Title: Fitting King Cobra HU in MR2, need speaker suggestions....
Post by: vatovey on March 19, 2010, 10:49
Morning all,

I have ordered a King Cobra double din stereo (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/King-Cobra-7-2-Din-HD-DVD-Player-WiFi-GPS-PC-Win-CE_W0QQitemZ250591770900QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP?hash=item3a586ef914) for my MR2, at present I have stock speakers installed, so I am thinking of upgrading to something better.

The audio output of the King Cobra stereo is 45W x 4.

Do you have any recommendations as to what speakers would be worth pairing up with the above HU, I don't want to install an AMP, and I only want to spend up to a maximum of £80, I know I'm asking alot... but I thought someone may know of some excellent (but cheap) component speakers.

I hear the Focal units are excellent, what are the lower range Focal units like ?, or is it worth spending a little more ?

I went for Infinity Kappa Cross overs, reasonably priced and did the job well. Far better than stock.

It depends on your budget but if you do a seach then theres plenty of other threads about this topic

I've got Vibe SEK - 60's. Very good sound quality and very loud when you want them.

Thanks for the comments; although this has been discussed before, it's always handy to have an update with currently available speakers etc. Are you guys using stock wiring, or did you take the opportunity to replace and/or add an amp?

My fronts are amp'ed using wiring ever so slightly thicker than the original stuff.

Would any of these be suitable for a MR2 ?

Looks like most of the speakers in the link above - the tweeter doesn't look the right shape.

Do confirm elsewhere (because as you know, I am in the same boat as you), but it looks as though some of these don't come with tweeters. I think you may be confusing the picture of the crossovers with the tweeters in terms of shape. This one looks the right thing to me, but as I say, do confirm with someone more knowledgeable than myself before you buy:

That Infinity Kappa looks quite a bit different from mine, bought 3-4 years ago, but with that one I did have to modify the OEM holes door car slightly to get them in. They came with a silver half dome cover as one of the fitting options, which look quite good IMHO.
