Title: Headlight Lens - Pitting
Post by: Anonymous on March 15, 2004, 14:37
Noticed when cleaning my '2 at the weekend that the RHS plastic lens is lightly pitted on the outside over approximately one third of it's area from the bottom-up, if you see what I mean.

The LHS is perfect, and I am always really careful to lightly clean these with car shampoo or similar as used on the rest of the body, anything solvent-based has been nowhere near this area, but that is how it appears. Can only think that the plastic itself has deteriorated.

Took some photos but they don't really help, as you can imagine.

Anyone else had a problem like this? And how do you think I would fare with a warranty claim?

Could it just be lots of small stone chips from oncoming traffic on the off-side?

The plastic on the lenses seems to be pretty soft.. the whole front of my car is completely stone-chipped, and the lights have probably come off worse! I'm thinking of trying to polish the pitting out with some wet and dry paper when the front has been sprayed...

Just a thought,
Tim

Thanks for the reply Tim, but I am certain that the pitting is not from impact, as the affected area is uniformly affected, and have very few stonechips anywhere (<8000 miles, and on IOW)

I was in our other car last week and got unavoidably and uniformly salt blasted by a gritter. I was grateful I wasn't in the 2. Maybe your headlamp went through a cloud of similar? Not necessarily from a gritter but maybe even from cr*p kicked up by oncoming traffic on the other side of the road? The roads are probably at their peak annual "filfth state" right now.

I go no distance before getting a mucky coat these days   s:? :? s:?  and not all of the stuff rising from the ground is small stuff - I've acquired several chips recently.
