds like something from Primark

lol!!! primark!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to both of u!

Ahhh I think I have heard someone mention the accessory drivebelt before,

Sorry i'm going to sound like a real girl now,  is that under the car? Like when you put your foot down it pushes some thing under the car to the engine, something to do with it's power? oh I don't even know how to explain ?

As you look in the engine bay, it's a belt round some pulleys visible low on the right hand side.
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Anonymous on February 15, 2010, 17:02
Thanks!

Do you think as well this could be the culprit of the whistle?!
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: StuM on February 15, 2010, 17:06
I would normally describe a slipping belt fan as a 'screech' noise, rather than a whistle.  Does it do it all of the time, or is it intermittent?

There might be a member local to you that could have a listen.

How hot are you? Could be builders etc perhaps?

Sounds like it could be the belt, this may happen if the tensioner is on it's way out or a bearing is seizing up.

Does the sound seem like it's coming from your right side when you are driving the car.

Where are you based.
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: cclarke99 on February 15, 2010, 19:40
Sorry I was in a bit of a hurry replying and didn't explain it properly. It's a drive belt that connects the engine to the alternator, air conditioning pump and water pump. If the belt is loose and the engine speeds up it can't pull the other bits round fast enough and the belt slips, which makes the sound. StuM is right, it's more of a screech than a whistle. It's worse when it's wet, obviously and also often first thing when you start, as it's cold and doesn't grip so well, also because the alternator is working harder to charge the battery. Any garage should be able to look at it and tell you if it's the problem.

Post by: Anonymous on February 17, 2010, 12:24
Thanks peop!

It's deff worse when wet and I'm not sure about when engine first starts i'll have to listen more... It doesn't happen when the car's over 60mph?

It's a screechy whistle, not like builders lol!!! Maybe more of a screech if you compare to an actually swiss swoooo. Hard to describe! It's deff more of a screech when wet.

Each time I put my foot down and make the car speed up it makes it.

I can't really figure out what side it's coming from, if i have a passenger they'll say it's behind them which would be left but when I have my window open or roof down i think it's behind me!!! It's just loud!

Is it quite rare because it didn't pop to any of the mechanics minds when listening?

I'm in Bristol.

it does sound like the belt is slipping, but I'd have thought a mechanic would have picked it up straight away. I assume they've gone out in the car and heard it?
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Anonymous on February 17, 2010, 12:33
Oh yes!!

Two have raced it around to get the ear full, their heart was set on it being an air leek though.

Can this happen to all cars?

One mechanic used to work for peugeot and said he's never heard anything like it and the other deals with all sorts except bmw''s. I even asked a toyota mechanic and he was like inlet manifold gasket for sure bla bla bla

I just spoke to one of the mechanics again he doesn't live far and he's determined it's still and air noise just doesn't know what!

If changed the lovely screechy whistle to a horn I think i'd cause a lot of accidents !

Including my own !

That was indeed terrifying.

lol they would be pretty stupid not to wouldn't they. I have an excuse for not knowing i'm female and i wasn't told it was!

I'm in bristol.

Both the mechanics i know look at my car for me on the side so they make their own money and I get it done cheaper,

so they look after work or on weekend and they're both saying they'll have to take the engine apart again which'll mean i'll be without it for like a week!

Well I gotta get around

they couldn't figure it out first time so i'm in two minds whether it's even worth it! That's my last option.

I'd rather someone be able to identify so i can plan what to do!

A week to change the inlet manifold gasket is a tad unrealistic. 6 hours, maybe 8 if you haven't done it on a 2 before?   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:
Get it done then you will know for sure whether or not that is / was the problem. Just make sure they check the drive belt (fan belt) first.

I already had it done  s:( :( s:(

That's the prob it isn't that so they wanna take it allllll apart to see.

Its an outside possibility but if the chain tensioner has been messed with and extended to far so that the timing chain is too tight it will make a zzzzzzzzzzzzzerr  zzzzzzzzerr type noise a bit like a turbo.
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Anonymous on February 17, 2010, 17:57
This noise is like turbo gone wrong.

I wish I could record the sound and put it on here so you could hear

This is my best description, imagine you put your foot down:

SWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

under the whistle you can hear the nice sound of the engine.

And when it's wet it's more high pitch.

It doesn't sound like those silly fake turbo whistles it's more screechy.

The guy who had the car before said it's made the noise it since he bought it.

Post by: Anonymous on February 17, 2010, 18:01
Has'nt got one of those stupid turbo whistle things in the exhaust?

Plus why did you buy it with an unidentified whistle?
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Chris_h on February 17, 2010, 18:06
does it do it throughout the revrange?

And based on doing it more when wet does point to some kind of ancilliary belt slippage.

My S2k makes a strange whistling noise at 2-40000 revs, but this seems to be the monster carbon intake system playing like an instrument through this revrange.

my money would be on intake or ancilliary belt or their pulley bearings
Title: Re: HELP! WHISTLE SOUND WHEN ACCELERATE!
Post by: Anonymous on February 17, 2010, 18:08
lol that's a good question.

Because I went there with a mechanic from the area (got it from bournemouth) and they said it sounds like the cambelt or somin else beginin with c which would be max 200 to fix, and being a female i trusted the mechanic! To then find it doesn't even have a cambelt.

Nah i've had a new exhaust.

And everything else was spot on it doesn't look nearly 10 years old looks like 3, picked it up for a decent price.

Yes it doesn't do it when above 4. Did it do that each time u accelerated?

Sounds like idler bearing worn, as mentioned...but could also be water pump bearing on the way out..?

Alternators can also make screeching noises when worn.....

Does it do it if the car is standing, or is it only when youre moving?

If its only when you're moving, it could be the gearbox.......

Does it do it whatever gear you're in........does it go away when you rev in neutral...?

So many questions.......!   s:D :D s:D

So many questions lol ask away I should arrange a toyota roadster owner meeting for this one!

It's whenever I put my foot down, whenever it's trying to speed up, if I have it in 4th gear at 35 or 5th gear at 40 it'll screechy whistle like a b*tch.

To clarify......it does it whenever the engine is revved (stationary/ neutral).......or only when the engine is under load, and the car is moving...?

I'm wondering if it could be a stuck PCV or even the Carbon cannister.
I can definitely hear mine sucking through the cannister on take off, causes a rattle in the cannister itself at times.

Made me giggle lol!!

You sure your car isnt supercharged  s:) :) s:)

But more seriously, it could be a loose bearing (but thats generally more of a wurring sound).

Have you had the car pressure tested for air leaks, water leaks, etc ? Not sure if this would help...
Im not sure how much its going to cost to have belts replaced, but im sure its worth replacing if not expensive?

Can you run a car without certain belts? I know you can run without auxilary (correct me if im wrong), but the alternator, etc wont charge, power steering wont work... but might help diagnose where the issue lies.

(im not a mechanic, but just trying to think of issues from my previous cars)

You can run them for a short period, but remember your water pump is also driven by this belt and it will overheat after a period of time.

Power steering is an electric pump at the front on the car   s:wink:  s:wink:

Maybe worth removing the aux belt, give it a rev ... listen to see if the whistle is still there then?
My mate has a supercharger sound coming from his car yesterday, due to a loose belt... Might be an idea to check tension on all belts?
