Title: 16" wheels?
Post by: Anonymous on March 4, 2004, 13:51
...I've searched but can't find what i'm looking for and also posted on SC.

 Are 7.0 X 16" ok on the MR2?

With 205 on the front and 225 rear?

Also does anyone know the weight of the stock wheels?

Shouldn't be a problem - AFAIK 16" all round is what TRD recommend for use with the Sportivio set up, which is also a bit lower than stock. 7" isn't that wide either, many people have put 17s on without too much hassle and I bet most them are wider than 7".

I'm thinking of changing my MR2 to a newer one and installing the Sportivo which is why I wanted to check.

I can get better, lighter and cheaper 16" than the TRD wheels.

Sanity check: the Sportivo isn't really suitable/necessary for an '03 - only need anti-roll bars and springs as the shocks have already been uprated.

Ah sorry no I was a little misleading, I've found a silver '02 with 10k on the clock with sat nav so I was thinking about changing.

How does your turbo do with 15"?  Ever feel like you'd like a little more traction?

I'm currently on A539s which have very little traction in the scheme of things. If I wanted more, I'd simply switch to Yoko Advan Neovas (even though that'd mean 195/50 all round!) or if I wanted insane amounts of traction, I'd have A048s.

Remember, what you loose in traction, you (normally) gain in progressiveness.

TRD recommends this with Sportivo:
Recommended Tires:16-inch high-grip (Size: front 205/45R16, rear 215/45R16)
Recommended Wheels:1-piece aluminum alloy wheels (Size:16×7.0J Off Set + 45mm)

The stock wheels (pre facelift) are 14.6 and 15.2lbs.

The wheels i'm looking at are 13lbs.

What do you think?  To heavy?  When I put tires on it might add up, I don't wanna kill my acceleration

At 13lbs a piece they sound OK to me.. try my Mille Miglia wheels afterwards and see if you made the right decision!  s:lol:  s:lol:

Compared to about 15lbs stocks...they are about 15% lighter. But you are moving the heaviest part of the wheel 1/2" further from the centre. I'd say it's pretty even with the stocks in the end...

How about Racing Hart CP-035R...? They would be only 10.8lbs in 16x7" and are still less than the TRD wheels  s;) ;) s;)

Wake up Ben!  s:wink:  s:wink:

I use a guy at KN Wheels (http://www.knwheels.com) who refinish all types of wheel by acid stripping to bare metal, repairing any damage with aluminium, shot blasting then paint / laquer / bake.
The results are fantastic, I'm sure you saw my wheels at last years JAE...

Did the paint last ok?

what about:

Front: 195/40/16
Rear:  215/40/16

or

195/45/16
205/45/16 or 215/45/16

would the lower profile make that much difference?

Yep, the 17's have been done almost a year now and the finish is as good as the day they were done, even with all the salt and acid wheel cleaner I have used!

Will the standard 2003, 16 inch alloys off the rear, fit on the front??
Just a thought, be an easy way of having 16 all round..

I have a 2003, and I have mounted konis, tte springs, tte stabi set and the complete Lampka brace/stabi set, and I can truly say that I feel a huge improvement on handling.

Have you looked at gunmetal OZ SuperLeggra's, i dunno how much they weigh but they ARE meant to be some of the lightest wheels available and OZ make GREAT wheels, they also make them in 42mm Offset as of about 6 months ago  s:D :D s:D

Only thing is you're looking at a 7" width whether you go for 15, 16 or 17" according to their site.

According to my vernier's, and the spare wheel sitting under my bench, and the centre bore adapter for my 17"s, 54mm...

s:?: :?: s:?:  Whilst on the subject or wheels &  tyres does anyone know if you can safely fit a 205 tyre onto a 6" wide rim? I know (thanks to Phil4!) that the pre-03 model which has 205 rears uses a 6.5" rim.

Depends from the tyres...check the manufacturers website.

I have 205/50/15 and 225/50/15 S03's on the stock 6/6.5" wheels. According to Bridgestone, that's just fine...but those tyres do have pretty stiff sidewalls, which probably helps on that.

had it done by accident when my dealer cocked up.

makes life interesting and I had to run way over pressure to stabilise the sidewalls.

I'd only do it with something like S03's which have a very stiff sidewall. Though it's still not ideal.
Title: More wheel questions!!!
Post by: Anonymous on April 30, 2004, 14:32
Still on the subject of wheel sizes etc, can anyone tell me if a 7x16 rim will be ok front and rear on a pre-03 car that is lowered with TTE springs?   s:?: :?: s:?:
Title: Superleggeras
Post by: Anonymous on April 30, 2004, 19:44
If anyone wants to see Superleggeras used to good effect, check out Kabinski's steed on spyderchat:

http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12079

His are 17x7. 15.2lbs each. A little bit heavier than I would prefer personally but IIRC the 16"s seem to be disproportionately lighter than the 17"s. At the end of the day the trade off is looks vs performance - just depends on which way you lean.

Steve,

Those sizes should be fine since it is what TRD recommend with the Sportivio set up, which itself lowers the car.
Title:
Post by: markiii on May 1, 2004, 09:20
the 16x7 bit should be but don't forget teh offset issues. Alos teh sportivo lowers by 20mm, the TTE by 30mm

I think Seans Mille Miglia 17" were 38mm, in which case no it won't.

I have the 16" superleggera in silver with 205/45 front and 225/40 back.
Check them out at  w www.alessandrocasero.com (http://www.alessandrocasero.com) w .

Be warned, the size is just perfect, handling gets a little "heavier" but you have more grip. I guess you lose a little acceleration (supposed) and I felt like loosing a little bit of top speed.

BIG problem: you will find very little choice of tyres. And they are expensive too. That really s%&£$.

That's a nice looking car Alex.. You're not wrong about Oz being expensive though - a friend had 18" Super's on his car (not a 2, don't worry  s:) :) s:) ) and they cost an arm and a leg..

BTW - slight drift - have you got any close-up-ish pics of that stubby aerial fitted to the car?  s:) :) s:)

No...I don't have a closer pic...but i can teel you all about it. The easy part is bying it on ebay. To mount it...well you need to be ready to get your hands dirty, meaning it's not a clean job on the inside but it looks just perfect on the outside.
