Hello everybody. I'm looking to buy a new car pretty soon and had a shortlist of three:- MR2, Civic Type-R and Clio 182. I've tried to look at them in terms of performance, practicality, cost to run, merde french build quality etc. Firstly I decided to get a few insurance quotes. Adrian Flux asked if I was a member of any organisations so I joined this one (I got quoted £475 for 4 years NCB, fully comp, no claims protection with my GF as a named driver). Anyway, I'll get to the point eventually, I also joined the Civic club. The difference between the two forums is massive. Everybody here has been extremely helpful and welcoming, I've had quick replies to any topics I posted and you all seem to know the 2 inside out. The site is well laid out and everything works (no bad gateway/proxy mumbo jumbo). I tried to join in a debate about air-con on the civic forum, pro's and cons type stuff. I asked if the system needed servicing/regassing regularly as one of the cons. The moderator's response was "nope". It was an answer but a reason would have been nice or a welcome to the club fella. To be fair, he did explain once somebody else queried it. So people, what I'm trying to say is that you are all a thoroughly bloody nice bunch of chaps and should be congratulated for a great forum.

Go for the '2.
If anyone on the Civic forum trys to tell you the stock Type R is faster (which they always do) i'll prove them wrong. It only gets away from you a high speeds due to higher BHP. Get your launch right in a MR2 and you'll kill it due to it being rear wheel drive and very light, it also helps having the engine over the rear, it keeps the wheels down.
I won't go into handling, because we win at that as well. s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

Just changed to Adrian Flux for my insurance, but they never asked about membership of organisations etc. Did this give a discount do you know s:?: :?: s:?: Cheers

I've got a Civic Type R matey and i am a member of the CTR forum and i am not unfriendly. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience on there but generally i have found most members to be friendly as indeed they are on here. Regarding your query on air/con,as far as i know it is checked over as part of routine servicing. I would rather have a/c than not have it but just switch it off when i rag the car.

Is the engine in your Type R a detunned S2000 engine? How easy is it to up the power?
I heard one go past me this monring, I could hear the cam change hehe s:) :) s:)
Nah I think the S2000 engine is longtitudinally mounted, the civics is transverse if i remember rightly..I think the Civic has I-VTEC(intelligent) where as the S2000 doesn't..thought they may have changed this with the later models
03 onwards has I-VTEC as well.

As in it's not really all that intelligent, it just stops it doing daft things like chaning cam profiles when you're not accelerating hard at all (little pedal pressure).
i beleive the I is for intake valves, VTEc normally only varies teh outlet valves. At least accoridng to honda at the 02 motorshow.
Hmm i've heard different..that the I as in VVTI stands for intelligent..not sure the technology does the same though.. a quick internet search revealed the following...
"The Honda i-VTEC as distinct from the earlier VTEC engine gives us much smoother power delivery with the i-VTEC system varying the duration of the intake cam by as much as 50 degrees continually, throughout the entire rev range, to produce a much smoother, controlled power delivery, as well as making substantially greater low and midrange RPM torque than the old VTEC system. i-VTEC is the cutting edge of engine technology today. "
SO i preseume it is for intelligent operation of the inlet cam, not sure like Mark said though whether the inlet cam was adjustable before?
Summary:- Definitely has something to do with the inlet cam! s:lol: :lol: s:lol: maybe the Honda pro's will be along shortly..

The civic engine is different to the one in the S2000. My car is a standard Type R and i believe upping the power significantly costs mega bucks. There is a guy on the CTR forum who goes under the title Stanwan who i believe has spent several thousand pounds on his,also there are one or two guys who use nos. Standard CTR's do seem to get faster as the mileage goes up. I recently test drove the 04 facelifted model and i would say it felt significantly slower than my 02 model with 17 thousand miles on the clock.

Not on the s2000, its the F20C VTEC unit from '99 to 04 only used in the s2000, Except the US market which uses a new 2.2 unit with 8k limit

I was exactly the same, I used to post on SC, and it was terrible there, I got pointed here, and its the best thing thats ever happened, the guys here are friendly and helpful, plus they've sorted me out with new bits for my 2! its a great forum!

I might go for the Civic type R if i had the choice. the 2 is not very practical. great as a getaway car, but as a workhorse s:oops: :oops: s:oops:
What you lose in practicality you gain in other areas like rear wheel drive status (a BIG plus), 50/50 balance, toplessness s8) 8) s8) , and the 2 is more exotic, mine really turns heads with a bodykit and LOUD Top Secret exhaust s:wink: :wink: s:wink:
the 0-60 time for the MR2 is about 7.5, some good tyres and minor mods will see this drop to the low sevens (EVO magazine quote 7.2) and I know the civic will win a drag race but thats not what its about really, it also suffers from torque steer and needs the extra bhp to propel its MPV body throught the atmosphere.
as far as the Clio goes, it think its the ugly duckling (i actually like the civics MPV shape!), i mean the Clio V6 is mean but the 182 is well... nice? s:roll: :roll: s:roll:
if you can save up to buy a VX220 turbo, and Honda S2000 or a Clio V6 and get back to me s:wink: :wink: s:wink: now THESE are CARS!!!
